Sean McVay knows he screwed up in the Super Bowl — and his Rams will be stronger for it

All of which delivered McVay to his immediate regrets. Well, only one regret, really: the realization that when you face New England and Belichick in the Super Bowl, you don’t ask what will be on that test. Instead, you just read every last vowel in the available material. You create answers for the unlikeliest of questions. You plan for all contingencies. Because that’s exactly what Belichick counts on you not doing. That’s why he is who he is. And that’s why the Patriots have become the gold standard in Super Bowl history.

When you don’t put in that kind of work (and the Rams didn’t), you lose a Super Bowl 13-3 with one of the worst offensive performances of your career. Then you face visitors coming to your training camp with a familiar question …

When did you realize the mistakes you made preparing for the Patriots?

“During the game,” McVay said. “Right in the middle of it.”

And the lesson?

“If you expect to adapt and evolve, [remember] the teams that did have success against you,” McVay said. “Because you bet your ass you’re going to see that game plan again.”

“Because you bet your ass you’re going to see that game plan again.”

Yeah, but how many teams can carry out a game plan that calls for holding you by the nose while they kick you in the ass?

Seems like hes been lamenting over his lack of preparedness and being out-coached since February. I applaud his honesty, humility and willingness to admit mistakes but for God's Sake move on.

Apparently he didn't learn the lesson Belichick gives on how to handle such questions:

"We're not here to discuss 2018, 2017, 2016... we're here focused on the 2019 season."

I smell a Super Bowl hangover for LA still thinking about last year (can it be called a "Super Bowl Hangover" for the losing team or do you have to win the Super Bowl to have a "Super Bowl Hangover"..?)

I think the best plan against the Pats for that particular Rams team should have been scorched earth attack, attack, attack offense. (I know kind of obvious, clueless opinion. "score a lot")

The fact is either their D was awesome or we were off big time offensively. Two TDs for that Rams team? Because of what the Rams D did, that was the Rams Super Bowl to lose.

PS. Flip side. Pats D only gave 3 points... That is a darn good Super Bowl formula for victory right there

Goff really messed up too. No NFL starting QB should take the sacks he took. Failed to throw it away a number of times.

You a Patton fan, eh?

Sadly my familiarity with the phrase predates the movie. However it does not (thankfully) date back to Patton's real life 3rd Army speech. Even I'm not that old

While McVay was outcoached I think this story is being over played. In the end the Rams offense just didn't play well. Particularly Goff who had an awful game.

I think a lot of McVay doing this is trying to take the heat off his young QB.

I think it's fair to say Goff's head was scrambled by BB significantly more than McVay's.

McVay is the NFL version of a helicopter parent.

Oh.. too bad. I've always admired him even if only for the reason that he was the only general the Germans were afraid of. He was never where they thought he would be. Monty.. on the other hand...

You missed this part:

It should be noted, McVay isn’t downtrodden when he says things like this. Instead, he comes off more like someone who is simultaneously upset with himself and itching to show that he won’t make the same mistake twice.

It's "too bad" I'm not in my 90's???

No I got it. Hes not down in the dumps . He just can't let it go and move on,

Don't quite see it that way. He was asked a question and he answered truthfully. You have to look past how the media always frame things into clickbait content.

Too bad that you only speak of that phrase, not of the man behind the phrase, like most people do.

And speaking of being in your 90's.. now that wouldn't be a bad thing would it? It meant you lived a good, long life. ;)

Those are the biggest hangovers of all. The Seahawks weren't the same after Malcolm Butler. The Falcons weren't the the same after 28-3. And frankly, the Patriots weren't the same after 16-1.

Thats the issue. Hes answering it truthfully.

You mean 18-1, right?

If TB12 is healthy they go 13-3.
