What to Watch For At Pats Training Camp/July 25 Training Camp Day 1 Thread

No question.

In HOU, TN, DET, MIA and to a lesser extent TB (Licht) all desire players who know the NEP system.

I would suspect he'll want to route players to the NFC

This post bring up an interesting question. I wonder how much Vrabel and BOB and Quinn and Robinson really know about the system now because it’s been awhile since they were Pats. I think the Pats’ sources and methods continually evolve and that’s one reason Houston is pining for Caserio. He’s up to date. That’s my theory anyway.

I wouldn’t want to see Jonathan Jones traded. He’s here on a cheap (ish) one year tender and you can never have enough good DBs.

Just as importantly, what would they be able to get for him? What’s a guy like JJ hauling in terms of draft comp, lately? A 6th rounder? Maybe a 5th?
Comp pick ? 5th maybe. I think he is more valuable than that and I bet DET agrees

The system evolves but scheme it's pretty much the same. Plus its the caliber of player they bring in and their abilities. Knowing the system is major plus but not critical just quicker time-to-value if you will.

If someone offers a 3rd you have to think about it if Jones is not your starter anymore. As long he is your starter I don't see any reason for a trade though. You can still get a comp pick when he walks in FA and you lose a valuable member of your DB group knowing that only elite DB groups win Super Bowls in this day and age.

You might be right. I would be a bit surprised, myself. I just don’t see any reason to get rid of our best slot CB for a late round pick, especially with Duke Dawson being such an unknown, that’s all.

It can be argued that they’d get a higher round comp pick for him with another season under his belt and a decent contract, vs trading him for what they’d get now.

And, of course, we’d be able to have him as a Patriot for all of 2019 to boot.

Agree. JJ should only be moved if 2-3 other DBs show they have what it takes to play that role very well. If not then it's stupid to trade him.

Exactly. Do we think JJ gets Logan Ryan money on the open market? If so he was a 4th. If so, keep him. Why mess with a good thing.

If some idiot is offering a 3rd......

I don’t like the idea of trading Jones at all. He’s their starting slot CB, and he can help take away some of the best receivers in football.

But maybe BB thinks he is more valuable than “whatever he can get on the market”. He has been very very good at what he does in both the year preceding and after his injury. I hope he sticks. If we lose him after the season - no worries about the compensation.

Nah. It completely blindsided everyone (I was the only one let go). I really hated the job and wanted an out though so now I get to collect unemployment instead of quitting.

Best of luck man! I feel in a similar way kind of, in that I don't love my job, so if I got laid off it would feel weird. The prideful part of me would be pissed and sad, because no one likes hearing (from anyone) that they're not wanted anymore. But at the same time, the amount of things that would suddenly stop being on my mind 24/7 would be staggering. Hope you land on your feet in a better place!

I think it all depends on how a player like Dawson or Williams pans out. Williams probably is suited for the slot, but if he locks down an outside role opposite Gilmore, maybe Jackson bumps inside? I think Jones is the default slot guy to start camp, but if the young guys step up (or we get another surprise UDFA contributor), I could see him being the odd man out. Either way, it's nice to know that barring injury we have a lot of options at CB.

I'm not sure of the landscape, but maybe they would look for a player in exchange for J. Jones. Like a WR or TE?

What team is loaded at WR depth or has a player on the last year of restricted FA contract?

Could be for a player as well. Just gotta see where the team is late Aug

Or OT?? DE?

If it's a TE sooner the better so he'll have more time to get cozy with Tom and the offense

We need Jones for the Tyreek Hills of the world hold on to him and maybe even extend him.
I don't care where Dawson was drafted if Jones is a much better player.
Any word how Crossen looks in his year 2 leap?

I agree no need to move Jones. Let’s not weaken the supposed strength of this defense for future picks. If we lose Jones in free agency down the line he’s more than likely gonna net us a comp pick anyway.

Slot Corners are getting a lot of money nowadays... I think J. Jones will be out of our reach
