Could the Patriots Win a SB With Hoyer as the Starting QB?

Lol, a made up stat. It's his actual coaching record without Brady.

He had 4 losing seasons in Cleveland out of 5, a 5-11 season in New England and he was 0-2 when Bledsoe went down. That was his head coaching resume before Brady took over. I guess a sample size of 6+years isn't enough.

The 2007 Pats had a point differential of 315, scored an average of 36.8 points per game and went 18-1.

The 2008 Pats had a point differential of 101, score an average of 25.6 points per game, went 11-5 and missed the playoffs.

Let's keep pretending a 11-5 with that roster and Cassel was some miraculous coaching job. Todd Halley got a 10-6, Pro Bowl season out of Cassel two years later.

But let's say Hoyer was the starting QB for the entire 2019 season. What do you think the team's final record be? Is it possible BB wins it all with Hoyer as the starter?

Hoyer would never start a whole season imo. If 08 repeated itself it’s hard to see Brady sit out a year to recover and then return to football. Pats would correctly understand they would need to find someone right away better than Hoyer to take the reins in the short term- not sure if JS is the guy that can do that yet. Cassel worked partly because the schedule was very favorable for that to happen. He was also a better QB at the time than Hoyer is today.

But to answer your question, it’s doubtful they’d be a SB team.

Brady is accused often of being a system Qb. The reverse is actually closer to truth. No Brady, no system. Hoyer would never be able to run this offense as it is imo.

The Pats win a ton of close games every year and it is hard to imagine they'd win nearly as many of them without Brady. Not only does Brady lead the offense to 27+ points a game every year he also is exceptional at changing field position. The defense had benefited immensely over the years from the favorable field position they are regularly put in. Rarely are they required to defend a short field and do not need to return to the field as quickly as the Pats have less 3 and outs than almost all teams. Even in the Super Bowl when the offense struggled to score they were consistently moving the ball, giving the defense a blow and forcing the Rams to go the full length of the field. I'm afraid that with Hoyer the offensive line will suddenly not be as good, points allowed will mysteriously go up and those last minute victories would dry up.

Both Brady and Belichick have become GOAT. because of their working relationship, but both would have been successful on their own, claiming Belichick’s success was dependent upon Brady is ridiculous.

They can. If Bill and Josh can win 11 games with Cassel, they can win 10-11 games with Hoyer and that’s good enough for a wild card. The running game will have to be absolutely dominant though.

I hear you, though that 2008 team was amazing- a 15 or 16 win team with Brady.

So via lazy math if the 2019 team is a 12 win team with Brady, that could mean 8 or 9 wins with Hoyer.

I know that’s not at all an exact science but it’s how I’m thinking of it.

Stupid thread masquerading as a general referendum on Hoyer. If Brady went down and Hoyer was leading the Patriots into the playoffs, I'd pull for them just as hard if not harder and hope for the best. Brian Hoyer is an experienced NFL quarterback, good enough to earn the faith of BB and McDaniels. That's good enough for me.

I'm trying to picture the Pats going on a 3 (or 4) game postseason run in which Hoyer doesn't have to come up huge in one or more games. The D and running game can cover for him in perhaps a game or two, but all of them?

Brady is the best the league has ever seen in the 3-4 game postseason run format, helping his team run a 3 game gauntlet 6 times...and fail eleven others. 6-11 is G.O.A.T. worthy, yet also shows how hard it is to do. Of those 6, there's always at least one game in each run in which he saved the day, else we're looking at 0-17. Hoyer looks like an 0-17 guy.

I don't know guys. This is a guy who went 10-6 over 2 years for Cleveland FREAKIN' Browns. (2013-14) He's certainly isn't a franchise QB in this league, but BB won a superbowl with the 2001 Tom Brady. He of the 18 TD's and 12 picks. Remember back when Tom was "just" a game manager averaging 203 passing ypg.

Now I don't know if Hoyer could take a team on his back and WIN games, but he is good enough to help a good team not lose games. If this defense is as good as it's potential then, yes, I think Hoyer could manage the team to the playoffs....IF we have same luck with injuries like last year, and our share of lucky bounces.

It gets a LOT harder once you're in the playoffs though. I DON'T see Brian Hoyer being good enough to win 4 straight games against THAT level of competition.

But IF we had a repeat situation of 2008, then I would expect Brian Hoyer to do enough that the Pats will be competitive in every game they play. As a fan, what more can I ask.

Hoyer is a long way and a lot of season ending injuries away from his Cleveland Browns days.
