I saw the Patriots at 12M with the top 51.

Miguel has $14.5M now, factoring in Top 51. He discovered Gordon's tender doesn't count while suspended. If reinstated, he would cost a per game prorated amount.

How can I put this clearly? Brady has never taken a pay cut. He has put some of his salary in a new bonus that spreads the cap hit over several years. We have $12M of such bonus money in the 2019 cap.

I expect Brady to sign a new extension. We can guess whether the 2 additional years are $20M, $25M or $30M a year. Additional question marks are the guarantees and the amount of the bonus.

My guess is that we will see about $5M at most in 2019 cap relief.

Brady’s salary I think is $12mm. The standard approach to an extension is to convert current year salary to bonus and accrue it over the life of the contract. So current year cap cost drops. He gets the full bonus amount up front.

What if Brady does extend and the bonus is spread over the life of the contract, and then he retires while some of it is still on the books? I expect that would become dead money, right? But if there are multiple years left does it all accelerate into the year he retires?
Anyway, with Brady nearing retirement it seems setting up to convert any of his salary to dead money would be mortgaging the future. That would be out of character for the Patriots.

Purely by my estimation that is so this isn't a fact.

I assume they will want to carry at least 5M into the season so that's why I'm saying they can spend around 8 if they choose too. Am I right? I have no idea. I'd love to hear from someone who knows more.

With respect, for the player, a contract extension is about compensation. I think that we should spend at least some focus on what compensation you expect Brady to agree to for 2020 and 2021.

Brady agrees to $23M salary in 2020 and $27M in 2021, with everything guaranteed.
Brady agrees to a 2019 salary of $3M.
$12M of this year's cap is a result of old contracts and cannot change.

ANALYSIS
1) Brady to agree to a $12M bonus, moving 8M to future years. This gives Brady ZERO extra money this year, and a non-competitive $25M a year for 2020 and 2021. Brady might take this.
2) 2019 CAP = $12M old plus $4M new bonus plus $3M salary = $20M 2019 cap
This is a 2019 cap reduction of $7M.
3) The 2020 cap hit would be $23M salary + $4M bonus = $27M cap
4) The 2021 cap hit would be $27M salary + $4M bonus = $31M cap

BOTTOM LINE
A) Do we expect Brady to be paid less than $25M a year? I don't.
B) Do we really want the cap to $16M, $27M and $31M. I don't.
C) I think that a $9M salary is much more reasonable, moving $6M forward for a cap savings of $4M. Cap hits would be $21M, $25M, and $29M. If Brady agrees to different that $23M and $27M in 2020 and 2021 salaries, I wouldn't change the bonus or 2019 salary.

Wilkerson is interesting. He missed almost all of last season with a broken ankle, so a thorough physical would obviously be in order before money is even discussed.
I'd settle for either Bennie Logan or Danny Shelton's return; the money for which either of these two would sign is probably significantly less than that for which Suh or Wilkerson would sign.

Quick question. Would it be possible to give Brady say a 10 year contract such that whatever up front money would be spread out THAT long. Given what the cap is and what is looks like and like it will looik down the road, having something like $3-5mm/yr in dead money every year, long after Brady retires is a small price to pay to have cap space NOW and next year to add significant players to the roster as needed.

Right now Miguel says we have $14MM in cap space, but that is a phony number since he has already stated we will need around $5MM to sign all the rookies. So we really only have $9MM available to sign players. Lets assume whatever contract Valdheer signs takes up around $3MM for this year. That leaves $6MM more for FA's. And then there is the fact that Pats like to keep that kind of space available for potential inseason moves.

So right now, we really don't have ANY cap space left to sign new veteran FA's past Valdheer......UNLESS Brady restructures....and I'm assuming that won't happen until after 6/1, though they really need to do it....like NOW!

But let me know if its allowable to sign Brady to something like a Bobby Bonilla kind of a deal

Wilkerson is an interesting prospect. He was a REAL beast when he played for the Jets. In fact he was my favorite Jet player for several years. But here's the thing. Regardless of what a guy's talent is, when he no longer really wants to play, it's OVER. That is what it looked like his last year with the Jets and whatever happened to him after (I don't know)

On the surface he's a perfect "play well for the Pats for a year and get paid" candidate.....IF the "want to" question can be answered
