Welcome To The Pats N'Keal Harry

Probably the worst value pick of the night (although Gruden-Mayock flying circus pushed really hard). Just goes to show how cynical BB can be with the picks: a pick is just a pick and a prospect is just a prospect . we'll see how it goes ..

Michael Lombardi: 'You're an idiot' to draft D.K. Metcalf over N'Keal Harry

I think what gives N'Keal the advantage over A.J. Brown is the fact that he was very productive for three straight years without having other top-shelf talent lining up with him like Metcalf or Lodge.

That means he responded well and still was able to produce against defenses and defense coordinator specifically designed to stop him while being the primary target for ASU.

People always state he had little separation but defenses rarely slowed him down since he stepped on the field as an 18 year old and became ASU main receiver.

He’s certainly a analytics darling. Maybe something to bear in mind for next year.

He would've been gone by 33 if we hadn't picked him.

In his 31 years of coaching, former Arizona State coach Todd Graham hasn't seen another player who was recruited more heavily or rated higher than N'Keal match his work ethic. N'Keal didn't jog in workouts, Graham remembered. He wasn't a middle-of-the-pack runner. He sprinted. He wanted to finish first. He didn't take plays off during practice.

When they'd talk privately, which happened often in the two seasons they were together at ASU, Graham would ask N'Keal what he wanted out of football. N'Keal's answer never changed: He wanted to be the best.

"This guy, in my opinion, ain't even close to as good as he's going to be," Graham said. "He was in college for 36 months. You're talking about a guy who was really young, as far as his mental maturity, emotional maturity, he was very young coming out of high school.

"He's come leaps and bounds."

Lindy’s draft guide says Harry’s nfl comparison is Thomas, who we just signed.

Hhhhmmm!!!!

As someone who wasn't in favor of this pick I'd like to play devil's advocate for myself and make the case for Harry.

#1 Has virtually no injury history
#2 He hauled in less than 40 yards in a game only 1 time in the past 2 year.
#3 The past 2 years he's had some of the best games vs best competition he's played.
#4 Probably the best run blocking WR in this draft besides Butler (invisible yards there)
#5 Very quick for a man his size. While he didn't do the 3CT at the combine I think he hit 7.08? (I think I have that right) at his proday. For a guy his weight that's pretty incredible.
#6 While he isn't a hand catcher all the time he rarely drops passes.
#7 Should be able to help instantly due to his play style.
#8 Due to his age has room to improve.

Looking at the data, and with what little I saw/heard of this player's college days, this seems to be a pick in the tradition of

Brandon LaFell
Brandon Lloyd
Malcolm Mitchell
Jabar Gaffney
David Givens

But that's what confuses me, because that's an OWR2 kind of player. BB's either seeing something most others are missing, or he went with a higher floor/lower ceiling kind of prospect. And, before people start jumping down my throat, let me note that, as I said several times during the year, I wasn't really following the college game for draft purposes. And I'm not complaining about the pick. I'm just trying to understand BB's logic behind choosing the particular player over other options at the same position.

Annoyed with myself for not recognising the Arizona St connection

Aside from Metcalf, they’re all WR2 options really at WR at this point. Deebo, AJ Brown, Ridley, Butler

Ferrell at 4? Jones at 6? Lindstrom at 14? And Howard at 23?

That age metric I saw is really interesting. It's honestly making me rethink my position on him. Still not a fan of the style but if he has a good shot to improve a lot more than most guys then that changes his outlook as a prospect for me.

I didn't have any WRs in the draft rated as tier 1 WRs, which is why the choice of taking Harry in round one is a minor puzzle. But, it's a position of need, and I'm happy BB took a WR in the first 3 picks, which is what I wanted (along with DL and TE if worthy options were/are available). Now I'm on to hoping for DE/TE/another WR, in no particular order, for the next 3 picks, and then OL after that.

All better value picks imo, even Jones who i dont care about but he is a QB and even average QBs are commodity (as pats fans should know). Ferrell remains to be seen but position has value..
