Lots of smoke about QB at #32. If so, what then?

I think it's Josh McDaniels but not 100% sure. I remember in the 2016 season when Brissett came in the third week that they had a coach but unsure of the name

McDaniels makes sense. It’ll be interesting in pre-season to see what progress, if any, Danny Etling has made.

Not jumping on the Grier bandwagon not claiming that combine velocity is a huge big deal (I actually have no idea if it's a big deal) but it's interesting that Grier is said to have an average to above average arm but had the best combine velocity this year and would have been (a close) third last year.

Of course, Maholmes' relatively low number puts doubt in the whole thing.

Mahomes has also gone over 60 when he was actually testing his max. I saw it on a draft video his year, but I don't recall where to find it again. Regardless, I think Grier has sufficient arm strength, and if he improves his footwork and throwing platform, his delivery will be quicker and he shouldn't have to worry much about any supposed lack of zip.

Understood but there's more questions about Grier's arm than his accuracy. You still need to have an NFL arm and the velocity measurement makes that somewhat less of a concern.

Whenever I see the Brady 6 the guy I feel bad for is Chad Pennington. If he had been drafted by a real franchise and hadn't had the injuries I really feel like he had HOF smarts. Even before the injuries his arm strength wasn't what Grier's is. After it was fractional. Yet Still Pennington was an above average starter on crap NYJ and Miami teams.

Brady, Manning and Brees.......none have exceptional arm strength. Brady has better velocity coming out now than he did coming out because his mechanics are far superior. I bet he would have tested out below Grier if they did this in the combine back then.

My point being it's really not a concern for me.

I’m with you on that. I view QB velocity the same way I view velocity from an MLB pitcher. There’s a bare minimum threshold you need to have in order to succeed at the top level, but once you exceed the bare minimum, other factors become much more important than the incremental MPH.

Chad Pennington had that bare minimum, but that last injury dropped him below the threshold and he was done quickly after that. He was successful beforehand because he had all those other attributes, but wasn’t as successful as he could have been because he had that Jets terrible coaching stink on him.

Pedro Martinez was the best pitcher in baseball from 1997 - 2001 because he had absolutely everything. After his 2001 injury he didn’t have the same fastball, but he was still a clone of Greg Maddux from 2002-2004 because the fastball was still good enough (combined with Maddux’s accuracy, change up, release point consistency, poise and instincts - at that point they were pretty much the same pitcher). But after that point his fastball dropped even further - and then he was done fairly quickly.

There's a ton of QBs are there who could play but just couldn't throw at any NFL level. Brady likely had poor velocity on draft day but he is a 6'5" stud now who can throw every pass. Not all these guys can get velocity on sideline outs. Velocity isn't the most important thing but it's still really important. I think Grier can throw well enough; in case we draft him I'm glad to see the velocity reading. If velocity didn't matter, Colt McCoy and his ilk would be starting QB in the league.

He’d be fine if he just torqued his hips more through his delivery. He’s almost entirely an arm thrower. That one change could transform him as a QB.

Colt McCoy had a lot of other issues. If you look at that list there's plenty of guys below Grier who have been successful so as Hammer of Thor said he meets the minimum.

After watching far to many videos of QB's in this draft class, the only QB I'd want the Pats to take (outside of Kyler Murray, which isn't happening) would be Brett Rypien. The rest of this class strikes me as back-up material, a group of Ryan Tannehills.

Greer in particular doesn't seem to be a fit for the Pats. While he is an accurate passer, his throwing motion is laborious & he makes far too many mistakes with the football. I'd be OK with Jones or Stidholm, but they both strike me as very average QB's that are probably destined to be career back-ups. Rypien has a nice quick & smooth delivery and great accuracy. He makes good decisions and excels in the short passing game. He reminds me a bit of Jimmy G, but doesn't quite have Jimmy's arm strength. I still think he could be a very good fit in this offense.

Grier would be the only QB I wouldn't hate picking assuming it's not at 32.

I’d be disappointed with a qb period. To me, It’s win now mode every year while Brady can still compete.

And what about if he goes down? Brian Hoyer in 2019 a solution?

The likelihood of any of these qbs making a difference if Brady goes down is about 0. If he goes down then just pack it in and wait for the next season.

Just feel it's awful to give in if 12 goes down

As does BB

Um, not believing that any rookie in this class is going to make that "awful" feeling disappear if Brady goes down.

most teams are screwed when their starter goes down. This isn't news worthy.

I was using this same logic with my boss. It was a luxury when we had Jimmy G. It's all about timing. Joe Montana just happened to be nearing the end of his career when Steve Young was ready to take over.
