Solid Draft
The Patriots walked away with 10 pretty solid additions coming off draft weekend, injecting some youth into the Super Bowl champs' roster.

Current Patriots Twitter Feed:

Lots of smoke about QB at #32. If so, what then?

Before you dismiss all of the reports linking the Pats and QBs as "smokescreen season," consider that we only seem to talk about smokescreens when we don't want a rumor to be true. ;) Yes, plenty of misinformation circulates this time of year, but plenty of real information, too. And honestly, who are we kidding? Of course the Patriots need a serious developmental QB prospect.

So my question is: what happens to every mock and every strategic draft plan if the Patriots take a Will Grier at #32? What priority do you drop? What riskier prospects to you hope to rely on?

Our draft day options include trading for an OT and/or a DL. We also could sign either or both after the draft. This would be instead of drafting at that position at 32.

I could live with Grier. I like a lot of his traits. Anyone else at 32 and I'd be very depressed. It's funny you bring this up today, though, because I tried a mock earlier with Grier at 32; I was a bit nonplussed at the board after that. Basically, it meant no premium DL or OT. That could obviously be different in real life, but it still left me with a disappointed feeling by the end of the exercise. I guess it's good practice for Thursday. ;)

I think it restricts you from using 73 to trade up because you want that for a WR or TE to fall to.

    1. Hope Greg Little falls to 56 or go with Yodny Cajuste or Scharping later.

    2. TE at 64

    3. 2 x WRs in 3rd (Hardman & Boykin? Ridley?)

    4. Defense on day 3.

    That’s how I’d play it.

In the thread about Patri0ts types to take in this draft I said Grier would be my choice for Qb. He has a quick Garoppolo style release and would be a good development project but I don't think he's worth a 1st. That being said, there are always risers and he might be one of them. We'll see soon enough. IMO, I think BB will take a player that'll be starter material right off the bat and could be a left OT. I thought Wynn was taken to groom for one of the OG spots and could very well be an All Pro in a couple of years if Thuney moves on. I don't think it's smart to expect Wynn to step right in at OT coming off an achilles so I won't be surprised if BB takes an OT with 32

    56 Zach Allen
    64 Jace Sternberger
    73 Andy Isabella
    97 Max Scharping
    101 Khalen Saunders

As one example of something I'd be happy with if things fell with a QB at 32.

Fill in the blanks after that but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

That said when they draft Saquan Hampton at 56.........

    Without comment on specific QB:

    - With 2 #2s and 3 #3s we have plenty of currency to fill needs. Especially with lower picks we can package together to move up or make more trades for veterans like Bill is so good at.

    - There's still usable vets like Shelton, Bailey, etc, who can fill holes.

    - I have a simple philosophy - don't take a QB just to take one but if you are sure the right one is there, there's no price too high. If we took, say, Grier, and he was a good starter from 2023-2033, we won't care what need went unfilled in 2019.

    56 - Charles Omenihu
    64 - Jace Sternberger
    73 - David Long
    97 - Chuma Edoga
    101 - Diontae Johnson
134 - double down on TE or WR

needs would be filled still fairly well.

We all remember the smoke regarding Lamar Jackson last year so I dont take much stock in rumors the week leading up to the draft.

It's a fun smokescreen but I believe that is all it is. Maybe the Pats want to drive up the price of their pick if they trade down. Teams that are interested in Grier might offer a choice package like a 2nd rounder plus a future 1st.

A 5 year contract? Might not be long enough!

Seriously though, it all depends. I'm not against it but you have to hit on the guy. I agree with it being Will Grier. I like him more than just about any QB this draft and he'll be the only one in our range I'd want. He reminds me a lot of Jimmy G who BB loved.

If you’re Worried that someone you like might get taken just ahead of you, it makes sense to get someone to trade ahead of you to take a QB. One less slot to take a non QB you like.

I totally agree. When it comes to QBs, "value" in terms of draft slot goes out the window. If you think the guy can be The Guy, he's worth taking the chance on.

Garappolo was drafted at 62 and most today would agree he's worth a first round pick. If the Pats have a similar grade on Grier, I'm good with the pick. That being said, alternatively I would be fine if the Pats use their four 7th round picks to take fliers on long shot QB prospects. It would be a thrill of a life time for them and Brady could give them all an autographed football that they could take with them on cut-down day.

Whether any rumors are true or not only time will tell. But, as I’ve posted in several threads, Charlie Weis on his SiriusXM show has been a proponent of Grier for months. He talked about him as a 1st rounder way back before the combine.

I have no idea if Belichick and McDaniels share his opinion of Grier. But, aside from those two men, I don’t think anyone knows more about what it takes to play and excel in the Patriots system than Weis does, so I respect his opinion.

    Lock in the first
    Jones in the second
    Grier in the third
Stidham or Jackson in the fourth
Rosen could still be a option at 32.

Serious question re Will Grier. Is there a QB coach on the team right now?

I think it's Josh McDaniels but not 100% sure. I remember in the 2016 season when Brissett came in the third week that they had a coach but unsure of the name
