Report: Chung Signs Contract Extension

I expect at least one head scratcher next weekend. I wonder if a first round OL qualifies. There are indications that could happen and it certainly wasn’t what I considered a primary need but I can see the potential logic too it - there’s certainly value at 32 on OL. Maybe not a true head scratcher but a little bit strange.

I really like how this draft lines up with our needs, but BB is his own man when it comes to the draft.

No one should complain about a first round OT, but it will be tempting when there are many of our shiny toys remaining on the board. At the end of the day, I just want to see some high round picks in the trenches + someone to catch a football at WR/TE. Everything else will be gravy.

I don’t think the draft picks will have too much impact on 2019 unless we get some luck and I don’t plan for that. We will need a very good defense, an outstanding Brady, Josh Gordon’s Return and excellent coaching to get back to the SB again. Thankfully, all those things are more than possible. And more good news. As things stand, we have 12 draft picks this year and 12 picks next year so the future is hopefully protected too.

I don’t see any reason why we can’t expect an impact player for 2019 with 6/101 picks. This current team is not as deep and talented as we’re used to seeing. There are holes to fill and it’s quite possible that someone can make a difference, whether that be at DT, DE, OL, WR, TE, or even in the secondary.

I just don’t see this as the typical type of “luxury” draft where most of the spots are already taken. That said, a good draft (and some actual return on the injured rookies from last year) and we could be right back to the old days where 2020 brings some high quality picks that are stockpiled for the future.

If the player with the highest grade when we pick at #32 is OL then thats what they will do unless there is a value trade to be had.

I cant believe that some people keep falling into the trap thinking that what fans/media perceive as immediate needs are somehow priorities in the draft. If anything how the team approached LB last year should be a recent enough example to show that this is not the case.

Sometimes needs and the board line up. I hope it will be the case in a week just to lessen the inevitable whining from some armchair captains.

I can actually see a tackle in the first round. Easily. Brown walked and Wynn is coming back from an Achilles and we don’t even know what we have in him. Plus, Brady will be 42 by the time the season gets underway. Have to protect him more than ever now.

Cannon is a concussion away from retirement, Wynn tore his achilles and we have no backups. OT is not my preference at 32 but it would be a reasonable pick.

I’m not saying there aren’t holes to fill because there are some gaping ones (and I question BB’s forward planning on that), what I’m saying is that it’ll be tough for a rookie to produce significantly in year one simply because of the learning curve involved. A WR or TE will need to earn Brady’s trust for example

I think that was purely need-based, that year. I would be surprised if Meriweather was the highest rated player on the board, but who knows for sure?

I think that is a reasonable take. Its highly possible the team strayed from its drafting philosophy.

I mean...from 2004 to 2009 their drafting was erratic to not good

04- Wilfork, Watson in 1....after that was garbage
05- Mankins in 1, Hobbs 3....Cassell Rd7.
06- LoMo- 1, Gost 4
07- Big Bang Clock in 1....zip the rest
08-Mayo in 1. Slater in 5th

I'm not sure why we have to go through this every year, but here goes. Belichick has made it clear, both via interview and via his actual drafting, that need is a part of the team's formula for drafting players:

"It starts with value," Belichick said. "You value the players, however you put a grade on them. You value them, and then within that, there’s a draft strategy, maybe where you think that player is going to go in the draft, what the league thinks of him relative to what your individual team thinks of him, and need can sometimes factor into that, too, or maybe the compilation of your roster. I shouldn’t necessarily say need — a player that you see having a bigger impact on your team because of whatever the circumstances are on your team versus another one that may — for the same value for lack of a better word — duplicate something that you already have and maybe make it less valuable for your particular team at that particular point in time.
