Patriots Pre-Draft Contacts List 2019

An awful lot of work on interior OL. I have a feeling they don't think Thuney will be cheap to re-sign next year, or that they worry about depth. Interesting.

The Pats interior behind Andrews and Mason is empty after this season. Thuney, Karras, and Ferentz are all UFA. I would not be surprised at all to see Thuney and Karras signed away by other teams. There's a reason the Pats brought back Schwenke. And I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft an OC/OG.

This is why I’m quite taken with Andre Dillard as a possible pick. LT of the future with Wynn being LG of the future and with either of them being swing tackle in ‘19.

Not having kept up to date on all the jargon.. What's this "Top 30" visit designation that I keep hearing about for teams???

It’s not top 30; rather it’s that teams are allowed to bring 30 prospects into the stadium to meet with them. Some have taken it to mean it’s the clearest sign of interest in a player. Draft stats haven’t fully born that out. Some have speculated they use it primarily on players they have questions about and want to fill in the blanks.

One example, Nate Solder was supposed to have an official visit. Last minute the Patriots canceled and used it on someone else. Given the eventual outcome, clearly they were satisfied they had everything they needed on him.

That said, I'm fairly certain we drafted 4 of the official 30 visits last year, so that's pretty good odds compared with just throwing darts at a full draft board.

It can however, give an idea and what positions they’re looking at in the draft and the value they’re looking at ie first/second round offensive linemen for example.

They’re not allowed to work these 30 visit prospects out. It’s purely about film sessions, meeting coaches and medicals. And there are also local visits that don’t count towards the 30. So anyone from UMass or BC probably doesn’t count towards the 30.

Grier >>>>>> Jones for me.

Not studied either but the NFL seems to like Jones more if the media big boards are accurate. Who has the quicker release? I think that would be the pick.

Jones has very nice footwork and mechanics. He looks like a QB should. He's like a Peyton Manning clone in terms of movement / throwing, which makes sense since they shared a coach. But then you watch him play in real live games and something is just missing. He's fairly safe and "correct" with what he does on plays, but sometimes in order to win you have to be willing to take risks. The amount of times I saw him immediately go to his checkdown on 3rd and 8+ was just infuriating. Yes, the back was open. No, he wasn't in position to move the chains.

A QB must be willing to move the ball in my opinion. I watched one game wherein Jones finished the first half something like 10/12 for 100 yards and no first downs (I'm exaggerating slightly here, but not by much). Brady is patient enough to dink and dunk when it makes sense, but he's aggressive with deep shots if he thinks they'll work, and he wants to string together first downs. Jones seems to be content to just take what's available all day but without the killer instinct. Is that fair? I don't know. He's passive, though, and I'm not a fan.

Grier needs to be reined in a bit, on the other side of the spectrum, and I think he's a round 2 sort of guy due to some deficiencies in play and technique, but he's the one I'd trust if I needed a comeback win. That's my unfair and biased take. Two years on the bench and he could be a mid-upper level starter, although likely not an all pro. I'll take it.

How much of Jones’ conservatism stems from the talent around him? I think I read that his OL were fairly poor.

IMO a good QB elevates his OL performance.

I'll try to go through some games later and show some examples. Not my favorite QB.

EDIT: I should add that he probably grades out really well with his coaches. He makes some solid reads and when he has time his throws are really pretty. I don't want to spend a 1st on a QB, but if the Patriots think he has the right stuff after sitting two or three years, then I'll defer to them. I'd rather add pieces around Brady, but QB is always the most important position.

I think a lot here agree with you.

Another top 40 WR

Actually, they sent Scar to Colorado to work him out. Those 30 visits are reported to other teams, while going to see a player isn't.
