Could Tackle Position Be A Priority In the Draft?

Perhaps my memory is failing, but I believe that we trade up, down and out in about the same proportions. Didn't we trade up for Chandler and Hightower?

My point was simply that if they trade up = a priority....if not = not a priority..just taking BPA.

Interesting that the Pats have traded up as much as they have traded down....wonder how many trade ups were due to having an excess of picks...I hardly remember major trade ups in the first round (not since Mayo, IIRC)....

Lindstrom is an interior guy who has played RT. Mcgary is a RT that some think doesn’t have the length to play there in the NFL.

33.5” arms aren’t especially long especially on a 6’3” frame. I could understand the talk about moving him inside at the time, but his tape was so good at LT, I always thought that he should at least be tried out there first. Still do.

I’m just referring to height. Bottom line is he is 6’2. That is much smaller than the average LT. Just about every starting LT in the NFL isn’t anything much under 6’4. That is a fact.

Yeah I get it. Though I think the height isn't doesn't matter at all, but taller people generally have longer arms and that IS an issue the way pass blocking techniques are taught.

On the surface longer armed DE/OLB's would SEEM to have an advantage over shorter armed OT's because it would appear that THEY would be able to make the all important initial strike. So I get your concern. HOWEVER, that initial strike isn't the entire end all in pass protection. His arm length was measured at 33.5". Are you thinking that if it had been an INCH and a half longer his success would have been assured? If that were the case, all you'd have to do is check the arm length of any boxing match and place your bet. And we both know that isn't realistic. And for the record, Matt Light's arm length was 33.5" and Volmer's was 33.25. So why would Wynns arm length be an issue?

It's all about timing, footwork, explosion, and discipline that creates a successful pass block. Wynn reportedly has THOSE qualities in abundance. THAT makes him a great prospect. Whether he can turn that into being the LT that sends TB into retirement is all about his "want to". So we'll have to see about that.

I can remember going back to the early 2000's, Matt Light was constantly getting *****ed about when he played speed rushers like Jason Taylor.

Back then you could find almost weekly quotes by me speculating that while Light was a "decent" LT he'd be "elite" at LG, and the team would be smart to make that move. Fast forward about a decade and history would show that the Pats made the right decision. Maybe not for Light's individual career, but he was very solid for a long time at LT.

So it is legitimate to speculate about how Wynn would be an elite OG prospect. However if he ends up having a similar career to Light's at LT, it will prove well worth the high pick even if he doesn't end up a perennial all pro and just a good starter

Unfortunately I never got to see Light in college but I will say that Wynn’s tape was elite. But I agree, if Wynn’s ceiling is Matt Light, I’d be more than fine with the pick.

I don't want McGary at the spot where we will likely need to draft him. His arms are shorter than Wynn's, into the T-Rex Thuney range.

I do remember Jason Taylor seemed like his “Kryptonite”. Other than that, he didn’t really seem to struggle that much.

Unless somebody such as Greg Little falls to 56, I'd rather use 73 on Oklahoma's Bobby Evans, or on Ohio State's Mike Jordan as a FIVE-position backup while leaning the Tackle positions.

He’s a very nice run blocker. I don’t love the idea of taking an OL high this year, but running will be important to this offense moving forward so I’m not totally opposed.

For a while, it seemed the patriots have been drawn to taller offensive tackles. Solder and Vollmer were 6’8”.

Then they brought in brown also at 6’8”. But I don’t think they brought in brown because he was tall as much as it was because he is a “furniture mover”.

Our new offensive tackle has to be able to move people backwards at the snap of the ball in the running game. Let’s face it, Brady gets the ball out really quickly, makes our ot’s Life a bit easier. (Just ask solder)

Cannon and now Wynn but especially brown destroy people at the snap of the ball.

Mcgary is not a pass blocking technician but he is a monster in the run game. The height is an extra added bonus. Mcgary makes perfect sense for a team transitioning into the 1990 giants.

Anything's possible with BB. Having said that, I don't see any reason to make OT a draft priority, if they still think Wynn's ready to be the starting LT.

Wynn should play LT until he shows us that he can’t. His college tape is Elite and his feet are so quick.
