OPTION 1
WR $100M/5 with a 2019 cap of $9.5M
$40M bonus/5 years
2019 salary - $1.5M
2020 salary - $2.5M
2021 salary - $17M
2022 salary - $19M
2023 salary - $20M

OPTION 2
TE $9.5M/1 year with a 2019 cap of $9.5M

BOTTOM LINE
We might have gotten OBJ for the above contract, or not. But, let's be clear, it is NOT a matter of affording such a huge contract under our cap.

Any contract can fit under any cap, that doesnt make it smart.
You are ignoring future cap expenditures by looking only at year 1
You are ignoring the cost of the trade and the value esp value to cost of those players.
You are ignoring that you are comparing a winner to a whiner.

We agree.

Your point is my point. Any contract can fit under the cap.

Year 2 cap would also be small, although that isn't necessary, given our 2020 cap situation.

Yes, I am ignoring that fact that it cost resources to acquire a player, any player.

Finally, you are comparing 1 year of Gronk to 5 years of OBJ, and choosing Gronk. That's fine. The point is that we have the choice, and always have the choice.

We broke the bank for Gilmore. We could choose to do it for a wide receiver. The patriots CHOOSE not to spend considerable resources on WR's, and to instead use resource on the secondary.

As an aside, I was shocked (and find it hard to believe) that the patriots were willing to pay $10M a year to Humphries.

I would spend the money on Gronk and gamble that Gordon will be available for the latter half, if not all of the season.

very reasonable

I remember Brady with the old Gronk.

And, I remember Brady and Moss.

Yup. I also remember Bledsoe to Coates. It was a bright spot on those teams.

OBJ is mentally unstable.

Crazy to invest in someone who might go off the deep end after you pay him.

I don't know... his issues seem to be primarily on the field. He hates losing and reacts like a child over it. Antonio Brown, however... mentally unstable would be an understatement.

yup

I'm sure folks said the same about Moss.

I don't think that there is any question. If we had acquired OBJ, we would have had the top QB-WR combination in the NFL. That, along with our defense and OL, would have made us even more likely to win it all.

Is it just me...or are NFL WR's more susceptible to being a Diva vs. other positions?

Mental case.

I don't know, he kind of sounds like the man to be honest.
Yeah, hanging out with saggy pants wannabe Bieber on a yacht.

Bebe didn't go swimming because that would have messed his hair all up.

Mike Mayock had some interesting things to say about Brown. That he practices harder than anyone else. That he employees a nutritionist who is always present. That Brown told Mayock that he wants to break Rice's records. Hard to discredit Mayock regardless of his position.

I'd take Option #1 for Josh Rosen to back up Tom Brady
