The draft

He was a tight end. He couldn't block. The Patriots drafted him.
But he wasn't an Inline TE, big difference. Kelce wouldn't be used here because he is trash at blocking from the traditional TE spot. Hernandez didn't line up at the line, he either playered out of the slot or split wide. He wasn't used as a TE so he isn't a valid example.

There's also Greedy Williams and Lil'Jordan Humphrey.

I thought he was at least part-Asian until I googled the name. Nope.

This guy is officially my draft day binkie. Rock-Ya Sin.

He was absolutely used as an inline tight end on about a third of his snaps, and he was used as an inline tight end in college.

Gronk often lines up in the slot. James White lines up in the slot as well on many occasions, that doesn't make him a wide receiver. The point is the Patriots will draft all sorts of players and slot them into their offense. Saying they won't draft a guy who's listed as a tight end because he can't block is silly when they've both drafted and acquired such players in the past. Saying they wouldn't use Travis Kelce is completely asinine.

So I am getting into discussions here at work about DK Metcalf's combine numbers. Freakish fast in a straight line, great jumping ability, crazy strong. Terrible in the 3 cone and the shuttle. Like worse than Brady. College highlights here:

My thought is that is that the one highlight at the 2min mark shows you that he's got great burst out of his stance, terrible or lazy feet on the break, and then great speed down the sidelines. He's great at go routes and fade/jump balls in the end zone. But put him in jam coverage, make him move his feet, and put a safety over the top and he's done, IMO. So, are his weak areas coach-able? Can you fix it, or can he, with a lot of work? Looks to me like a one trick pony. There's lots of fast, strong guys in the NFL. But can this kid run a route?

Some GM will get enamored with the combine and take him high in round 1. But I think you can't overlook his glaring weaknesses. Thoughts? A steal in round 2, but a big risk at the top of round 1.

With that description, and risk profile, it sounds as if he's a steal in round 4, not before.

That is a fair argument and can agree with that. I still find Kelce to be overrated. He benefits from single coverage like Jimmy Graham used to in NO and Julius Thomas in Denver.

Alabama TE Irv Smith Jr. is a name Patriots fans should get to know

“I feel like just the versatility,” he said last week when asked what NFL teams should know about him. “Most tight ends, they can either block or run routes, but I feel like I bring a combination that’s going to change the position for the future of the tight end. … Every great tight end, they can catch balls and they can block. So, you need to be able to do both in the NFL. I feel like I can bring that aspect.”

Not a huge fan not overly explosive or a amazing blocker not the greatest hands.
A poor man's Daniel Graham.
Id rather take a chance on a tight end in the middle rounds.
If Hockenson doesn't fall within our range.

I'll be happy with Hock, Fant or him...it's one thing to be confident...but his comment is a little out there.

Mocks have him going as high as as 4 to the Raiders. What makes the most sense to me is 17 to the Browns. Let Mayfield throw go's and fades to him. I think the kid is going to be tough in the red area, I think going to the Browns at 17 is a good fit.

My guess is the Broncos after trading Keenum go Daniel Jones in the 1st that's ok because Patriots grab The higher ceiling player In Jarret Stidham in the second.
Or trade for Rosen.

Gil Brandt is a stand up guy. Casserly....not so much...

✔@Gil_Brandt

"About this Kyler Murray situation: 1) Only 1 team put him in front of white board. 2) The questions about leadership, study habits run counter to my experience w/ Kyler, who I've known since he was a HS soph. Have known his dad for 30 years. Honestly, it all sounds fabricated."

Bill Belichick...“Who’s been wrong more than Charley Casserly since he left the Redskins? His percentage is like a meteorologist.”

Bill Belichick..."Looking at Gil Brandt and the job that he did with the personnel, he certainly should be in the Hall of Fame based on his contributions to this game and contributions to the personnel and scouting side of it." "He'd probably be the first guy I would put in there."

One of the drawbacks to having the Patriots old coaching staff in Miami is you’re not going to be able to sneak a Berrios or someone like him onto the PS for further development. They’re going to have to be on the 53 or they’re off to South Beach.
I think that applies to all teams looking at the Patriot's castoffs after the final cutdown.......The Pats are the standard and most final cuts the Pats make would improve another team's roster in most cases.... JMHO
