It's easy, and only takes a few moments.Agreed, I saw a video about Etling, and Etling was the only QB in last year's draft that seemed to meet their criterias. Which is weird. But supposedly he's really smart, loves football (not shocking), and several other things they liked. This isn't grocery shopping. If BB sees someone in this draft that he thinks he can work with I'm not gonna lose any sleep about the greener grass on the other hill.
The key is a QB who can learn to operate in the system, minimize mistakes, and that can give the OC enough tools to work with to construct a potent offense. I don't care who that QB is as long as he ticks those boxes, is there a guy who could be a little better, of course, there always is, but we thought that about Brady for years too. As long as BB gets a guy who can operate the offense at a competent level, I won't care if there are "better" QBs out there. It'll be like a return to 01-06
If we "reach" for a pick, and it works, then it wasn't a reach.
"reaching" relative to draft position only matters when it doesn't result in a competent NFL contributor, and in that case, a bust is a bust no matter when he was drafted
Sweating this whole draft science thing is really not worth my time and energy and I won't pretend to be competent on the subject. I file that whole mess under "details" and sweating the details is BB the GM's job, not mine.
Why would we get an "NFL Ready" clipboard holder?I get this, and it makes sense, but after 18+ years with the GOAT do you think ‘competent’ is all we should be after? Why can’t we aim for a polished ‘NFL ready’ first round QB to take over?
I’d like something similar, except targeting a 1st round pick next year so we can get a shot at that QB class. We’d be looking for a team that 1) thinks it’s a QB away from winning, but 2) isn’t in good position to trade up because it fancies itself a playoff contender based on its 2018 performance (just a QB away!), 3) in reality is more likely to crash and burn than make the playoffs next year. I’m liking the Washington Redskins here, with Alex Smith out for the season most likely. Let’s say the Kirk Cousins comp pick (#96) and their 2020 first rounder and call it a day.....I hope there is a QB there at #32. Then we trade back and pick up an extra 2nd.
On the topic of picking a QB in the first round, I'm sold on this guy if he falls.
What if Lock falls? Why waste a 1st round pick on a QB? Your current QB has taken you to eight straight AFC Championship games and three straight Superbowls. He says he is playing at least another couple of years. So why not surround him some more talent and keep on winning. The Pats gave him Michel last year, and I think Michel was hurt most of the year and that next year, you are going to see the real Sony Michel.
If Gronk retires (and I hope he doesn't), and even if he comes back, this is a great TE draft. I think the Pats should double dip at both TE and WR, both positions are very deep.
I'm with Kezor Soze, hopefully there is a QB left on the board at 32, that some team wants and is willing to trade for. Last year the Ravens gave up picks #52, #125 and a 2019 2nd round pick for picks #32 and #132. If I'm the Pats I try and hold out for a 2020 1st round pick (then maybe you have the draft capital to find Brady's replacement). Plus the 2020 QB class is much better than the 2019 class.
What if Lock falls?

What if Lock falls?
Do you take a flier on a mid round QB?
Or not bother?
Other than Wynn.It depends on what the Pats think of Hoyer. If he is staying, they can hope to carry Etling for another year on the practice squad, otherwise, whoever you pick is going to be on someone else roster come the beginning of the season. If you think you can draft someone who is better than Hoyer (not a tall task I admit) but polished enough that you feel comfortable handing him the back up job, then sure go ahead and use one of the third round picks on him. But still, I think the Pats would be better served keeping Hoyer, and drafting more talent for Brady with those picks.
The Pats got extremely lucky this year on the injury front, usually they lose at least one key player to injury a season. That did not happen this year, but I don't think you can count on that happening again, so depth is important, when you are looking to win championships.
NFL Media draft expert Daniel Jeremiah: QB Daniel Jones 'would make a lot of sense' for Patriots at No. 32
Interesting, even if it's a "fake buzz." LOL
One downside: he won't be able to handle the inevitable comparisons...
...he's not as pretty as Jimmy.
QB is a crap shoot for every Jimmy G there is like five Kevin O'Connell's.
