Patriots players surprise local single mother dedicated to giving back

Saw this on the news feed this morning and felt it needed some wider attention.

Well done to Devin McCourty, Kyle Van Noy, Duron Harmon and Derek Rivers for giving back to the community, and to the Krafts for apparently matching the money the players put into these kinds of efforts.

Was her car totally destroyed?

I mean, 5 players and a billionaire owner took her car to be repaired. So they shelled out $2k, Kraft shelled out $1k himself.

I mean, they should have bought her a Subaru for $20k! That would be worth reading.

if $2k was enough to get her car in working order again, why spend $20k for a new car? that's $18k less that they could use to help other people.

i like that they gave her a helping hand and not a brand new car which might have been more newsworthy but completely unnecessary. kind of like the deshaun watson story, where he renovated his mom's perfectly good existing house rather than buy her a brand new mega-mansion.

The article said she needed a new transmission. Depending on make & model and depending on rebuild vs. actually new, that's likely a repair in the 2.5K-4K range, maybe more.

(sadly, speaking from experience, my 2.8 K rebuild just came out of the shop today)

Lotta coin for a single parent with low income.

Plus it is part of a program to do good deeds in the community. I am sure that the program has a budget. You can do a lot more 3K good deeds than 20K good deeds.

Anywho, I know I was being an arse. But I'd be lying if I said that wasn't my initial reaction (also, someone in my household--ahem--gave $600 this week to a friend in need, so I appreciate how these things go). Just felt like it took 5 of them and an owner to do that.

When you get to a certain age a lot of people no longer want to move. I live well below my means. I could move into a much bigger place. But I am perfectly happy where I am. Nice, peaceful property. I have enough acerage that I don't have to see or hear my neighbors, yet I am close to town and I have all the amenities I would have with a mansion, just less space. I have have no desire to live in what would essentially be a hotel, with maids and other staff constantly disrupting my privacy.

I think a lot of people reach a certain level of wealth and they feel like they need to show it off or just need to spend it They start blowing it on huge homes/hotels, cars, yachts, vacation homes, art, etc. I doubt it makes them any happier or significantly improves their quality of life. As Americans we are conditioned to think bigger is better, but that's not necessarily true. Depends on the person. It's completely subjective. Warren Buffet is worth, what, 80 something billion? Lives in the same house he bought in the 1950s for 31k.
