The draft

When are you thinking? He should be available for our 2nd second, or even in the 3rd.
No. Hockenson likely won't make it to 1.32. Fant or Smith could get to us but they aren't the complete TE that Hockenson is.

Given need and BB draft history trading our #1 and Bears #2 to get Hockenson is very possible

I haven't been following enough.

I just checked. Jeremiah has DET considering him at 8, although he admits that this may be too high. A couple of sources have GB considering him at 12.

I guess that our 1st and first 2nd would get us up to about 17.

I guess the rankings will become a lot clearer we get much closer.
I'm expecting him to go in the 12-20 range. The draft is a weird beast but if he makes it to 32, something has likely happened that would make us pass too. It's a deep TE class and BB has clearly shown it's a position he values in the first round.

So here is my hopeful scenario that will never happen, and I’m sure not many others will like. Here we go...
First, BB sets up visit after visit with QBs in the 2019 draft putting out there that we are very interested in a QB. Next we hope that a middle pack team like Washington goes some other position at their spot this year, but panics and trades back into the first with the Pats to select their QB of the future, giving NWE a 2020 1st and a 2019 3rd. That said team rides the struggle bus in 2019 and lands us a top 10 pick. We proceed to draft Tua, Fromm, Herbert or whomever steps up in next years QB class. Then we take best player available at 32 after goodell hands us another trophy in early 2020. Just sayin.

I know I posted this somewhere—maybe earlier on this thread—so let me repeat it: right now, about two months out from the draft, one-third to one-half of the players analysts have in the middle of the first round won't be drafted until the second round.

Sure, but Hockenson probably isn’t too likely to be included in this group. Wouldn’t you agree?

That's the thing, though: there's no real logic to it.

He won the John Mackey award as the nation’s best TE as a sophomore. I think that says it all, right there.

Most of the draft projections that I’ve seen claim that he’s not only the best blocking TE in the draft, but also the better receiver when compared to Fant. I’ve noticed that he’s been shooting up boards lately, as high as #7 or #8. I’m not sure if he’s going to make it out of the top 10, let alone the first round.

As you’ve said, there’s always a chance and sometimes these players can fall, but I think he’s long gone by the middle of the first. I’d love to have him, though.

I can’t believe the Patriots are getting a pair of 3rd round comp picks for Nate Solder and Malcolm Butler. It seems like the Giants and Titans should get the picks to help offset these enormous mistakes that are eating up their cap and ability to compete. One day the league will realize that comp picks no longer make sense in a league with a salary cap - whereby the decision to let a free agent walk is balanced out by using those same dollars elsewhere on the roster. Until then the Patriots will continue to feast on this loophole.

Andy is training w Moss. Said he ran 4.26. Who knows.

Deebo is 215 so im expecting high 4.4-low 4.5.
Deebo will be low 4.5s but he is faster than that on the field. I honestly don't want him to run faster than that because he will skyrocket.

Hockenson is a great prospect but their are others that are just as good if not better from a rec standpoint. Worst case, as good as him. His hype is peaking as we speak.

4.5 is very fast. Its his quicks that make players like him work. That gains separation & 4.5 is plenty fast enough to rip off huge chunks.

If we want him we must use 1.32 on him.

This 2019 TE class seems vastly overrated a lot of move TE's really lacking that Y-inline guy. Your run game would really suffer with most of these guys. Might have to double dip to make it work or pay someone good in FA. I am not seeing any one Player that's complete: I am actually hoping Gronk returns for one or two more years. I know we had Gronk but we may have sat on our hands at that position for far too long. Back to the 2019 TE crop some can run like a deer catch with the best of them but can't block a fly. Others look the part but would barely Brady beat Brady in a foot race don't expect any yac yards from them. Some of them when they run the 40 are going to be timed in June seriously.

A lights out Draft would really make your argument solid until then.... Though we have had a lot of Draft picks our success in Draft have been paltry. Trades - FA and UDFA is what have helped this Team not necessarily Top Draft picks. We have capital again we have to hit on some of them.

Fun fact for a little perspective, the Pats offense only had three former 1st round picks on the 53 - Sony Michel, Cordarelle Patterson and Philip Dorsett. The defense had six (!) - Gilmore, DMac, Brown, HT, Shelton, Claiborne.

On edit: Credit to Elijah for pointing CP out.

What about Patterson?

My point is that the draft is inherently irrational and subjective. Even the concept of utility that Belichick uses depends on subjective judgments ("How much will this player help the team?").
