The future's bright for next year. I think that the main cause of concern comes in 3-4 years, but so much will change by then! Let's enjoy what we just did, but also think about the next 1-2 years.

Our team shouldn't have a crazy amount of turnover in free agency. We should be able to sign the key guys and have replacements in place for those departing - Trent Brown for example perhaps. The secondary will remain excellent. Our DL will likely go through the biggest overhaul, but if we can keep Trey Flowers and the better or cheaper of Shelton/Brown we should be solid. LB core will be good AND we get Bentley back.

Offense shouldn't be too bad. OL will remain near the top regardless of Brown - we have Wynn in the back. The back end of the WR core will be subject to change, but if we're being serious here, they weren't really relevant for most of the playoffs. As long as we have Edelman, we have a good shot. The TE position will take the biggest hit, but we've shown in the past that we don't need a HoF-type TE to win games - this year and 2016 proved that. Hopefully we get a good replacement for Gronk and/or Allen. RB position should be just as strong next year w/ the development of Michel likely. Brady won't get any worse.

Remember to factor in basically the ENTIRE 2017 draft class coming back with a year of learning.

This includes Isaiah Wynn, Duke Dawson (basically...), JaWhaun Bentley, Braxton Berrios, Ryan Izzo, and Christian Sam. That by itself is a good group of added players!

Then factor in a 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd... and you get the drift. This isn't the 2018 Los Angeles Rams that mortgaged the future for 1-2 years of having a bunch of top-tier talent on the roster. This is a team that will be adding a LOT of young players next season and doesn't have a single position outside of TE that will be hurt this offseason. The future looks bright boys.

I don't want to look ahead tonight but since you brought it up...

I think this may be our last super bowl appearance. This team is old and poised to lose some key players. We will be in borderline rebuild mode next year. If the Pats need to rebuild then by the time they are good to go Brady's window will be gone : (

I'm just enjoying this one though. We will see how the draft and FA goes as well as who if anyone retires.

The other thing is every other year seems to be an injury year where we lose 2 or 3 key guys (2013, 2015, 2017) and 2019 is coming up. We really DODGED a bullet this year by staying healthy. Just think if Michel was lost for the season after the Bears game...

It seems like “health” was the MVP of the year for the Patriots. A lot of things fortunately went their way this season when it came to that.

Brady and BB are the window, the rest will fall into place.

A lot will depend on retirements and FA.

Do the McCourty brothers stay? Chung? Gronk? Our secondary is strong but if Chung and DMAC/JMAC retire, the secondary will need to be rebuilt and takes a lot of time to gel. Gronk is irreplacable.

Is Flowers re-signed? Trent Brown?

If the McCourty twins return, the secondary enters next season as the best in the NFL. Jonathan Jones (RFA) as the 4th CB really shows the talent at DB. He’d be a starter on a lot of teams & played great vs. KC/LAR when his name was called. The rest of the defense can play off them.

Brady/OL + BB/secondary. Looking good.

I think to really compete they'll need to resign Flowers (didn't hear his name much tonight I just realized) and convince Gronk to come back as well as the McCourty twins.

If some of these players that are on the fence do decide to retire, I'm curious what kind of cap space it frees up, and if that makes us bigger players in FA. This is a very casual thought and I haven't done much research into it.

Some obvious losses such as Gronk, Allen, Clayborn, etc. would put us looking at anywhere from 30-40 mill to play with

As hyped as I am about the team lets keep in mind that the offseason is always a reset button. Even if many pieces of next years team will be similar it will be a different team with a new identity.

I can already smell the anger of people next September that will compare the early season product with the defensive perfection we saw just yesterday.

For me, the first key is re-signs

Brown
Flowers
Shelton or Brown
Jason McCourty
Jones
=====
the second is potential retirements

Gronkowksi
McCourty
Hightower
==========
the third is the huge deficiency on the team: receivers
The defense was truly awesome. However, scoring 13 points with only one WR with ANY receptions simply is unlikely to cut it. Only one other WR didn't even got any targets.
======
Free agency will likely we about replacement of players that we didn't re-sign. The only hole to be filled in free agency is at receiver.
=========
BOTTOM LINE
We are really, really solid if we re-sign our free agents and no one retires. Restructuring will likely produce the money to sign a free agent or two at wide receiver. Also, the draft should replenish the DL.

I’m expecting big things from Bentley. A Hightower/Van Noy/Bentley LB trio would be formidable.
I like Bentley. Very good tackler and very good against the run. Not so good against the pass. Hopefully, he improves in that area and replaces at least Roberts, if High doesn't hang them up. I have a feeling we'll lose too much this off-season.
A big time WR is certainly needed. We can't do it again with just Edelman. No chance.
But right now, yeah, I want to enjoy this victory for the rest of the week.

I think Brown ($), Gronk (body), DMac ($)are gone. I think it's very possible Chung, Slater, and JMac are as well.

Changes are coming - as always - but hopefully Wynn and Bentley are up the challenge. NE also has a good draft situation...

As others have said, potential retirements loom as least as large as free agency. Assuming Gronk retires but Hightower and the Brothers McCourty return and they re-sign Flowers, that leaves gaping holes at WR, TE and DT, and a clear need for a developmental QB. That's significant, but doable.
