Free Agent Targets 2019

Grady Jarrett at DT would be a big get. Especially if we lost Flowers.

Brown (can probably retain for ~$3m):
... 524 snaps/yr .. 46.5tkl/yr .. 3.5 TFL/yr .. 2.1 sks/yr .. 4 QBH/yr

Jarrett (probably gets ~$10m on next contract):
... 600 snaps/yr .. 44.8 tkl/yr .. 7.8 TFL/yt .. 3.5 sks/yr .. 10 QBH/yr

Lawrence Guy has played very well. When you point to him as your team’s number one DT moving forward, you probably have a decent sized hole that needs to be addressed.

Free agency hasn’t really cut it. Fanane, Knighton, Shelton, etc—all let downs. Even Branch turned into a letdown. I think they need to find at least one blue chip prospect in the early rounds of the draft, and I think this team and coaching staff have proven how much bigger a priority the trenches are versus the plug and play misfits at WR that Brady has worked with over the years (probably including the current one).

That’s not to say that a WR shouldn’t be taken with a high draft pick again because they definitely should, but I don’t think it’s a bigger priority than fixing the issues on the DL. Luckily, priorities don’t matter as much once BPA takes over, so you could be right that a receiver will be addressed first if the right guy is there.

Branch was a good value for his first two-and-a-half seasons with the Pats (total cost through 2016 = $5.4m).

Guy was the most productive DT, statistically, but he and Brown were the primary tandem, averaging roughly the same snap% per game this year (~50%). Butler ended up averaging about the same snap%/game as Shelton (~36%).

Currently for 2019 at DT:
- Guy (29), 1100 Pats snaps .. signed thru 2020
- Butler (25), 850 Pats snaps .. signed thru 2019
- Parry (27), 2 yrs starting NT for IND .. signed thru 2019 (futures contract)
- Herron (24), 1 yr Pats PS .. (PS, likely futures contract)

- Brown (25), 2100 Pats snaps .. UFA
- Shelton (26), 324 Pats snaps .. UFA

At this point, I'm guessing that Brown might be retained for $2.5m-$3.0m AAV, with a relatively small signing bonus.

The Pats probably end up with four DTs on the final 53. If they re-sign Brown, they'll have three, plus a couple candidates under contract. So, yeah, this would be a good draft for them to try to snag a promising rookie prospect, but I don't think they'll need to sell out to get one.

TE for 2019 (in descending order of experience):
- Gronk (30) .. thru 2019
- Allen (29) .. thru 2019
- Anderson (25) - some NFL experience .. thru 2019 (ERFA)
- Hollister (25) - less than 150 offensive snaps, on IR .. thru 2019
- Izzo (23) - no NFL experience, on IR .. thru 2021

If Gronk retires, and Allen is cut (rather than restructured/extended), the cupboard is pretty close to bare, and the Pats will likely need 3 total for the final 53.

WR for 2019:

- Edelman (33) .. thru 2019
- Darren Andrews (24) .. thru 2020, on IR
- Berrios (24) .. thru 2021, on IR
- Cody Hollister (25) .. 2018 ERFA, on IR
- Damoun Patterson (24) .. (PS, likely futures contract)

- Hogan (31), 3 yrs Pats exerience .. UFA
- Dorsett (26), 2 yrs Pats experience .. UFA
- C. Patterson (28), 1 yr Pats experience .. UFA

The Pats will likely need 5 total for the final 53, and the cupboard looks pretty bare here, also.

I think that the Pats pretty much always take BPA, regardless of position or spot in the draft (with some 2nd-round risk/reward picks). I don't think that "need" elevates WR/TE above DT, but the "need" for WR/TE does seem greater to me at the moment (and may look completely different after Free Agency).

I also don't think that BB is particularly impressed with TEs who can catch but not block, and TEs who can block, but who haven't been top-end receivers in college, are usually available later in the draft.

Taking a WR with a high pick seems unlikely, for reasons that have been "discussed" ad nauseum, but I really don't yet know much about the WR prospects available in this draft, so I'm going with "never say never" for now.

Without question. Outside of the Ravens, the Patriots are probably the team the Steelers would be least likely to trade with.

Sure, but that would bring up at least two "why" questions.

  1. Why trade away receivers of value when you've just stacked the group?
  2. Why risk pissing off the Steelers, and worrying other teams as to your trustworthiness, since that could hamper future dealings?

The Steelers have a right to be salty if AB got flipped to us. They have no gripe about how a team manages it’s roster/cap space. The team acquiring AB might want to recoup lost draft picks and create some cap space.

I’d like us to keep Dorsett and Patterson.

Dorsett is a very solid #3 guy for us. Brady trusts him and you can see it with the throws he gets. He’s also improved throughout his time here so would like to kee him.

Patterson is a weapon. If we can keep him for a reasonable rate it would be another good one. He’s electric whenever he has the ball and on WR screens for short yards he’s almost unstoppable.

Trey Flowers - id be fine with given him 12-15m a season. With the cap going up he will look fairly cheap within a season or two.

DT - Id like to keep Guy. Brown I would also, but that depends on the money side. Think this will be addressed through the draft or FA.

These guys I’d be interested in deals if the money makes sense along with the length of contracts.

Suh - 32
Sheldon Richardson - 28
Kearse - 28
Adam Humphries - 25
CJ Moseley - 26
Landon Collins - 25
Dante Flower Jr - 24

There’s obviously other guys out there but these are the ones I’d like us to look at if the money makes sense.

I’d love to see Suh he would give us something we haven’t had for years, that Rodney Harrison type of guy, but he’s definitely a 1 year deal.

Sheldon Richardson - can play all over the line. Would be a nice compliment to Flowers but can’t see the money working but would still be interested.

Landon Collins - Safety will be a growing concern for next season as Chung/D-MAC are getting up there. Would be nice to have a player like Collins come in and solidify that area for the next 5 years.

Lawrence Guy isn't a Free Agent who is inexpensive. Not sure why you have him as a "player you'd like to keep".

Dante Flowers on a prove it deal, otherwise, no way. Kid failed in Jacksonville and couldn't do squat with the Rams despite all that talent around him.

Moseley and Collins are going to be too expensive with the Franchise Tag likely.

Humphries or Jamison Crowder are the only UFA WR I'm interested in. Kearse will be 29 in February. Rather go with younger players..

Markus Gordon - 4-3 DE who has gone under the radar.

Margus Hunt - I liked what I saw from him when we played the Colts.

For DT - The good news for the Patriots is that David Irving and Grady Jarrett are UFA and will probably be Franchised by the Cowboys and Falcons respectively. That should help them either re-sign Malcolm Brown or look at someone else for a relatively inexpensive price. However, I fully expect a one or two DTs in the first 6 picks of the Patriots.

Last yr there were only two teams with 50+ million cap space and one with 40+m. This year 11 teams with 50+m and three teams with 40+m. Four teams have more than 80 million cap space. We should see some really stupid money and outrageous spending this summer.

Think this off season is going to be exciting again. We have lots of draft picks, basically the whole of the 2018 draft class coming back.

Plus with a couple of restructures we could have some nice cap space to play with.

Exciting times ahead!

Was going to post this

Hey, this could be a nice signing. Still a very good player and on the back-end of his career, could be looking for a contender

Sign the Beast!
Could be a great signing for us. Still some gas in the tank and a versatile athletic lineman. Also a great guy off the field as he did a lot of charity work down in Tampa when I lived there.

Gerald McCoy?

On the one hand, the Bucs gain a lot of cap space over the next three season by cutting him ($13m, $12.5m, $12.9m), with no dead money. OTC has TBY with only $16m in starting cap space for 2019, with a significant number of in-house UFAs to possibly be re-signed (including WR Adam Humphries).

OTOH, in spite of missing two games in 2018 to a calf injury, McCoy was still their #1 DT in terms of snap counts (and by a large margin). And there may be better ways for them to increase cap space by cutting other players (e.g., DeSean Jackson - $10m).

If you're getting comp picks year after year, you're not focusing on bringing back your own players. You're letting them go. It's pretty much inherent in how the comp system works.

It also means you drafted or traded well because other teams want to sign your players .

This offseason will be a success if they retain Flowers. His versatility & production make him a perfect fit for the Pats D. IMHO, Flowers & McGinist are the best D-lineman of the BB era. I think he'd be well worth the $18M that it would take to franchise him.

Depends what we do with Allen, Hightower, Gronk, etc, we could have a ton of cap space .

at 7M, hightower is going to be hard to replace.....Allen, Gronk, Clayborn, MBrown, Shelton,Burkhead,DMccourty.....all need to either give up some money or disappear

1st Priority is to extend Trent Brown
2nd Priority is to extend Trey Flowers

McCoy performed very well in 2012 and 2013 under Greg Schiano, but he sounded awfully bitter when Schiano later said his Ohio State defensive line was more talented than what he had in Tampa Bay. Something to keep in mind as we wait to see who gets hired for which roles on defense.

  • D. McCourty -- $13.3Mil cap hit. Restructure or cut ($4mil of dead money)
  • Gronk -- $11.9mil cap hit. Restructure or cut ($2mil of dead money)
  • Hightower -- $10.9mil cap hit. Restructure or cut ($5mil of dead money
  • D. Allen - $7.4Mil cap hit. Cut ($0 dead money)
Those four alone total $43.5mil in cap space and only $11mil in dead money. The Pats CAN have a ton of space if they want it.

Hightower was freakin awesome on Sunday. Good luck replacing him. I think McCourty might restructure if we can work something out with his brother.

I'm guessing Gronk retires and we just cut/release Allen. Can tweak other spots to. Clayborn? Ebner? M. Cannon trade bait if we keep Brown? Of course, extend TB 12 too.

I am just saying the Pats have options.
