AFC vs NFC 2018

I guess it all depends of how the teams are being ranked. The "experts" seem to favor the NFC, especially the NFCE. What I like to do is rank the teams by record first and break ties by using the opponents winning %.

I went straight by current playoff seed standings.

AFC vs NFC

3 Houston vs Bears
4 Steelers vs Cowboys
5 SD vs Seattle
6 Ravens vs Vikings

I would probably take the AFC in all 4 contest. After that I THINK it goes.

NFC 7 Carolina, 8 Philly 9 Washington
AFC 7 Indy, 8 Broncos 9 Titans

I would like the AFC in at least 2 out of 3 of those games on a neutral field. Maybe all 3.

Don't think NE @ Pit is an away game for the AFC as both teams are AFC.

Big Week 15 for Interleague Play

With only 12 inter-league games remaining and the AFC holding a 28-24 edge, this week's 6 games are HUGE.

AFC Home;
Detroit at Buffalo
TB at Baltimore (W)
Wash at Jags (W)
Dallas at Indy

AFC Away;
Titans at Giants (W)
Miami at Minny

I see a 3-3 split but hoping for an AFC sweep.

Well, the AFC had a better week than I thought and are now leading 32-26 with 6 games left, all to be played this week.

Unless the NFC sweeps this week the AFC will win this season's head-to-head battle to go 32-19-2. The AFC is now up 99 games overall.

These are the AFC home games this week;
NYG at Indy
GB at NYJ
Wash at Tenn

These are the away games;
Hou at Philly
KC at Sea
Pitt at NO

Let's go AFC

Non-Division Games:
22-16 - AFC West
20-16 - AFC South
20-18 - AFC North
19-19 - NFC North
19-19 - NFC South
17-19 - NFC East
17-21 - NFC West
16-22 - AFC East

Interesting to note that of the two divisions the last place AFC East played this year (AFC South and NFC North), neither ranks first in non-division play. The AFC West ranks first in part due to a decent non-division record from their worst team (see below). This year the AFCW played the NFCW (a mediocre 15-27 once you get past the Rams) and the AFC North.

Teams with the best delta between intra-division and inter-division games, aka 'benefitting from playing in a weak division' logic:
Dolphins: 4-1 in AFCE, 2-6 vs rest of NFL
Cowboys: 4-1 in NFCE, 4-5 vs rest of NFL
Steelers: 3-1-1 in AFCN, 5-4 vs rest of NFL
Eagles: 3-2 in NFCE, 4-5 vs rest of NFL

Conversely, teams that performed best outside their division:
Chargers: 3-2 in AFCW, 8-1 vs rest of NFL
Texans: 3-2 in AFCS, 7-2 vs rest of NFL
Seahawks: 2-3 in NFCW, 6-3 vs rest of NFL
Raiders: 0-4 in AFCW, 3-7 vs rest of NFL

Thanks for the info.

The AFC rules the NYFL once again.

The final results are in and once again the AFC has won the head to head match-up vs the NFC, this time by a score of 34-30. That also gives the AFC a big lead in total seasons won at 32-19-2.

You'd never know this if you looked at the power rankings of the NYFL because the rankings are slanted heavily to the NFC. What I did was take the power rankings from 7 different sources, took out the high and the low and then added them up and ranked them by the total. That gave me one set of rankings.

Then I made my own set of rankings by taking the record of each team and listing them 1-32 and breaking the ties by using the opponents winning % for each team. I think that's the fairest and most accurate ranking. As Tuna Crap used to say, you are what you're record says you are. It's one of the few things I agree with him about.

When I compared those two sets of rankings I noticed that the AFC was ranked much worse in my PR than the others. I'll have more later when I finish.

Final 2018 Cumulative Division Standings:
23-17 - AFC South
22-18 - AFC West
21-19 - AFC North
21-19 - NFC North
20-20 - NFC South
19-21 - NFC East
18-22 - NFC West
16-24 - AFC East

Note: these are the combined record of each divisions four teams in games played outside their respective divisions. When comparing one division to another there is no point in including division games, as they will always be .500 (10-10, or 9-9-2 if there is a tie).

AFC South overtook the AFC West in the final week of inter-division play to finish with top honors for the 2018 season. AFC East down thanks to the Pats having a bit of an off year (6-4 with two surprise losses) and this year's 2nd place team not performing well at all outside the AFCE (Miami, 3-7).

The total is 82-78 AFC

What I noticed looking at the rankings and the individual teams is that the national media is in love with the Giants who are 6 places better than they should be (4 AFC teams out of the 6), Falcons and 49ers 4 places (both ahead of 3 AFC teams with better records or the same record and tougher schedules).

Then there's Da Bears, who in spite of the terrible record of their opponents ( 94-128-3) and the fact that they only played 4 teams with a winning record and all of them at home, is ranked 3rd, ahead of both KC and LAC, who have played much tougher schedules.

The only AFC team that gets that kind of treatment is the Indiots, who are ranked 8th, 4 spots better than they should be.

Overall, the NFC is ranked a total of 22 spots better than they should be and the AFC 20 spots worse.

I wonder what gives.

It's important to consider how the playoff teams did cross conference.

KC 2-2
NE 3-1
Hou 2-2
Balt 2-2
LAC 3-1
Indy 3-1, Tenn 4-0, Pitt 3-1

NO 4-0
LAR 4-0
Chi 2-2
Dal 1-3
Sea 2-2
Minn 2-2, Philly 3-1

We don't know who's in but assuming things stay as they are

AFC: 15-9
NFC: 15-9

NFC a bit more top heavy containing the two teams who should be the SB favorites.
