Funny 2018 offensive fact

Imagine burning a first overall pick on Jameis Winston and then having him suck worse than Ryan Fitzpatrick even though he's in his 4th season in an offense with talent at the skill positions. Guy struggles reading defenses. I took some heat for saying that in the draft forum when he came out of FSU.

Fitzpatrick has been playing like an all-pro, while Winston has been playing like a rookie, statistically speaking. Tampa's defense sucks, though. Pass-D is at the bottom of the league in most categories.

Both QBs have issues with impulse control. They refuse to acknowledge that limitations actually exist for them. It's Brett Favre disease (though Brett Favre disease wasn't nearly as much of a problem back in the old days, when downfield throwing was king anyway), but neither QB is Favre-like in his ability to overcome the mistakes.

It's too bad, too, because I think Winston could have a good starting QB if he'd gotten coached up by people who would have been better offensive coaches for his skill/mind sets.

That might have had to happen for him back at Florida State for it to make much of a difference. I think Jimbo is about as overrated a "quarterback whisperer" as it gets. I will give him props that he's a good offensive mind and obviously a talented recruiter, but the only time you see him working hands-on with his QBs is when he's berating them on the sidelines.

Even worse; his decision making skills (in general) SUCK.

There was no doubt to me that Mariota was the better QB coming out of college. Still is true. But it’s sad that neither QB had good coaching coming out of college.

Kinda puts the success of KC and LA in perspective.

There is still much doubt.

I thought that was the reason why Lovie Smith was fired and Dirk Koetter promoted?

Here’s a more ridiculous one: Eli Manning is close to a 70% completion rate and one of the best passer ratings of his career, despite being an absolutely wretched quarterback.

Winston and Koetter got along well, and management didn't want to lose Koetter as a result, and Winston's numbers had been on an improving trend until this year, so some of the hue and cry is just a by product of recency bias. But Winston's always had a penchant for cutting loose his inner Favre, and I think he'd have been better served under the sort of hard coaching that Brady's gotten.

Fitzpatrick could still be on pace to have a 4500 yard season o_O

Fun fact - Jameis Winston has the highest NCAA crab legs per carry.

Update after 10 games.

Fitzpatrick/Winston are on pace for 5993 yards. Fitzpatrick has been benched for the 2nd time.

If Fitz/Winston combine to throw for more that Peyton does his record get an asterisk?
