Glazer: Pats Interested in Trading For “Premium” WR

Who in the world qualifies as a premium WR if not Brandin Cooks, and we just let him go

Note, I'm not saying he's the best WR in football or anything, but not many teams would be willing to part with someone of that caliber, and not many players of that caliber are going to come in and play at a price the Pats deemed too much for him

Which teams would consider cashing out and are out of the post season?

Bills
Cards
Raiders
Browns have no WRs
Giants. Bieber comes along with the OB. Drama queens.

The Jaguars have a toxic situation. They'll be unloading some of their bad apples. Donte Moncrief is an interesting big wideout.

He will only count for something like 774K this year.

His contract isn’t that bad either for the next 5 years for a true #1 WR

If traded the Giants are on the hook for all the guaranteed money.

Can’t dispute the personality.

It’s evident the guy loves football and that’s right up the Pats ally.
It’s a very, very, very interesting situation. It seems ludicrous at first, but when you consider everything, it almost makes sense.

1. The guy is an incredible talent that would, IMO, almost certainly excel on the team.

2. He has a “huge contract” but much of that is tied into money the Giants have already paid him. He’s practically free this year and as far as I understand it, would have no guaranteed money against the Pats, so if he doesn’t work out or starts to cause issues down the line they can simply cut bait (or probably trade him again).

3. Given the above, you’d almost never think a team would trade a player with a contract like that; however it’s a unique situation where the Giants are a dumpster fire and they are in “we have to do something drastic” mode and may think dumping Odell calms the fires or something. They can probably get a first from the Pats for him and use it to start rebuilding.

4. Is he worth a first to the Pats? I think yes. He’s an elite talent under team control for many more seasons, in his athletic prime, with no guaranteed money, on an expensive but not too expensive contract once you take out the dead money from the Giants. He would be a huge asset to the team, he loves football, and they’ve shown they can integrate guys like him and help them flourish. He could be a team leader here for all I know. He’s passionate and needs someone who can channel that passion. NY sure isn’t doing that for him.

I’m not totally sure how I feel about it, but it’s quite a unique situation.

OBJ is vastly superior to Cooks if his head is on right. He’s so much more versatile.

I didn't read the whole thread yet, but is this a trade that's actually possible? Or just fantasy land wishful thinking that the Pats could somehow land one of the best WRs in the game

It’s a real rumor for whatever that’s worth.

Beckham's a special player. I'm a lot less concerned with his acting out here; he's a dumb baby but who cares? Notable is that Edelman is aging and there's no heir apparent in the slot, and that's arguably the most important role in the offense. Beckham can play inside and out. An offense with Brady, Gronk, Beckham, Edelman, and Gordon is probably the most talented offense in league history.

Glazer says they are interested in a top receiver and OBJ is one of the few that is on the trading block. Giants ownership is sick of him.

I think at some point soon Gronk is going to decide enough is enough and retire. I am guessing after his current contract runs out.

Although the ending to the 2018 season has yet to be written, and the 2019 season is still unforeseeable, if Gronk ends his NFL career when his contract runs out, he will have played for exactly a decade. In that 10 years, he's already ...

- been to 7 AFCCG
- been to 4 SB (and received two rings)
- gotten into the Pro-Bowl five times and been selected to 1st Team All-Pro four times
- ended three seasons as the Pats leading receiver
- made it into the Top-10 in TE career receiving yards
- made it into the Top-5 in TE career TDs
- been #1 in yds/game and in yds/tgt (career)

He still has a season and a half before his contract runs out to add to that.

we just let him go
??

The Pats traded Cooks for more in draft pick value than they spent on acquiring him in the first place. It's not as if they let him walk as a UFA for a future 3rd-round comp pick.

i would love to pick up both a WR and a LB or DL. i just dont know how we can add a premium or multiple premium players with the cap space we currently have. i suppose we can maneuver with extensions and stuff, but thats not the usual mo here

What I meant is we just had a pretty good WR. Seems odd we'd be in the hunt for one after just parting ways with one. I wasn't critiquing the trade.

Cooks tried to score a touchdown on every play. This hurt them twice in the Super Bowl, a game in which he was absolutely a net negative to the Patriots' offense. The first was the failed third down conversion on the jet sweep early in the Super Bowl that should have been easy, all because he tried some obscene leap over a defender to go into the end zone rather than just beating him to the sideline for the one yard they needed despite being possibly the fastest player in the NFL (compare that to Patterson, who would have gotten that easy). The second was him catching the ball downfield and running backwards to elude a defender to try to score, only to be caught up with and knocked out cold by a defensive back coming up behind him. He didn't play again, and the offense was no worse for his absence. This happened again and again throughout the season.

I liked Cooks but he's not among the truly elite receivers in the NFL, and he was inevitably going to be paid like one. There was just enough wrong with him that the idea of paying him the fifth most of any receiver in the league was a pretty unappealing one. His average salary per year is the same as DeAndre Hopkins, and just $1.8m below Beckham's. (If Beckham came to the Patriots, his salary would be substantially lower than Cooks' because of how much of that contract was paid up front by the Giants).

Watch Josh Gordon play. He's not even in perfect shape right now, but he's special. You can tell; it's the body control, the hands, his moves after the catch, the little things he does running routes off the line of scrimmage to beat corners. I never got that vibe from Cooks. Good, yes. Fast, yes. Special? No. Average body control, boneheaded drops, could get jammed by a good press corner, surprisingly average after the catch. Plenty of wide receivers like that. Cooks is one of the best of that group, but I don't want to pay him like he's special.

Still, IF the Pats do trade for a "premium WR" (tomorrow), the draft-pick cost and cap hit will be far, far lower than what it would've cost to retain Cooks.

IOW, they're not getting OBJ.

DeSean is not worth a 1st round pick at this stage in his career.

I never said he was. Actually, I've said in this thread that I don't even endorse the idea.

And set the single-season record for receiving TDs by a TE.

"Premium" just another marketing gimmick. I'm sure the receivers the Patriots are looking at or may wind up with are the equivalent of the McDonald's Premium line. Rather than, you know, actually premium.....

As the saying went in my old neighborhood, "Premium is in the eye of the buttholder."
