Post Game Thread- Pats beat the Bears

Ok, so our defense isn't the 85 Bears. With our offense they are adequate enough and make some great plays. This game they had everyone covered numerous times forcing the QB to run for most of their yardage. That is not a good situation for the Bears offense and they lost. Thanks Pats for another entertaining game and a win to boot! I remember in 07 the blowouts were actually getting boring.

This entire play is not even random but totally on Clayborn not containing. There is nowhere the QB can go and it is not like sacking him there would take the Bears out of FG range. This is just very bad decision making.

And it was not the only time he lost contain today.
What is your opinion as to how he’s doing, so far? He received 6m dollars this year to play a specific role, and I just don’t think he’s proving his value. As we know, there’s still more than half the season remaining, so maybe he can turn things around. Someone had mentioned that he’s leading the team in QB pressures, although I don’t know if that’s true or not. Even if it is, I think he’s shown that he’s kind of freelancing a bit by either sucking at, or ignoring some other assignments in an attempt to chase the QB.

Pretty sure that Chris Long had something like 6 sacks, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble, 3 PBUs, and 35 total tackles. Through the first 6 games, Clayborn had a whopping 3 tackles, zero sacks, no other noteworthy stats, and a good handful of negative plays. We’re all hoping that he can turn it up as the season progresses.

Why do folks have to be such tools when a dissenting opinion is offered? Is it because they feel threatened when someone disagrees with their opinion? I don't get it; there's no need to take things so personally.

I simply disagreed with you in as respectful and impersonal a way as possible and then you say the above, completely unprovoked.

We can have a respectful discussion and disagree with the content of our discussion without resorting to senseless, confrontational ad hominems and irrelevant, snarky quips.
I was thinking the same thing during the game, yesterday. I am baffled as to how the same handful of people get free passes to be rude, sarcastic ****s all the time. There used to be a time when you could have respectful debates about two different opinions, with the understanding that we were all part of the same “team” and rooting for the same outcome.

Now, there are a handful of posters who absolutely refuse to acknowledge any deficiencies or weaknesses, and they do it in a way that’s often sarcastic, condescending, and suggestive that their opinion is somehow better. Unfortunately, there are actual *real* chicken littles who seem to get off on trolling and could actually warrant some of these comments, but it’s a damn shame that certain people still can’t tell them apart from those who often have plenty of positives to add on a daily basis. Some of us want to be able to have reasonable discussions about both the good and the areas that may need improvement, and the same 3-4 people are constantly interjecting with their rude posts that attempt to belittle anyone with an opposing viewpoint.

Special Teams accounted for 2 TDs today. 1 on the Kick Return and 1 on the blocked punt. So the offense only put up 24.
And because of blocked punt and KR td they had 2 fewer possessions .Also after the Pats scored last TD they basically were running out the clock , if they needed to could have scored .

I thought the D played poorly again...shocker. That said it could have looked worse. Trubitsky absolutely shat the bed. He missed opportunities and underthrew receivers who could have really made us pay.

We caught some breaks, a better QB would have made us pay dearly.

We got a lot of work to do with this defense. Very sloppy.

Why do they keep putting Rowe on the field?

Pleas trade for Patrick Peterson.

watching bad defenses is just not enjoyable. As a diehard fan, it pains me to say I'm quickly losing interest.
The good news is that we’ve seen similar defensively weakened Pats teams that have gone on to compete at some pretty high levels recently, so that’s something to keep in mind. The 2011 SB defense is an example, as are a couple of other years since then. Slow and steady improvement in the colder months has often been the norm.

The frustrating part is that it seems like some of the weaknesses from last year have either stayed the same or possibly even regressed a bit, so we all hope things improve on that side of the ball. The good news, aside from the injuries of course, is that the offense seems to be hitting its stride, nicely. The continuation of a running game will likely be key if that is to remain moving forward.

To me this looks like Pats D was the most consistent unit of the complementary football making up for ST and O blunders as well as they could under circumstances.

This game was a repeat of the KC game last week including what now seems to be a weekly boneheaded Brady mistake that results in a turnover.

This time it was yet another bad decision. You are up multiple scores with about 7 minutes left. Just throw the ball in the ground or into the sideline and move on and don't go to your FB in the flat with a pass that just invites trouble. At least make it a laser or aim it at foot height so at worst it is an incompletion. And if you can't because the pass rush is closing in.. maybe that is a sign that you should not try in this situation.

I think he has been decent as a player that gets pressure. Yesterday he was just flat awful in terms of containment. If he sticks to the script and is more situationally aware this game is over by halftime.

If he can put it all together he is a net plus even at 6m. If he can't he might end up losing playing time and become a Chris Long-like third down rusher which -- ironically -- might help his stats but ultimately will make us a weaker defense. However you just can't gift opponents drive extension or 4 point plays like he did yesterday.

I feel like in the NFL nowadays the main ways to get stops are turnovers, great pass rush and dropped passes . Oh yea and penalties .
Trib wasn't accurate but more then made up for that with his running . Bears longest drive before garbage time(after 14 point lead ) was 58 yds, 39 of which was 39 yard scramble .
My "homer" problems with d was Burton wide open, and Tribs running .
ps is it me or is Jason Mccourty good? My only evidence is hardly ever hear his name when a pass is completed .

He was rotating with JC Jackson yesterday. So part of the reason you didn't hear his name was him not being on the field at times. That being said I think he has been at least solid (if not good) as CB2.

I would have liked to see them just keep it on the ground in that specific situation.

I’d like to see a replay on that int. It looked like the ball hit him in the hands too and then it popped out. Defender broke on that ball faster than Brady anticipated and ball bounce perfectly to his teammate.

I really feel different about the defense than in 2011. Our ST and offense in 2018 are putting way more stress on the unit than their 2011 counter parts had. There are too many short fields thanks to turnovers and blown ST plays.

Hell there was a sequence yesterday where they defended an entire drive, Patterson fumbles on the kickoff and they are back on the field within seconds, defend another series, Michel fumbles within a few plays, they are back on the field, Patterson scores on a kickoff and they are back on the field again.

I think there is a lot of truth to what Lombardi is saying that to play good complementary football your offense need to be able to control the time of possession and limit your defense to below 26 minutes of play. The exact amount being 26 minutes is random and I don't really care about the exact numbers but the overall concept certainly rings true.

And that is what sucks most about yesterday. With Michel we were in a position to be just that. If he is out for the season we will revert back to an offense who needs to use the (short) passing game as an extension of the run game and this just has a lower probability to be sustainable than the rungame.

Yes it did hit Develin in the hands but that is not the point. Situationally you don't want to lob it to your FB like that. A conversion here doesn't change much about your win probabilities but a turnover does. That pass needs to be aimed low or at the very least come with a lot more pop.

Again you are up two scores with about 7 minutes on the clock. This is not a must have conversion by any stretch.

Goes counter to what some were saying about BB not being happy with the various units.

My feeling at the time was that Tommy just didn't want to go 3&out at that point . that starting the drive at such great field position (that almost guaranteed a FG) he might've felt it is the O turn to put the game away and not put the D back on the field immediately again.

On re-watch it was really a well designed play that left Jules and Dev 2 on 1 . Brady first had a long look at Gordon (double-teamed) which could be for misdirection purposes, then went to Jules (who the play was probably designed for) who was open but the throw would be risky having to go through D hands and by the time he went to what seemed like a wide open Develin on a hurried look the pressure got to him and the throw ended up being a ballon . Develin could've been more aware as well and attack the weak throw despite losing 1st down but he is not often in this situations to instinctively know what to do.

Most of all it was a great play by Amos who was left 1 on 2 . but i guess other teams/players dont count here..

Of course playing the clock there is the way to go and Id guess this one will bi filed away as well as last weeks Houdini act..

Well, to be fair, if that's a standard "deal" he has with the players (win and you get Monday off), it's probably short sighted to cancel it just because things were sloppier than you'd like. I'm sure he's still got a lot to rip them for in the film room, but let them get a mental breather first.

General game thoughts:

- Trubisky isn't good by any definition, but he had 9 TD's over the last two games. So it's not like you roll out of bed and stop him in today's NFL. His running was an issue, but I was encouraged by the pass defense overall.

- Good to see Hogan get involved in the offense, even with Gronk out. Helps to have Edelman and Gordon drawing attention, but we'll need Hogan engaged if we've lost Michel. Short to intermediate passing is going to be become extremely important.

- We didn't have our best offensive weapon, turned the ball over three times (including two that bounced perfectly into defender's hands... like, Patterson needs to take care of the ball, but how many times do you see a fumble like that just fly out of bounds that close to the sideline?), lost our best running RB early on, and apparently forgot how to contain a running QB. All this against a good team on the road, and we won. I'll take that. A LOT of the sloppiness can be cleaned up, and I feel like when we execute we can beat anyone.

- Gordon is doing well, but there still seem to be some misses where he and Brady are on different pages. Nothing egregious, just little errors. Should get better, but he's not there yet, IMO.

J.McCourty has been solid. His worst plays, for some reason, seem to be blown coverages with his brother. Otherwise, he’s added a stable force to the secondary. He’s been much better than training camp suggested he would be

Clayborn has been dreadful. He’s gotten some pressures but he loses the edge and containment every time he gets near the QB. He goes past the QB way too often and is a negative in the run game (as advertised). I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone before next season starts. He’s a complete waste of 6M. One sack in 7 games, only a few key pressures and a ton of yards allowed on runs and scrambles. The total lack of talent up front other than Flowers necessitates Clayborn playing but he’s a negative value player on the field.

I hope that’s the case but he generally hasn’t looked anywhere near as fast as he used to be after getting the ball in his hands this year.

Many players don't look fast when they run but Gordon looked fast on the long play that nearly got him the TD. On that play and one earlier in the game he stayed on the ground a little longer and had the look of a man that was simply tired. He hasn't been playing much football the last few years and could be out of NYFL shape.

Bungle in the jungle.

KC getting away with a lot of flags.

This league has really screwed the pooch on these penalties.

The inconsistencies are worse than ever.
What a mess.

Baltimore has perfected the arm grab and get away with it consistently. Yesterday vs the Saints was no different but they lost anyway.
