When available and healthy, Gordon >>>>>> Cooks

The crazy thing is that Gordon is just going to get better as the season goes on. He and Brady are still a little off but they're getting closer and closer every week to putting it together.

How many snaps did Dorsett get last night?? I saw a lot of Gordon and Hogan but no Dorsett.

68 total
Edelman 71
Gordon 63
Hogan 47
Patterson 6
Dorsett. 3
Slater. 1

Also Allen had 11 and hollister 3

The quick inside slant is not defendable unless you specifically position your LBs according to it. But then you create gaps somewhere else. And lets not even start on that double move that is just a question of time where its not a slant but a sluggo.

I can't wait to see the offense fire on all cylinders after the BYE.

Brady clearly loves Gordon.
I was skeptical and I’m still worried he could flake, but I’m not as concerned that the almost 4 year absence from football cannot be overcome.
He still has some work to do, but I can easily see Gordon putting up 600-700 yards and 6-7 Tds. over games 9-16.

And Edelman will continue to round back into health. If they all stay healthy, this offense should be lights out late in the year.

I don't know who can defend this offense if everyone stays/gets healthy and Gordon truly figures the route running stuff out. It could be a SB for the ages against the McVay Rams.

Gordon has to be accounted for, and right now that's his biggest value to the Pats. He draws defenders and opens up the field for everyone else. Same goes for Gronk. With those two on the field, we'll have something given to us 95% of the time.

Nothing wrong with taking refuge in an organization that you know will look after you and will NEVER throw you under the bus. It's actually beneficial when you feel like someone is looking after you, unlike in Cleveland which was anything but a stable environment.

Agreed. Maybe it is a difference in wording. Feeling "looked after" and supported in great, but taking refuge in that is not great. He has to stand on his own while being in a supportive environment or he will return to his struggles. Maybe that is more clear. The Pats versus the Browns may be positive, but a secondary consideration. Every little bit helps though.

Good post, exactly my thoughts. Addiction is really tough, so relapse wouldn’t surprise me with anyone. But I was really skeptical of his athletic skills at this point in his career, which is why I figured no one offered more than a sixth round pick. Consider me floored.

For the record, I really enjoyed having Cooks on the team last year. It's hard not to appreciate someone coming into this offense his first year and put up 1000+ receiving yards.

He was outright unguardable on comeback routes, and he can pick up yards in a hurry. Had a hell of an AFC title game too against arguably the best secondary in the NFL. Really just a shame he got floored by Jenkins.

I think I hated the way Josh used him, particularly in the red zone, more than anything else. Overall he was definitely an asset, but the Rams are bonkers to give him that much money. He's really only a threat with good pass protection and other really good weapons in the offense. That game at Miami last year really showed that you can't build an offense around Cooks.

Can't disagree there. I also think people forget how light Cooks is despite it being obvious on the field; Jules has about 20 pounds on him and they're the same height.

Sure, if both are healthy and available there isn't a team in the league that would take Cooks over Gordon. ****, if Gordon is healthy and available and good to play, there are only a handful of receivers in the league anyone would take over Gordon. But the 'when available' caveat is WAY bigger for Gordon than Cooks, to where I barely see the point in making comparisons without acknowledging it.

Well I certainly understand Gordon is one of the riskiest players ever, considering his history, and he may very well not be available at any time. But still a sixth round pick for Gordon, a first round pick and $50M guaranteed for Cooks? Wow. Low risk, high reward is a proven winning strategy.

Despite good production, two teams traded Cooks during his relatively favorable rookie contract. Which says something about how essential he felt.

Would've been interesting to have retained Cooks AND still get Gordon.

Was kind of shocked we got back a first rounder for Cooks. I know he signed a huge deal with the Rams immediately afterwards (that may have played a part) but usually you get back a third or fourth for productive receivers on the last year(s) of the deal.
