Last 5 Draft Classes

The only changes I would make is putting Jimmy G. and maybe Brissett in green. JG is clearly starting caliber and Pats recovered value via trade. Brissett was also traded for Dorsett who is a starting WR.

This doesn't change my overall conclusion that recent drafting has been less than ideal, especially with regard to impact players.

Neither are on the current roster.

Injury issues to players in their rookie seasons definitely impact that but it's not been good. Ultimately, you want to hit on at least a quarter of those picks, if not more. Jury is still very much out on this year's draft class, though. But the injuries/bad luck and misses have definitely hurt this team. I don't think anyone that's not absolutely hammered drunk would argue that (although I can think of a couple that are already on your trail in this thread who will try).
The thing that worries me most about this draft class is that Sony Michel was the player I was most worried about when it came to injuries and he is one of the only healthy players.

For this chart to be completely useful, we need all of the other NFL team's numbers too.

Which franchises are drafting well and which are not? Are most in the middle?

Malcolm Butler- 2014 (Left in free agency; Factor in winning 2 SB)
David Andrews- 2015 (Top Tier C)
Brandon King- 2015 (Good ST player)
Jonathan Jones- 2016 (Solid Nickel/Slot CB)
Jacob Hollister- 2017 (Book is still out)
Adam Butler- 2017 (Solid sub pass rush DT)
JC Jackson- 2018

Comments that are Pro-BB and the draft:
1) Hard to say the Patriots are awful/bad unless you compare to other teams (with some caveats).

2) How many positions are really available for replacements each year? This team, with the exception of the last couple years, is built to provide depth at most positions because BB understands that there will be injuries over the course of a season.

3) I think part of this is BB tends to use draft picks to acquire players too (moreso than other coaches). And those picks tend to go towards (2) starting positions.

Con-BB case, I'll have to give this some more thought (in a meeting)

I mean if you want to list UDFA signings you’d have to list every one that was signed.

I get that. If the discussion is about how good the drafting is, I think you need to include those two.
Why what have we got out of them? A #3-4 WR? If anything including them makes us look worse because we have very little to show for 2 good players.

Red just indicates they are not on the roster.

But if you want to look at Garoppolo he has started and finished 9 games in 5 years, the legend of Jimmy has far exceeded the actuality of Jimmy.

Dorsett is a starting WR because we have nobody else, once Edelman comes back and if Gordon performs to his talent level Dorsett becomes the #4 WR.

JG is still a starter and a franchise QB. Pats got 3 years of insurance for Brady plus got a higher pick back than their original pick. Would you rather have Malcolm Brown or Jimmy G on the team, not considering cap hit?

I said "maybe Brissett" because I think Dorsett could be viewed as either a starter or rotational player. For now, I'm considering him a starter but I can see why you don't include him as one.

Yes, in addition to what you listed, we also got a #3-4 WR and a 2nd round pick back (+3 years of a high quality backup qb). As I mentioned, I think the drafts do not look good even with these added.

So.....the Patriots college scouts can't locate Patriots caliber WRs
And...the Patriots pro scouts can't locate Patriots caliber WRs
Who's left?
Oh yeah....The Cleveland Clinic Rehab Annex scouts

The colors seem to be slanted towards an already formed opinion. All the black should be green and all the trades should be black.

Yeah that’s pretty awful. Can’t wait for the discussion on this.

Get ready for the “we pick late” excuse.
It needs to be part of the analysis. The draft positioning has driven some of the more risky drafting behavior.

The other part of the analysis of the talent level is the team has had two 1st rd picks and a 4th taken away. By not having players under cheaper, rookie deals forces the team to pay for FAs who are more expensive. That impacts the cap and impacts the team's ability to retain/sign players.

There is no question BB has missed on a number picks badly but to say his draft record is awful fail to take the aforementioned challenges into account and neglect to take the time to compare his record with other NFL teams is an incomplete assessment.

The past few drafts have seemed thin on serious football players. Yes, you had a few first round guys who were or are good. Other than a few I don’t see many

2017 Draft
#64 relinquished for the Shell of Kony Ealy
#69....Cooper Kupp....LAR legend in the making

I mean he’s got Malcolm Brown in green. He’s been awful this year and prior years has he been anything special? To me he’s in green due to being a starting DT. Well, michel is alsp a starter going forward with white.

He's a bum. I know he's in the last year of his rookie deal, so it's not a fair question, so let's assume he had 3 years left on his deal at his current level of play. What do you think the Pats could get for him in terms of a draft pick? 6th.. 7th...anything? Not great productivity from a 1st rounder. Can't hold up against the run and can't rush the passer. What does he do well?

If Lions rookie guard Frank Ragnow makes it to the Hall of Fame 20 years from now, no doubt he will show film clips of his 3rd game in the NFL....tossing Malcom Brown around like a beanbag
