Figured it might be beneficial to put together some of the important statistical rankings of the defense that we discuss on here from week to week to gauge how they improve or don't improve throughout the season.

As of Week 4:
  1. Points/Game - T19th
  2. YPG - 28th
  3. 3rd down % - 30th
  4. Net passing yards/attempt - 18th
  5. Net rushing yards/attempt - 25th
  6. TO % - 11th
Average = 20th

Opponent offensive rankings (PPG):
  1. Texans - 23rd
  2. Jaguars - T25th
  3. Lions - 14th
Average = 21st

Thus far, performing below average against below average competition. It should be interesting to see how the expected improvement in the offense improves these stats.

There are a few resident gadflies that continue to beat their drums about how bad the talent level is on the current roster.

The people that in fact are suiting up need to do a better job executing the game plan. (aka blocking and tackling...)

They also need to be able to run faster.

There's definitely a talent question, IMO. The question is whether or not they can get to a level where they're good enough to win a championship if the offense is scoring.

I would love a championship as would jut about everyone that posts here. For now, I would settle for being competitive. By competitive I mean successfully getting off the field when being presented with a 3rd and long. That would be a start.

Yep. So far, they've been the 3rd and 1st defense.

great idea, thanks.

If possible, I think it's always useful to try and capture a snapshot of where the team and its opponent are each week. A lot of times, summaries and compilations of a team's performance end up missing granular details that can provide interesting storylines or point at helpful trends.

I wonder what people on here think of the Vikings defense? They have a ton of talent, but they continue to get shredded against good offenses. This is not really new to me. Zimmer’s D’s get shredded by most elite QB’s/Offenses.

As good as the Rams are, their defense is a huge weakness. Relying on two DT’s to generate consistent pressure is asking a lot. Their LB’s are awful.

Chiefs have Houston and Ford on D. That’s it.

The good news going forward is that most teams have glaring weaknesses. If the Pats can fix the offense, they have a chance.

Rowe with another groin injury, did he have surgery at any time since he came here? Because that seems chronic

Vikings D in full retreat over the last 2 weeks has been one of the major weird results of the season, imo. They've got lots of great name talent and TONS of continuity.

Pats were basically 32nd in every category after September last year. Kontra will update it but look as if most stats are in the 10-14 range after 4 weeks.

I like where we're at in passing yards/attempt although I suppose that will take a hit this week.

Didnt know where to put this link, but it seems appropriate to drop it here:

Should (And Could) Patriots Trade For One Of Cardinals’ Young Linebackers?

I dont see how Reddick could be available, but if he is Id pounce. Was a fanboy of his during the draft.

For the first four games this season, it sorta looked like Reddick might have been on his way out. He'd played a total of 30 snaps (never appeared on the injury report) and hadn't contributed much. I was thinking that he may have been yet another casualty of the off-season switch from James Bettcher's 3-4 to Al Holcombs 4-3.

Then, Riddick played 100% of the D-snaps yesterday and doubled his tackle and sack totals for the season (8 tackles and 1 sack) in the win over SFO.

So, who knows? He's not expensive; his remaining 2018 salary is only about $518k.

The numbers are showing progress

They are where I basically thought they would be... which is middle of the pack. If the offense is a juggernaut, that should *hopefully* be good enough.
