Thursday Night Football: Vikings vs Rams

Devin McCourty's cap hit this year is roughly $12 million. I would rather have Cooks. At this point in McCourty's career he's utterly replaceable.
I agree that McCourty is a bit overpaid, however, Cooks is not atop the list in terms of who I'd want to see that money reallocated towards. (assuming some hypothetical where McCourty was released in the off-season)

Elite deep threat?
No question he has speed but….
Can't beat the press at the LOS
Can't win 50/50 balls ….
Two requirements IMO for #1 WRs….which Cooks is now being paid to be
I suspect it took BB about 11 seconds to agree to trade away Cooks and recoup his #1 from the prior year.
Short Term: Pats take a step backwards by subtracting a very good target
Long Term: Two steps forward….gained cap space to spend + LT control of #1 draft talent
He's definitely an elite deep threat, although not elite #1 WR like you've pointed out. Lacks too many abilities in other areas.

Like the current state of our defense, this post of yours is garbage.

You could’ve sad we shouldn’t have offered McCourty a contract at all but saying I would’ve cut him two years ago? That’s a 16 million dollar cap hit right there.

And again with Chris Hogan? He’s the last year of his 3 year 12 million deal. He earned that deal just off his playoff performances alone.

I'm not considering cap ramifications. I am only talking about overpaid vs. ability. Of course there are ramifications for releasing high paid players in the middle of their contracts. I am saying based purely on ability vs. compensation McCourty is overpaid, and he has been overpaid for a couple of years.

The discussions of somebody becoming overpaid always seem to focus on the younger guys. The McCourty, Hightower, Allen, etc. deals seem to be ignored. We absolutely should have kept Cooks, as we still had him on his rookie deal,.and we could have spent this year working on a new one. Receivers not being able to pick up the system is a constant issue around here, and we finally get one (at 24 yrs old at the time) and we let him walk with nothing there to replace him.

Now they obviously make the right moves at times as well. I think letting Solder walk was the correct move. So was Amendola. Solder will never play up to his contract as he is simply not that good (you could call him the Devin McCourty of LT), and Amendola may this year, but he is definitely on the declining skills side of his career.

A bit overpaid. I'm not going to even look it up, but what do you think his PBU and Int stats look like for the last 2-3 years. McCourty is known for being the guy who shows up to touch a guy after the play is over and he's already had a 9 yrd gain on 3rd and 7. It's painful to watch, especially knowing what he is getting paid.

Remember towards the end of Bledsoe's time with the Pats. He would drop back patting that damn ball, and as soon as pressure got within 5 ft of him, even if they were being blocked, he would turtle up and wait for the sack. Watching McCourty play provides the same feeling I had watching Bledsoe toward the end.

Cooks was a star on National TV last night. Too bad he wilted under the spot light of the biggest game back in February. I had no issue with trading him. This would not be a problem if they had won that damned game. I think this season is going to be a rebuilding year...

If by wilted you mean an eagles player took him out of the game with a targeted shot to his head while he wasn't looking, then yeah, he totally wilted.

How about the play where he tried to hurdle a DB instead of diving for the first down?

I still would have liked to see Cooks in the system another year with Edelman also on the field.

Cooks produced the same yardage for us as Gronkowski did last year. Seems pretty elite to me.

4 WRs last season had more yardage than Gronk did in 2011, the greatest season ever by a TE. The difference between Gronk's 2011 season and the NFL record for receiving yards for one season is over 600 yards.

An elite WR should outproduce Gronk. That's the reality of the two positions.

Can our past success rush the QB, stop the run, block or catch a pass? If not, who cares?

I posted a link depicting a chart with the Rams track record.
Look up the Patriots overall track record for the same time period and get back to us...
