It seems the Pats decided the 53rd roster spot was more valuable as a place hold for the future.

The "future" might be this season, if Darboh is healthy in 8 or 10 weeks.

Agreed - could be. But there are only two DTR slots so is it more likely that two other players familiar with the system are injured, hamstring or something, placed on IR, and after 8 weeks return using the two DTR slots? Just seems unlikely to me that the Pats use one of the two slots on a guy that was not even in training camp.

Bill is playing with fire with the wrs corps. Better stay healthy.
Did I get the dates wrong?

1) Did the trade deadline pass?

2) Were there any WR's available on the waiver line that the team should have signed to be as an active 4th WR? Hogan, Dorsett and Patterson are our WR's for 4 weeks (plus Gronk, White, Hill and Burkhead as receivers). Hill and Develin are also options. In addition, we have Allen and Hollister. If one is injured, Brady will make do with 9 targets for a couple of weeks. I ignore Hansen and whoever is the next tryout.

When has the #4 WR ever caught more than 1 catch per game when we had options at TE and RB?

I was more intrigued with Hansen anyway, especially since his skin tone angers Bomani Jones. Also because his highlight tape looked decent and he's healthy. Plus it's nice to see him doing something useful, all those years after mmmBOP.

I've been involved with high level sporting programs and coaches/administrators for the majority of my life. As much as fans like to think they know a thing or two, the reality is they haven't a clue when compared against industry professionals and the resources available to them.

We may scratch the surface of level 1, these guys and gals are deep into level 300's abyss.

I'm not sure I agree. While the NFL may end up with the cream of the crop, I don't think the crop is that bright. The coaching profession or even personnel profession seems not to draw high-level thinkers. Some of these guys are just true idiots. Like, watch them on Hard Knocks. They're morons, and, worse, they're morons who are coddled by a work environment that rewards their stupidity. It makes sense. A lot of them are former players who just do things in a certain way because that's just the way things are done. Small innovations are hailed as the works of unparalleled genius or else lunacy.

It makes sense. For the vast majority of people involved, sports is a professional field where pay and labor standards are completely deplorable. Even in the NFL, many assistant coaches, scouts, and so on are paid like **** and live ****ty lives. Who would willingly sign up for that? Not very many intelligent people. I find it difficult to believe there aren't a lot of amateurs who could run a team better than many head coaches, scouts, and GMs out there, but they're amateurs because their 9-5 job pays better and lets them live lives that don't suck a lot.

It would seem the intention is for this season, unless something better (er worse) comes along.

It was as if the Patriots wanted someone on IR to bring back, just in case; first Izzo and then turning the spot to Darboh. They appeared uncomfortable with no one.

The heck you talking about? I am saying they’re thin. If one of those top 3 gets injured this team’s in trouble. This team has 2 productive wrs and that’s it! One suspended coming back from acl. They have a bunch of names after that.

I am fine with Hogan, Edelman, Dorsett and Patterson. You aren't. You think that the #3 and #4 WR's are a major part of an offense with Gronk, White, Bulkhead and Hill on the squad. I disagree. I don't expect our #3 WR to average more than one catch per game.

A 4th WR is a luxury needed in case of injury or suspension.

And yes, I'd be fine if Belichick decides to upgrade by trading a 3rd to 5th draft choice for a WR.

BOTTOM LINE
We need 3 WR's plus a backup in case of injury or suspension. I'm fine with our set of 4.

And, just like anyone else in the league, if a key player is injured, we need bring someone up from the Practice Squad, sign someone, or trade for someone. We even have Hansen as an emergency backup for now.

AN ASIDE
I understand why folks think we need 5 WR's that we can count on to be major contributors. I just strongly disagree with that position as long as we have Gronk, White and Burkhead.

Obviously, Darboh would not be at the top of anyone's list - IF there are other IR-worthy injuries that are relatively transient. Even if there aren't the Pats might not use it on Darboh. Just point out that, because of WHEN he was sent to IR, he's eligible.

Too bad they don't have any TEs or RBs in this offense and solely rely on WR.

Well, I can at least respect the honesty.

Let’s see how fine you’re with first 4 games. Dorsett and Patterson likely will be useless but we will see. Hopefully i am wrong in Dorsett.

Well you have to admit that bill loves his white wrs. He wants to field a whole deck of them.

Great, go do it then. After all, it's that easy, right!

Hard Knocks is entertainment it's not a good resource to appraise knowledge and capability. No one worth a damn shows anything on that show.

You keep repeating yourself over and over. You indicate Patterson is just a "name" and will most likely be useless. However, everything he has done has been solid 3rd WR material most of his career. And, he did it with two mediocre QBs in two different years. On top of being the 2nd best return man ever. You would think in a good system with the GOAT he can at least duplicate this - which was far from useless.

Not that I expect anything anyone says to you to change you. Maybe if you researched things more and thought a bit you would not come off like such a stupid crybaby.

It's not the first 4 games you need to be concerned about. They'll be fine w/o Jules for a month

It's when the eventual injury to a top producer or matchup in January that needs the WR3 to make plays is the concern
