He is bigger than Dion however:

Given his speed and athleticism, it’s apparent he has the ability to make a play every time he touches the ball and the Patriots are doing what they can to make that happen. They’ve called his number on wide receiver screens, slants over the middle of the field and also go routes up the sideline. “He’s been good. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Belichick said on a conference call Saturday afternoon. “We’ve had him in a lot of different roles and different responsibilities on offense and in the kicking game. He’s been great.

Sunday 7: Bill Belichick was right about Cordarrelle Patterson

He's a Big Cat.

Lol every year we get someone and we hype him up on this board. I hate to be the party pooper but if this guy eclipses the 300 yards he had last season i would be ecstatic. Maybe we can get that special teams magic.

Patterson is not a UDFA. He does have NFL experience.
He is also not a washed up old timer.

I think there's a chance that Patterson could contribute in a traditional role, once Edelman is back and assuming everyone is healthy. I think Edelman and Gronk pull special assignments from the D, and guys like Hogan, Dorsett, and White (or RB du jour) will get higher consideration. Patterson should get guys further down the depth chart when everyone is available.

Until Edelman comes back though, they'll need to find creative ways to get him the ball in space.

I think Belichick will get more out of him than all the other coaches he played for. And despite having a box of rocks for a brain (direct quote from people here during his draft year), he was able to pick up the offense.

He's not washed up but he's failed to develop as a quality WR under a couple of different coaching staffs. Seems more likely to continue to be a dud as WR while contributing KR and some jet sweeps/end arounds than blossoming into a quality receiver

BINGO & BINGO!

I think he’ll surprise us this year. He has been like a sleeper during these camps. We don’t talk about him much here. They are asking him to do a lot more than he’s ever done and you can see he’s been trying hard. He is big and as fast as anyone we’ve ever had. This may be this best singing of the season.

He has the size. speed, agility, and hands to beat single coverage and make a catch even when "covered".

That's a different skill set than the other WRs, and I think that Bill, Josh, and TB12 will find some way to use it. I'm not predicting greatness, but I predict higher levels of production than he has displayed in the past. A plenty serviceable 3/4 WR.

Talking heads love to say he can't run pass routes.. huh?

Um .. fly patterns , quick screens , slants , whatever . No problemo.

It's called using a player to his strengths. That's a belichick trademark. Also cordy has abilities that don't exist elsewhere on the roster... Slam dunk roster spot and playmaker first 4 games especially. People who say he'll just be a special teams guy are kinda blind ..IMO...

I think when that's brought up, in general it's short hand for, "He can't run the pass routes the Patriots (and Brady) like to use as their bread and butter." Meaning complicated option routes and pre-snap mind-meld level adjustments. He also has a reputation for rounding out his routes, which (in a timing based offense) can mean the difference between a ball between the screws and one that's thrown out in front of him, where Brady expects him to be.

Time will tell how much of that he can incorporate into his game with proper coaching, but it's not just that he can't run routes, it's that he has to run route trees he hasn't been asked to do before, at a level of consistency high enough for Brady to continue to trust him. I'm optimistic, but that's where the concerns come from, if I understand.

Patterson is definitely proving me wrong on one play Friday night his acceleration was unmatched for a Guy his Size. It had me saying that guy has Cat quickness. :D

I'm unclear as to what defines a "quality receiver" and what defines a "dud". I mean, is Patterson a "dud" compared to other #3/#4 WRs on teams that typically use 2WR and 3WR sets for nearly all their offensive snaps?
