John Lynch Asked For Tom Brady In Trade; Bill Belichick Laughed, 'Basically Hung Up' The Phone

On the podcast “Pardon My Take,” Lynch explained how the situation played out with hosts “Big Cat” and “PFT Commenter.”

Lynch: … the Garoppolo thing came out of nowhere.

PFT: Did you ask for Tom Brady?

Lynch: Um, I’m not supposed to talk about that. (Laughs)

BC: You did. You did, and that’s OK. That’s a bold move.

PFT: But I like that. It’s your first year in the league as a general manager – why not just take shots? Worst thing that happens is they say no, right?

Lynch: Yeah, we were calling about Jimmy. And we did have that conversation and got quickly rebuffed. And I figured, what the heck, you gotta take your shot, right? You can’t score if you don’t shoot. So I had to summon up the courage and Bill laughed at me … and basically hung up on me. But hey, I took my shot.

Now essentially confirmed in stone from Lynch himself.

According to Mark leibovitch’s latest book, Brady wouldn’t have minded if he was released. That’s how bad things got.

New book: It 'wouldn't have killed' Tom Brady if Patriots released him over the offseason

It is one thing to say this after going through a rough patch and making it through. It is another to say those words if they become reality and everything you know changes.

I think it worked out best for both sides and am happy he is still here. And quite honestly I rather watch the final chapter of TB in the next 3-4 years than have success with JG for the next 10.

Significant that this was the conversation in the off-season, where BB said "no" to both possible trades. It would be very interesting to know what went down afterwards to make BB change his mind about Garoppolo.

But how can this be?! BB wanted Brady gone! BB wanted to keep Jimmy G and Brady threw a tantrum!

The rumors were silly then and they look even more silly now.

I still think the only thing that went down was the Pats couldn't convince Jimmy G to stay for one more back-up $$ contract, and then they were forced into "get what we can for him before he walks" mode (which, admittedly, BB should have seen coming, but I think he held onto the thought, until the last minute, that he could convince Jimmy G to stay). I think in BB's mind, Jimmy G was Brady's successor, but Brady defied all expectations and has stayed on top. They couldn't pay both big $$, and how could you even think of getting rid of Brady when he remains at the top of his game? The only (unpalatable, but necessary) move was to trade Jimmy G. That's all that happened, no matter what the conspiracy theorists think.

It is a question of value and other people might have other opinions than BB.

Lets say we could have had a first round pick for JG in the summer. Would you value the difference between a first round and second round pick as much as having a potential successor through camp and the first part of the season just in case Brady actually starts to regress / suffers a serious injury ?

Would you keep JG through the season to have insurance to be set if something happens to TB after the trade deadline and give up the difference between a second round pick and a potential late third round comp pick (almost 50 picks difference) AND defer this pick by another year (remember comp picks come an extra year later and hamstring your flexibility with FAs).

Similarly, they knew Brissett was not a potential backup. So who do you get to replace JG ? Can you even afford a quality backup QB in terms of cap space ? Will that QB be able to pick up the offense ?

I understand that people wanted a bigger return on the trade but the situation wasn't particularly straight forward. Everything worked out great in terms of Brady's health and performance but what if Clowney gets about half a second earlier to Brady and breaks his collarbone or gets pushed into his lower leg ? As we have seen with Wynn or Jules last year you can suffer a season ender out of nowhere and then what ?

Felger continuously brings up patriots turning down a first round pick from Cleveland for Jimmy G that turned out to be 4th overall this past year....

Is this a fact?

I don't know. You could be right.

I don't know. You could be right. But I doubt it for two reasons.

First, BB wouldn't even talk. I'd have pitched the price at an immediate one and a conditional one (conditional on the guy being on the new team's roster). Two firsts for a franchise quarterback isn't a great price to pay (ask the Jesters). If Garoppolo washed out (which anyone who had watched his tape against Arizona and Miami would know was unlikely) they'd only have been out a first-rounder. It happens. Anyway, the difference between a first and a second is huge.

Second, this "knowing that Brissett was not a potential backup". Where did that come from? He's done OK in Indiana. I'd take him over Hoyer, no question.

So I still think that, if you were going to move Garoppolo, the time to do it was before the draft. But I could be wrong, of course.

What changed his mind was that times had changed. It was now the trade deadline and when that passed any leverage the Pats had was gone. Jimmy was leaving at the end of the season and BB got what he wanted. A high 2nd round pick and a capable back up QB instead of the nothing he would have gotten if he didn't make the trade. (and lets make not mistake about it, getting Hoyer was part of this deal) Unfortunately the pick dropped about 1o slots, but it was still in the top 3rd of the round

I have no doubt that Jimmy is going to be a fine NFL QB for many years, but certain Pats fans have got to get over it. BB planned it perfectly when he picked JG, and the succession plan was set IF Brady had hit the "cliff" like he was supposed to. But he didn't. Instead of hitting the "cliff" be went on to become the MVP.

JG is going to be a good QB for the Niners, while we poor Pats fans are going to have to settle for only a GREAT QB for the next 2 or 3 years. Oh my, I wonder how we put up with so much agony.

I think it’s false as the Browns were in damage control after the trade went down with the 9ers. They were embarrassed. Then the Mccaron botch?

Curran and Perry reported that JB was on his way to be cut last August. Check one of the QB centric QuickSlants episodes before this years draft.

I would most certainly not take JB over Hoyer. JB requires a totally different offense to be even semi-competent whereas Hoyer understands and can run the McDaniels offense. Since all people get to see of Hoyer are his limited snaps in the preseason with absolutely vanilla and non-gameplanned schemes playing for the most part with 2s and 3s he looks worse than he actually is. Obviously, we would not get particularly far with him if Brady got injured but he could hold his own and not totally ruin a season if he had to only play 2-4 games (going 2-2 or so).

It has been repeated a couple of times in the JB thread but of course he looked better with the Colts because he got one entire season of gametype snaps and practice snaps there which developed him further. He would have never sniffed 5% of those snaps if he stayed here and would still be garbage.

Felger and facts don't exactly run in the same circles.

A single Browns source claimed to a single Browns reporter that the Browns wanted to offer the Texans’ first round pick for Garoppolo but never had the chance. That pick was not projected to be very high, but ended up #4 overall after so many important players got hurt.

Rapoport pointed out that the Browns weren’t even offering a first for Garoppolo at the draft, and it doesn’t make sense that they’d offer more for 6 weeks and exclusive negotiating rights than they offered for a full offseason and season with him.
