Barnwell: Best fits for 15 NFL free agents still on market
The risk-reward ratio for Breaux is enormous. Given his injury history, it's difficult to imagine Breaux commanding more than a one-year, $2 million deal. His upside, though, is as a legitimate starting cover corner in a league in which those often cost $10 million per season in free agency.

The Patriots have a track record of taking shots on similarly talented players, and while they traded for Jason McCourty and drafted Duke Dawson this offseason, Bill Belichick has a way of finding uses for talented cornerbacks.

I'm sure the Patriots have an excellent reason for not having brought Breaux in. I'd love to know that reason.

Sure. Perhaps the reason is that belichick is fine with the camp competition we already have:
Gilmore, McCourty, Rowe, J Jones, Dawson
and competing for mythical 6th spot (and the PS): C Jones, Crossen and Lewis

It’s not Belichicks nature to pass on a good player because of how many players we have at the position. Quote the contrary in fact.

Breaux must be cooked. He has quite a rough injury that he’s recovering from.

Given that Breaux's been available since before the draft, that can't be it.

Would a "Breauxmance" would be good for the Patriots???..

He is an injury waiting to happen.. two broke fibula's and a history of neck problems so Delvin Breaux does not seem like a good fit for the Pats or any team in the NFL..

BB wanted him a few years ago so clearly there was interest. He's been banged up a lot. Maybe he brings him in during the summer after some cuts?

In fact, they *did* bring him in, way back in March:
Cornerback Delvin Breaux Visits Patriots, Might Have Wildest Injury History In NFL

This was very early in free agency - he was clearly one of the top guys on their list to look at. The fact that the Patriots chose not to sign him after that, and the fact that he hasn't signed anywhere yet, tells me he's not fully recovered yet. And may never be.

I would try everything to improve the 21st ranked pass defense.

By "bring him in", I meant signing. I should have been more clear.

All of BB's history tells us otherwise.

The poster said the we should do "anything" to improve the defense. If that's what you think Belichick does, then we strongly disagree. Clearly, there were many, many defensive players that we COULD have signed this year.

I suppose that we can say that there just was no one who was good enough to compete with Richards at S or with Roberts at LB or even as a possible DE if others don't work out.

Belichick doesn't do ANYTHING. Belichick makes choices.

This year we have a dozen wide receivers signed and are paying Allen $5M at TE. We used a top draft choice on a RB.
=======
Do you really believe that Belichick has done ANYTHING he could to improve the defense?
I don't. I think that belichick is a much better GM and coach to ignore value and other needs in order to do ANYTHING to improve the defense.
=====
BOTTOM LINE
We disagree with how we characterize how Belichick runs the team. And we both of us have followed the team for many years.

Dude, what the hell has happened to you? You've gone completely nuts this offseason.

Belichick signed a free agent pass rush guy (Claiborne)
Belichick traded for a CB (McCourty)
Belichick drafted a pair of CBs (Dawson, Crossen)

The only avenue he didn't try is kidnapping.

That is the panic approach of many teams. That is not the patriots way.

Belichick often has exhausted all resources available to fortify a weakness.

No harm paying a guy short money to see what he has. An awful lot is riding on Mcourty.

BB drafted a RB because the # 1 RB is gone and Gillislie has shown nothing and Burkhead was hurt most of last season.

Not particularly. Not when they also added Crossen and Dawson. Not to mention the additions of Clayborn, the return of Hightower, Langi, etc.
