I get where Dion is coming from, but it’s not quite as clear as he is suggesting. I’m sure there have been plenty of players who Belichick has been forced to watch leave, because of his beliefs regarding the draft, value, and makeup of the team.

I think it's pretty obvious they knew the market for him was going to be above what they wanted to pay so they didn't even want to engage in discussion.
