BGC 2018 DRAFT QB THREAD

Before it was cool to link Jackson to N.E. ...

This 10 year old is going places.

any thoughts on the Marshall QB, Chase Litton, as a 6th, 7th, or UDFA?

6'5", 232, not mobile, good arm, 3 year starter, over 60% each year, very raw since it was a simple offense.

Has some off-the-field issues- failed pot test, in high school his ex-GF accused him of stalking, and he was somehow involved in a theft.

Chase Litton, QB, Marshall

Chase Litton is who I think BB will choose in this draft. Good size, lots of experience. His off-field stuff is pure high school - forget about it.

Just a reminder of what a good college quarterback looks like. Poise, timing, ball placement, clutch factor -- this guy showed it all in this game.

I think Jackson is a blend between Cunningham, Mariota & Vick

Just reposting what my thoughts on Kyle Lauletta's ranking on Mayock's Big Board.

He's got a higher grade on Kyle Lauletta than I thought.

From the Tier 2 QBs for the Patriots, I have:

White
Falk
Rudolph/Lauletta

Lauletta's arm, sack total, TD:INT ratio, tipped passes and never being prolific or dominating in a season (4000+ yards passing) are the reasons why I have him rated lower.

That's why I never got the comparisons to Jimmy because he did this on the FCS level leading Eastern Illinois to a 12-2 record his senior year.

Kyle did have different offensive coordinators.

But Mike White did too and was still more prolific at a higher football level and led WKU to a top #25 final ranking.

Ive been reading that lauletta doesn't have a strong arm. I remember that was the knock on Brady coming out of Michigan, Brady fell to the sixth rnd because of his lack of athletisism, had questions about Arm strength. i rember watching a couple of Michigans regular season games and thinking he can't zip the ball around but somehow Brady acquired that ability after a few years.

Brady never had a weak arm.

He had a "frail" appearance body wise and everybody assumed that he was weak in overall strength/toughness which has been proven wrong over his spectacular career.

I will say that he's a very good interview. He's composed and gives clear answers. I could see teams liking him for his communication skills and personality. Strikes me as the perfect backup type, with some hopes that he can develop beyond that.

Edit: I should also say that the improvement with his footwork and throwing motion from the season to the Senior Bowl was pretty significant. I don't know if he's at the same level as Garoppolo, but I do think with a few years to learn, he could be a competent starting quarterback for the Patriots, and could reach the playoffs. Beyond that, no predictions.

Something subtle I saw, which might not mean anything, was who were the starting QBs in the Senior Bowl.

Usually the players with the most talent and/or who practiced the best the entire week are rewarded the starting jobs.

The two starting QBs were Baker Mayfield and Mike White in this year's Senior Bowl.

Mike was excellent in the game going 8/11 128 yds, 11 ypa and 1 TD.

Bill O'Brien was the head coach for Mike White's squad.

And with his experience with the Patriots, I'm leaning towards his evaluation of the QBs at the Senior Bowl would align closely with ours.

Yeah, I also agree with this strategy. Although I'm higher up on Mike White rather than Lauletta or Faulk, I wouldn't have any problem with those two if we draft them.

The reason I'm so drawn to Mike White is from the rapid development he has shown at QB.

Because baseball was his first love, he only played one year of high school varsity football. But when he did start, he went 13-0 and won a state championship. Willie Taggart quickly snapped him up at USF and played him as a frosh/soph with bad results.

WKU QB White took unlikely path to Hilltopper stardom

When he knew his style wasn't a fit, he took a personal reflection of himself and made a decision to attend WKU because of Petrino/Brom's offense, which is also the Erhardt-Perkins system, and willing to sit behind WKU's star QB, Brandon Doughty.

It was his meteoric jump in accuracy and overall QB skills that, to me, showed he was putting in much work and effort to become a better QB.

I actually think Jeff Brohm's leaving and Mike Sanford becoming the new head coach helped him because he proved he wasn't a system QB: just a good QB.

Now Sanford's WKU team wasn't anywhere near the quality of Brohm's, to the furor of fans on WKU's message board, but Mike persevered with no running game (or O-line) and was able to guide them to a bowl with surrounding cast he had.

Rushing Offense | FBS Football Statistics - NCAA.com

When he played against GSU in the Cure Bowl, I was surprised that he even made it through the whole game. WKU's O-line was so bad that it made our average D-line look like the resurrection of the Doomsday D.

Yet, he kept getting up and kept trying to attack our weak points. We had good corners in Chandon Sullivan and Jerome Smith, but our LBs were slow and awful in coverage and our safeties were abysmal. What sometimes appears he's holding the ball too long, he was trying to find those spots but many of his WRs, other than TE Yelder, weren't getting open, another common theme throughout WKU's season. He was a one-man offense and was keeping them competitive in the game until the final minutes.

Western Kentucky vs. Georgia State - Game Recap - December 16, 2017 - ESPN

Yeah, he has the natural arm tools but his footwork, pocket awareness and ball security needs to get better; it's his intangibles of leadership through adversity, making teammates better (TE Deon Yelder did not even have a single catch his Jr. year and now he's an NFL prospect) and nuances for the QB position are the reasons why he's rising up the draft boards.

White shows off arm Friday at Hilltoppers' Pro Day

great post, thanks

Maybe I missed a page or two . haven't seen Shimonek in 13 pages .
so maybe 13 is a page for him.

The first time I saw him (in an interview) he came across as as QB psycho. And that's close to #1 qualification to me (since it is what made TB so great - apart from BB of course..)

Late starter but showed incredible poise . even overconfidence at times.
Id love to see him in Pats camp (possibly as the second QB brought in)
Possibly UDFA . certainly good chance they get him at #199..;)
(and throw in Cantrell for good measure..)

1. Here some nice extended highlights . with nice 2min drill for 4Q comeback in Texas derby at the end.

2. Had a good Shrine game . started and finished the West win

3. Here a full game tape I could find

4. Coming in for injured QB and delivering..;)

Interesting Tweet-Thread here from Adam Kurkjian on the Etling choice.

The gist of it is that the selection had more to do with Etling playing under Matt Canada as his OC in his final year than it had to do with him playing previously in a "pro-style offense under Cam Cameron", in spite of what Caserio said in the press conference.

Brissett apparently also played under Canada, and apparently told Kurkjian that the difference is that Canada's system is very Patriot-like ... week-to-week, matchup-based game-planning, using a lot of motion, line-movements/shifts to confuse the defense's read and force them to show their hand.

Might be worth investigating further.
