How Focused is Gronk?

Do you have a specific time where it's appropriate for teams to release players too, or is it only the players who need to shut up and honor the contract they signed?

Sure, right around the draft when players are wishy washy on whether they will show up for camp.

The actions in the preceding months play into the decision to unload a potential problem.

Gronk was the highest paid TE when he signed the contract. If he wanted that to continue guaranteed he could have signed a shorter contract. Although they always want to they shouldn't get the security of a long term contract and the flexibility of re-doing it every year or two.

Due to his back he wanted long term security. That comes with more years. He could have done what Solder did.

Honestly, if it weren't for all the other rumors and stories floating about, this press conference wouldn't even be a blip on my radar. Remember the offseason he was bodyslamming people? I think that was following a surgery of some sort too if I'm not mistaken (please correct me if I am). That raised a much bigger eyebrow for me personally, as an incident. Now obviously there's concerns to be worried about with the culture in general, but I don't think this particular thing shows a lack of focus, at least any more than Gronk's usual offseason craziness.

Mankins had no contract.

Gronk has a contract. The time to hold out is during contract negotiations like Mankins did. Not today after you just signed a new deal that pays you through 2019.

Gronk is on the downside and should be traded.
If you feel that you’re underpaid, there is no “appropriate” time to hold out. Holdouts when one is under contract have led to new deals. As for trading him? That would be a stupid thing to do for multiple reasons. One being the type of compensation that they would get for a guy that has hinted at retirement multiple times now.

Brady is getting called a diva around here too and there are quite a few people outwardly wishing the team would either trade him or start over. And a lot of the guys that are doing it are the homers as well. This board has gone off the absolute deep end.

both have below market deals..........both have a right to complain whenever they feel like it......if you want 'all in' all the time, then you should be willing to pay for it

he's holding out? I thought it's voluntary this time of year

Not yet but I suspect he’s willing to if his primary gripe is his contract. I personally think there is also truth to Florio’s report about some leftover salt from the Super Bowl.

Phil Jackson played a limited roll as a substitute on the first championship team and did not play at all on the second (look it up). Phil's had arguably the greatest player of all time in Michael Jordan. Then in L.A. he had Shaq and Koby. How did he do when he had to start from scratch (NY)?

I was just offering information. Not taking sides.

One thing, though: in the 60's the Celtics were unstoppable! With, what, nine teams and stable rosters (near complete ownership control).

Heck, I was on the first Cadet Division National Dekhockey Champion team! (We beat the other three city teams competing to claim the "national" title.)

Comparing coaches/managers/players of different eras is a fools' game. How do you think the great Packers would do against any NFL team today? Would there be enough ambulances in the city to handle them?

He’s gone. No way Belichick is taking him back. He’ll be packaged to Cleveland as part of a trade up for a QB.

BB is going to take charge of the locker room.

After reading this I wondered if BB could possibly be turning into another an old Navy guy.

Gronk has threatened retirement because he wants more money. Everyone understands what this is all about.

Why did Gronk sign a deal that he was very happy about that paid him through 2019, if he was stepping away from the game? A Browns 2nd round pick would be awesome. Spend it on a QB which is a critical need for this team.

I just signed a deal that I was happy about otherwise I would not have taken the deal and asked to be traded.

Because somebody other TEs on losing franchises are making more than me, I dont like my deal anymore. All this Gronk mistretement is a load of ****.

What is wrong with this deal? Tight End Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap

Nothing other than Gronk isnt not Numero Uno. F him. He can GTFO.

Um, he's wearing a Monster Energy drink suit and hat. Maybe it's a sponsorship thing.

Maybe we will see him driving a Nascar soon if they can figure out how to fit him inside without cutting the roof off.

I think there's a decent chance it's not about the money........I do think there's some dislike about how the SB turned out

just by the way Amendola put it:

"I have my thoughts about it because I was out there putting my blood, sweat and tears out on the field that night, and one of our best players wasn't on the field," Amendola said, per ESPN.com. "To tell you the truth, I don't know why. I did ask, but I didn't get any answers. I can't make decisions like that, so I don't necessarily worry about it, but I know Malcolm is a great player and he could have helped us win. For whatever reason, he wasn't out there. He's going to play more football in his career, and he's going to be a great player for a long time."

Now ponder those notions while still under contract........I'd be in no rush to get back if it wasn't mandatory, and I might even make an indirect statement......if I didn't get an answer on Butler, I'd be sort of filling in the blanks myself and thinking 'I'm already injury prone, I think I'll take it easy until I have to go to work' ..... hell, when was the last time Gronk even played in a preseason game?

I also think it's funny how some people still say the same kinds of things about gronk they saif suring his first couple of years......gronk is gronk and always will be .....free thinker who you're not going to change......he's proven he's fine taking care of his readiness to play and nobody on offense puts themselves on the line the way he does and always has

Then why hasn’t he been traded yet? If teams are willing to give up prime draft picks and he’s that much of a cancer to the team because he’s not showing up to something that’s about VOLUNTARY, then why is he still here? Could it be that he’s worth more to this team and that other teams don’t know something that Triumph on PatsFans.com knows?

It’s quite simple, actually. At the time, it made him the highest paid TE in the game. He no longer is in spite of arguably being the GOAT TE.

Yeah, but he needs to GTFO. And Brady is a “diva” who can “go **** himself”, according to some on this board. That Super Bowl loss and Belichick’s highly questionable decision making in that game and throughout that season really did a number on people here.

obviously it did a number on some of the players, too

BB is still the best coach, Brady is still the best QB and Gronk is still the best TE.......might want to start with that......they're out there a month longer every year than most everyone else......it's April, who gives a sh.t......I mean besides Jets fans

I think BB made a mistake during the superbowl.....I think the intent was in his way, the right thing, but that's that........if Brady and Gronk have some venting to do, that's fine......even if they both wind up quitting in august, I'm still going to watch......

hell, even if Brady, Gronk, and BB all quit, I would still watch because.....

If a player doesn't want to get cut for free they can choose to bear the risk, take less, and negotiate a guaranteed contract. Spare us the BS about teams "not honoring" a contract when a player is cut. The contract allows a player to be cut. The contract doesn't allow a player to hold out.

Right, holding out is the only leverage they have. It's obscene to complain about a player exercising that leverage.
