Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

I love when people say 'wasn't ready to play'

WTF does that mean anyway? he wasn't ready as in not ready to be better than Richards or Bademosi? or was it actually that BB wasn't ready to put him in because of some disciplinary reason.....beyond the good soldier captains, there are plenty of players behaving as though someone other than Butler screwed them out of a better chance to win the SB

I think the front office is still the best in the game, but it appears hubris has set in and they've been full of crap for awhile
I love when people say hubris is to blame WTF does that mean anyway?

I don’t think Bill would every play anyone who wasn’t ready. That’s not his style.

That said, the biggest single reason we lost the SB was loss of sheard, long, hightower, Nink and Rivers. If we had any one of them we would have won.
How could Butler not be ready if the defensive sets were the same as the ones he’s played in since he’s been here? How are Bademosi and Glitch superior options?

My guess is he wasn’t practicing well and if SBB’s report are true that he was caught with pot and booze then it’s clear he wasn’t taking the super bowl seriously. And if you don’t take the game seriously Bill isn’t going to play you. Belichick will never reward you for poor off field judgment even if it’s the super bowl. He’s just old school. A younger coach probably would have let it go but Bill is Bill.

And Bill being Bill cost the team a Super Bowl win. The guy is going to be leaving the team afterward anyway. Sit him a series or a quarter and when it becomes clear that the defense you have to run due to your own choices is getting tea bagged, plug in the more talented player. I’m not understanding what people are having trouble with here. The goal is to win a Super Bowl. Nothing else. You put the people in that give you the best chance to do that unless they did something more serious (like assault), in which case you promote someone else and don’t even dress them. Glitch and Bademosi do not give you the best chance to do that.

Correct, he didn't reward the entire team because he sat a pretty crucial cog to the defense(98% of the seasons defensive snaps)

I don't remember him benching Lawrence Taylor even though there are plently of reports of drugs and laziness during film sessions.

He wasn’t lawrence taylor’s head coach.

And I think the players know the rules with Bill. They shouldn’t be surprised and they should be mad at Butler.

I'm sick of the LT comparison. That was Parcells team.

Do you really think BB was happy his best player was coked up? If BB looks back at LTs career do think he feels LT won as much as he could have?

Yeah it's such a ridiculous excuse.

Some people conveniently forget that Butler whiffed on that goal-line play in practice prior to the Seahawks Super Bowl. Yet he was still put on the field and played well - not to mention in that exact scenario. And that was as an undrafted rookie. A couple months ago, he was about to play in his 3rd Super Bowl in his 4th year.

That he wasn't practicing well is the one thing we do pretty much know. No need to guess about it.

We know butler wasn’t practicing well right before SB49 (according to Do Your Job) either. Bill played him though, so it has to be something more than Butler not practicing well. It was the booze and drugs during Super Bowl week that did it.

Butler received overwhelming support from his teammates afterwards, including Brady, despite knowing he was riddled with "booze and drugs" throughout the week?

You are making too many assumptions. You are assuming his teammates know he was caught with pot. And second no one ever said he was “riddled” with drugs alcohol throughout the week.

What I don’t understand is why people blame Bill more than Butler. Bill never told Butler to smoke weed during Super Bowl week or get drunk. And second we don’t know if this was a second or third offense. What if Butler was caught doing pot before and Bill gave him a warning that he’d get benched if he did it again? Bill would look foolish for playing him.

I'm making assumptions? Yikes.

Of course his teammates would know of all this.

You don't like the word "riddled" - okay. That's beside the point.

There is zero evidence as of yet that this is what Butler was doing. Even so, that’s not a transgression that warrants sitting him the entire game and tanking a Super Bowl as a result.

Let’s just say he didn’t sit him for no good reason. And butler’s poor practing and drug use is on Butler. I’m sure Bill has an internal rule about these sorts of things - that if you’re caught you don’t play. Making an exception would make Bill look weak and undermine his authority.

Other coaches like Rah Rah Pete in Seattle would overlook a player doing drugs. That’s why Pete leads a dysfunctional team up in Seattle. If Bill makes exceptions then later on he’ll be accused of “treating players differently” and the press will be all over that.
