Our first 2 picks could likely yield a top 15 pick.

Is anyone worth it?

Aside from the obvious top 5, these three could be transformational defensive talents:

Vea
James
Ward

Quenton Nelson is an obvious answer. If Josh Rosen fell to 15, I'd move up and take him in a heartbeat. Roquan Smith and Derwin James are probably the only other guys. But outside of Barkley, those are my top 5 players in the draft.

There's a few guys in the next five who might still be there at 31. I have Landry and Hurst in my top 10, and Joshua Jackson hovering around it. I might be willing to move up to grab one of those guys but probably not to 15.

I don't know that Nelson would be enough of an upgrade to Thuney in power run/pass situations to justify the downgrade in the screen game and any zone or pulling scenarios. Nelson is incredibly powerful, but he's not as mobile as Thuney. I don't see the value in spending two picks on a marginal upgrade.

I want nothing to do with Rosen. Pretty passer in a clean pocket, but I hate his pocket presence. He'll go top 5 or 10 anyway.

Now if Chubb miraculously fell into the teens, sign me up. Just don't ever see it happening.

I haven't looked at Nelson at all, so forgive my ignorance, but is he strictly a guard or could he play at tackle? Seems like he has decent size....

From 31 to 15? Not for our team’s makeup. We don’t desperately need Vita Vea or Derwin James (I admit both are studs).

From 31 to 25 is interesting. It only costs 31 + 96 & a familar friend in the Titans own that spot. Jumping 31 to 25 gives us a real shot at Landry, LVE or Evans:

:)

31 to 15 for a pick isn't in our makeup but 31 to 25 is fine?

OK, but for me, we have 3 picks in the first two rounds and will do diligence in considering trading two of them to move up.

Obviously, trading down is more likely, however, I believe that there will be opportunities at around 15 that will be difficult to pass up; and yes, around 25 also.

It seems likely that 4 of the first 12 will be quarterbacks. That leaves a lot of very good players, one or two of whom might slip.

Of course, we could trade both our 2nds to move to about 25, and have two first rounders. IMHO, the value of the 5th year is moving higher and higher as the cost of free agents goes up and up.

The players around 15 are a few DTs, a SS, and a nickel CB (Smith & Edmunds probably won’t make it to 15).

It’s moreso the players available at 15 for me. I wouldn’t trade 31 & 43 for them.

According to one mock, 4 ILB's are in the top 20. It would seem that we could have our pick (with maybe one picked before 16). Also, it seems we could have our pick of OT's.

Of course, we also could draft a Jackson (CB at 16 or QB at 31).

Are you referring to Ward as a nickel CB? Or Fitzpatrick?

Nicke CB is probably inaccurate but I do think he’s more Chris Harris than a shutdown CB1. Not sold a 5’10 190 lb. CB can cover NFL WR1s.

Ward is 5017, so he's 1/8th of an inch off 5'11. Butler is 5096, and he did just fine here as our outside corner for a few years. That's also the same size as Casey Heyward, Robert Alford, Marcus Peters, Tre'Davious White, Patrick Robinson, etc -- they all had pro bowl caliber seasons recently. Ward also has long arms, impeccable technique, and incredible leaping ability (best broad jump / vertical jump combo at the Combine this year). Multiple receivers said that he was the most difficult corner they faced, and extremely difficult to separate from. He even covered TEs at times for Ohio State despite the size difference. In fact, check out his coverage and interception against Troy Fumagalli, a 6'5 TE for Wisconsin:

Ward showed more consistency on tape than Gilmore. He's an inch shorter, but otherwise is faster and more explosive. I like Gilmore, but I think Ward would surpass him in time as a true #1. He's been well coached with the connection to Schiano, who also worked with the Rutgers quattro of McCourty x2, Harmon, and Ryan. I can't think of a better replacement and upgrade for Butler. To me that's well worth two picks.

To be fair, Butler was usually matched up only against shorter, quicker WR1s & left Jones, Hopkins, Thomas etc. to Ryan + a S.

A lot of people love Ward as a potential All-Pro but I’m just not sold yet as a high pick. I had Lattimore #4th overall & Ward probably in the teens. His game vs. Indiana had his ups & downs vs physical WRs. He is an awesome cover guy & gifted athlete no doubt.

Regardless, he’d be the perfect compliment to Gilmore & Gilmore/Ward would be a better version of Ryan/Butler so there would be no complaints from me haha.

Not a fan of giving up the first two picks to get anything other than a LT, and I’m not sure these LTs are worth that. If there was a Tyrone Smith then sure but there’s a LT of question marks about this group (yet to watch McGlinchey). If you think Kolton Miller can be the next Nate Solder, then I’d consider 31 and 63. I just think LT is too big a need to risk waiting until 63 to get one.

Fair enough.

If the team believes that either Miller or McGlinchey is the next Nate Solder, then I think that Belichick would use two picks to get one of them, even our first 2 picks. I agree that it shouldn't take more than our first and third pick.

Obviously, the issue is joined when one of them is picked. Then, the situation may be move up or lose our chance for a top LT.

The patriots are very, very used to stability at LT. Since 1987, we have had only Armstrong, Light and Solder.

People have been suggesting a trading up for Miller & co & I just don't see it.

I'd be pretty pissed if we did.

I think most are just getting caught up in the draft.

I'd much rather take Jones, O'Neill or some w/ 49 pick if the f.o. believes it's that big a need.

If Garcia is healthy I have a lot of faith in him

I want 4 picks inside the top-100. If Bill wants to shuffle around 31, 43, 63 & 95, then whatever. But I am not at all in favor of packaging picks and receiving a lesser number of picks in return.
Having only 4 picks total in last year's draft just killed our depth in the SB, and there is no damn way that I want to ever see that happen again.

No. Unless LVE is sitting there at 26 or 27, this should be a year where we see a trade down to accumulate more picks.
