Jets just traded for #3 overall

If you think about it, this forces the browns to take a QB at 1, since the jets will likely take whoever the browns would have wanted at 4. Barkely goes to the giants, which I would hate because they are going to become good again. The jets should have waited until draft day to make this move.
I was thinking that too about the Browns, but if they have these 3 QB's ranked close to each other then they may feel it's worth it to take the best player Barkley at 1, and settle for the last of the 3 QB's at 4. They had to be expecting Indy to part with that #3 pick anyway, I doubt this is catching them by surprise.

The Giants are the only possible last moving piece in the top 4 now. If they feel Eli has another 4 years in him, this trade proves how much they can get for that #2 pick and they could bite.

Every team has there own evaluations on players. Each team has different evaluations and rankings. Why are you denying a simple fact.
It’s irrelevant unless you atectellimg me the top guy on the jets board is at least 3rd on Cleveland and the giants and Cleveland and the giants told them that.

The jets will end up with who the Browns and giants didn’t want. That’s a fact. That it could still be who they wanted is a wild, weakly supported guess.

Teams MIGHT have them ranked differently teams are most likely to gave them ranked the same.

They could gave sat at 6 and probably gotten the same guy.
It's clear the Jete viewed the probabilities differently. They had to feel that if they sat at 6 then either DEN would have gone QB or CLE would have traded #4 to someone else who would have gone QB, or both.

Obviously they did. That doesn’t make it a smart move. And it doesn’t make them right.
I have no motivation for my view, they may have panicked.

They would have made this trade with Indy if they were going to do that. They had more to offer.

Colts would have had to go back further. Their GM was talking about liking the options at 6. They’ll get one of Barkley, Chubb or Nelson. They wouldn’t get those if they’d gone back as far as Buffalo.

I’m sure 12 and 22 would have made them happy.

no not really cause Buffalo's earliest pick is at 12 not 6. Jets had more to offer cause Indy only has to drop back 3 spots. That was the most attractive thing about this trade from Indy's standpoint.

Good trade for both teams imo, and probably the best they could each get. Indy stocks up while only falling to #6, and the Jets pay the typical price for a move into the top 3.

The Jets are guaranteed at worst the #3 QB on their board, quite likely their #2 QB (if Cle takes Barkley at 1), and possibly their #1 QB (if the Giants take a different QB), and only at the cost of some 2nd rounders. None of the 3 QB's were expected to last to #6 - we'll never know that but I wouldn't call this a panic move, there were good odds that all 3 would be gone.

The Giants should definitely take advantage of this situation by trying the troll the Jets into expending more resources to get their QB. Give John Elway a ride on the Mara private yacht. Set up Josh Rosen on a blind date with Kate Mara. Maybe you can extract a Trubisky like haul, or force the Jets to try to trade to #1.

Another Green Bean move for St. Patrick’s Day.

Then they are idiots.
You don’t blanket 3 QBs and call them the same and take the one the other 2 teams don’t like.
Mike Lombardi says hi.

The colts trading back tells me Andrew Luck’s shoulder might be better than originally thought. Clearly they were not targetting a QB. It’s a great trade for them if (as expected) there is a run of QBs by the time the 6th pick comes along.

Another Lombardi tweet in line with what some people are writing here:

Also this is thought provoking:

Colts with a great trade.

Now imagine tanking instead and having the first overall pick. Could of got 20 picks from the jets.

So they did ok just to move back 3 spots but they also left alot on the table

I’m sure 12 and 22 would have made them happy.

Maybe but there’s a pretty decent drop off around 10 or so. 3 QBs, Barkley, Chubb, Nelson, Fitzpatrick, Derwin, Roquan. It should also be noted that that’s one extra pick, not three top 50 picks over two years. Question is, which would you prefer if you’re in rebuild mode, 1 extra pick or three?

Funny, I see the exact opposite. If Luck was coming back strong, they'd go for one impact player this year instead of two less-certain players this year and one more next year. Trading down to me suggests they feel they have time to develop players. I'd say the Dolts are going to have another year of tanking in front of them, because they just have seen how tanking pays off big time!

Ref: Colts-Jets trade proves the value of tanking

Indy may not have wanted to drop to 12.

Plus, the Jets started on this in January.

Breer - Negotiations started at Senior Bowl
The Jets suffered a big loss this week when Kirk Cousins signed with the Vikings. But the good news? They’d been preparing to take this blow since January.

It played out this week, first with a slew of free-agent signings, then with the big bang on Saturday: an aggressive swing by GM Mike Maccagnan to send the Colts the sixth, 37th, and 49th picks in this year’s draft, plus the Jets’ 2019 second-rounder, for the third overall pick, which will be spent on the team’s next franchise quarterback.

So Saturday was a significant day in franchise history, and an era-defining one for both Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles. If they get the right quarterback, there’s a good chance they’ll be in East Rutherford for a long time. If they get the wrong one, it’s likely both guys will be fired. Here’s what’s clear: This offseason was always going to be about finding the quarterback for the Jets. Period.

With that backdrop, the team’s brass was taking no chances. Plan A, back in May and June, was to be in position to pluck from a ballyhooed group of college quarterbacks, and owner Woody Johnson made it clear, before leaving for his ambassadorship in the summer, that he was all-in on the idea.

As such, at ownership’s directive, the Jets live-scouted just about every UCLA (Josh Rosen), USC (Sam Darnold), Wyoming (Josh Allen), Oklahoma (Baker Mayfield), Louisville (Lamar Jackson) and Washington State (Luke Falk) game last fall, and put resources and bodies into doing background on each quarterback.

But as that was happening, a feisty young defense sparked a three-game winning streak early in the year, and quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates gained credibility in the building. Instead of landing at the top of the draft the Jets wound up with the sixth pick, Bates got promoted, and an ideal quarterback for his offense, Cousins, was out there to be signed. So what had been Plan A became Plan B.

Once Cousins was off the board, it was on to Plan B (which originally had been Plan A), and that wasn’t just about trading up for the third pick.

It was first about stocking the quarterback room with character, intelligence and competition, which the team feels like it accomplished by bringing back Josh McCown and adding Teddy Bridgewater, to create the right environment for the incoming rookie. Then, it was about giving that defense pieces with the money that would’ve gone to Cousins, and that happened with ex-Titans linebacker Avery Williamson and ex-Rams corner Trumaine Johnson signed.

Because the Jets were picking sixth, the step that came Saturday—the trade up—was necessary. And the Jets had planned for that going back to January. Exploratory talks on moving up into the Top 4 began at the Senior Bowl, I’m told, and so New York wasn’t starting from zero when it was spurned by Cousins earlier in the week.

Additionally, my understanding is that the team is comfortable with the top four quarterbacks in this year’s class—Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield and Allen. And with the Bills, Cardinals and Broncos looking at the idea of moving up, being aggressive became vital.

Why do it now? Because as the spring moves forward, teams will have a better idea of which quarterbacks they like—or don’t like—and bidding could push the price tag up. Since the Jets have already spent endless resources on studying the top quarterbacks, they felt like they could move forward now with conviction and use their head start to their advantage.

Will it work? It’s hard to say right now, of course. The last time three quarterbacks went at the top of the draft, two of them were Tim Couch and Akili Smith. What we do know, though, is that the really big decision here is the one that’ll be made on April 26.

Just TALKING to Josh McDaniels somehow made the Colts get SMART. ;)
