Browns trade Shelton to Patriots

This Shelton trade is fantastic for New England. We get a big run stuffer. Outside of vea, there was no one in this draft that filled the requirements we need for dt/nt.
Brown, Shelton, guy and valentine. That is a nice rotation.

And I’m not sure we really need any safeties
He picked it up this year.

"Kenny Vaccaro might get into a defensive scheme that could utilize his talents better than what the Saints have been able to do. That certainly was the case with Malcolm Jenkins,"

Hmmm...
You can't tell me that knowing there's a frustrated and under-medicated troll somewhere deep in the bowels of his mom's basement just choking with rage that he can't be all over it isn't very high on the list of what you are enjoying about this. Or am I mistakenly projecting my sense own schadenfreude?

Well, yeah, there's that, too.

Seriously, I sometimes think that BB is the human version of the shark in Jaws.

Brown, Shelton and Valentine is a grade A rotation. With Guy inside on 3rd and long and playing some end on early downs as long as we're healthy we have one of the strongest defensive fronts once again. We're only a year removed from 2016 where we had the #1 ranked defense. Great move.

I agree with that notion, but needs to be proven on the field. Certainly added value at a key position, even if only 2 downs.

Now you can Trade Cooks to Bears for a second rounder (supposedly).

There is no supposedly, that trade was a hypothetical trade made up by some stooge mediot at espn.

So absolutely zero merit to it. In fact the chances of that trade actually being discussed by the Pats and Bears are worse than Brady finding a fountain of youth.

If BB doesn't "swim away" out to sea at some point, it's probably gonna take three extremely lucky drunk guys in a rickety old boat to beat him.

Even then, he'll eat one of them first.

Love, love , love the move.

Shelton fits what we want to do more than Gregg Williams.

He’s got a high ceiling. Kid was a top 15 pick. Perfect timing. Not every team uses a big 320+ space eater, but we do.

We essentially traded down from the end of day 3 in 2019 by ~ 40 spots for a great NT and moved the pick into this year. That is pretty great value..

What great NT did they trade for, and why did they also trade for Shelton?

Browns run D last season
7th in yards allowed
2nd in average allowed per attempt
5th in rush attempts against

So they were a legit good run defense having the 5th most rush attempts against and still being top 7 in yards allowed and top 2 in average per rush. So it's not like they were ranked like that because teams threw it against them instead.

I'd imagine Shelton was a big part of that.

Big strong DT's do more then stop the run, they also push the pocket back into the opposing QB's face. Pass rush begins inside, first it requires big guys who draw double teams so speed rushers get one on one matchups with tackles. TEAM game. Shelton is a load.

Big lack in Super Bowl.

For everyone commenting how Shelton did on the Browns, consider how well Randy Moss did on the Raiders.

Football is a team game. Shelton got double teamed or faced the opponent's best interior lineman on every snap. The guy is a beast.

Most players who suck on one team also suck on the next.
Most players who are average on one team are also average on the next.
The volatility of successful team change is usually with high end players. Shelton has not been a high end player, to date.

He played 40 % of the snaps

Pats are just doing what they try to do every year: fill the major gaps in the roster before the draft, so they can go BPA when their turns come.
They do this every year, and despite that, the fans start off February with absolute certainty about the positions the Pats have to go after in the upcoming draft. By the time the draft comes around, most if not all of those positions have been addressed.

  1. People understand that free agency moves can impact draft moves
  2. Many times, positions that have been "addressed" have not been fixed.
  3. The question about Shelton is whether he's going to be more like Branch circa 2015-2016 or Branch circa 2017.
