Report: Talib, Sherman 'have their eye on Patriots'

If you gave me a choice between Sherman and Talib, I would take Sherman, he is younger and (slightly) less cray. The thing that killed the Pats was their absolute lack of a pass rush. Foles had all day to find whoever Rowe or Richards was covering. Word is that Seattle is also shopping Thomas, I would drive McCourty to the airport, if the Pats could get Thomas!

The Pats need a pass rush and better linebackers.

Denver is shopping Talib which means that he will cost something. Talib was not that great when he was in NE.

Sherman was otherwise healthy for 7 seasons prior to the Achilles. He wont cost anything. Sign him to a prove it deal like Revis and use him as situational CB gradually working his way back to speed. Is he brash and a big mouth? Yes, but maybe one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL last year needs an attitude adjustment like Sherman.

Reports are Sherman will be cut within the next 2 days. If we can line up with Sherman and Gilmore on the outside, that will rival our 2014 championship roster that featured Revis and Browner on the outside.

It all depends on what Sherman is willing to do financially to sign with a winner. We would become heavy AFC favorites with that one signing. Although we'd still need to address passrush and linebacker. Defense is a huge need for us this offseason.

We still need to draft a LB and maybe a player upfront.

Agreed, the defense needs an overhaul. But adding an elite piece like Sherman, looks like a big opportunity to upgrade without spending resources outside of money. I'd add Sherman, then add a couple pieces to the DL (1 LB, 1 passrusher). We could be rebuilt literally overnight.

We still need to draft a LB and maybe a player upfront.

It really doesn't though. It needs Hightower and another pass-rusher and LB and Derek Rivers might fill the need for one of those.

Nobody was complaining about our 2003 defense after the Carolina SB despite it being a shootout. Granted it wasn't Guiness Book of World Records awful like this last one, but it was still quite the 2nd half defensive no-show.

We didn't play our 2nd best corner for *REASONS*. We were without our best or 2nd best player on defense period. These were not small factors in the game.

Butler allowed a 90+ QB Rating against him over the course of the season. Certainly not the 2nd best player.

Neiher a Talib nor Sherman signing would affect our chances a lot. The secondary is not the weak-link but the strongest unit on defense. Unless any of the two wants to sign for a huge discount I would be careful putting even more money into a stacked group. They are already the sixth most expensive unit in the league.

I have mixed feelings about Talib. He is a legit talent and he has got to know that coming here means his on-field discipline issues will not be tolerated. However, he sure did manage to find a way to get injured for the playoffs when he was on the Pats....

Nobody would have complained about it this year either if the result was different. There was really not much difference between this years SB and last year. Except that the players in 2016 were able to win almost all clutch situations in the second half whereas this year we lost all of them. As improbable our win was last year it was similarly improbable that we could not get a stop on any of those big plays this year.

Would rather have Talib back, even though I am surprised he'd want to come back. Sherman would concern me off the Achilles.

I'm not advocating for a reunion, but not sure why you would be surprised if he wanted to come back.

During free agency in 2014, there were several reports indicating he was close to re-signing with the Patriots before the Broncos came in with a huge offer. I don't think he was actively looking to get out of New England at the time, just got a much better offer.

Butler was the 2nd best corner. Hightower was our 2nd best defensive player, imo.

Between the two....give me Talib...he's cheaper, knows the AFC, and played in our system before. Although, I don't like giving the Broncos any compensation.... but if we could trade a late pick for him...and restructure his 2018 salary of 8M by converting it into a signing bonus...we could walk away in 2019 with a 4M dead money hit.....about 2.22% of an expected 180M cap in 2019.
