Official Free Agency 2018

This probably isn't going to be a pretty offseason for the Patriots. Free agency is deep in positions like safety where they're already strong and weak in positions where they're weak, like offensive tackle.

They need a safety.

Howe thinks Lewis is gone

If the Patriots do their homework in the Draft they can snag a future RB in the Third Round. Both the Saints and Chiefs did that last year. I don't see the Pats paying Dion Lewis that kind of money with that sieve they call a D.

No. They really don't.

A whole defense, probably not, but I think we could use upgrades at every postion:

Cb- could definitely use an upgrade at corner number 2 (if you don't think Rowe is the answer) I'd like to see Rowe as our 3rd cb next year. After the first drive in the Superbowl, I thought he actually played well the rest of the game. Although, as an opposing QB, when you have Richards and Roberts to attack, you have no need to go after anyone else.

Safety- a huge upgrade needed here....Richards can't be on the field anymore, never, never, never

LB- Roberts, please read above for Richards, same goes for Roberts

DL- would love to add someone in the middle who can rush the passer consistently, same goes for our DE position. This is actually where I'd focus on with our 1st and or 2nd draft pick

They need a whole defense.

With just a quick look, it seems like they've got

CB1 (Gilmore),CB2/3 (Rowe),SlotCB? (Jones, if he bounces back)
S1 (McCourty),S2 (Harmon)
LB/SH1 (Chung)
LB1 (Hightower),LB2/3 (KVN)
DT1/2 (Brown),DT3 (Guy)
3dDT/DE1 (Flowers)

So they need

DT2 (Valentine?)
DE2 (Rivers?, Wise?)
LB2/3
CB2/3
SlotCB(?) - Depending on Jones' health
S3

How much can they fill with internal improvements? How much can they get on the cheap in FA? How much can they draft? Between those three avenues, I think they can get most of what they need.

They need a safety.

Sometimes I find myself thinking "I hope Richards ends up like Cannon and goes from us wanting to kill him to us losing our **** when he gets injured"

But uh. It's just not gonna happen.

Priority in free agency is resigning Dion Lewis.
The other Free agents are all replaceable.
I'd like to see Solder back but not at top money.
I'd roll the dice with Cannon and Flemming.

Cannon always had the talent, though, and some of us saw it. He was a guy who was held back by injury and illness. Richards just doesn't have much NFL-level talent. They need to let him go. If he moves to another team and has a faux-improvement the way Tavon has, good for him. It'll let him play for a few extra years, but he'll be some other team's problem.

I think we need another CB who can cover bigger receivers. Someone like Richard Sherman, if we can swing a deal with Seattle. He is reportedly unhappy there.

I remember when Richards first was drafted, he was somewhat touted from the coaching staff?

What did they see in him? I forget what the comments were. I want to say something about intellect.

Sherman and/or Talib could become available

Yeah, he was a "football intelligence" pick.
