I agree, they should been much more aggressive on defense.

Pederson's a hell of a playcaller.

As much as we have been lambasting our own defense, we still need to remember that the other team also played very well. Pederson called a very aggressive game which is the only way to win against us, and luckily for him, Foles played lights out for the most part.

Tough game- a couple things could easily have gone either way. Just not our night.

Baldy has started his dive into some of the Pats plays and this one stands out most:



Brady will have a pretty bad summer over whiffing this. He got too comfortable with those deep completions and stopped respecting the Eagles DL. He makes that pass to White 95% of the time out of the presnap read. But he got greedy with over 2 minutes of times and 2 timeouts and essentially ended the game right there.

At first blush, it looked like Gronk was his primary read (despite White being open pre-snap). That said, notice how White kept getting more and more open as time went on, because Brady was staring down Gronk. Then at the last moment, right before the strip, he turns and starts to throw to White.

He dumps the pass off to White right away, he might get 5 to 10 yards on the play, depending on how the blocking goes, but he should be able to go out of bounds. However, based on when he actually tried to throw, if he could have gotten it off, that's at least 10 yard and possibly 20, and White is still able to get out of bounds. And if Gronk happened to be open initially, so much the better.

Thats what I also thought but the Eagles had a player out having an eye on White the entire time. I don't think there was a "big" play to be made here. Whatever.. it is all hindsight QBing..

If Mason keeps leverage we might be talking about how Brady amazingly manipulated the Eagles defense into surrendering a 40 yd pass. Who knows..

The Eagles and head coach Doug Pederson deserve all the credit they have received for doing their homework and attacking the weaknesses in the Patriots defense. One of those weaknesses has been defending running plays when the offense is in 11-personnel, or three wide receiver sets, especially when the quarterback is in shotgun.

The Patriots typically defend these looks with five or six defensive backs on the field due to their lack of trustworthy linebackers in coverage, which leaves them lighter along the defensive front.

In fact, the Patriots allowed an average of 6.7 yards per carry on shotgun runs out of 11-personnel, and 4.9 yards per carry out of 11-personnel under center in the 18 games prior to the Super Bowl. The Eagles ran the ball out of 11-personnel on 70% of their rushing attempts and averaged 6.0 yards per carry on Sunday night, according to Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis.

Pederson knew exactly how to attack the Patriots defense and did a terrific job implementing that game plan.

The Eagles also played a very good game. I think that the more posters really look into the X's and O's of this game, the less bad they will feel about us losing the game. It's less about how much we screwed up (not much) and more about how well they executed. Kelce played like he was possessed.

The entire Butler situation is just the new shiney object people will lash on to because it is THE low hanging fruit.

I don't think that's quite exactly fair though to call it a shiny object. The unknown question is if they would have been out-executed with Butler in there too, or if Butler's presence limits that. There have been good posts of the ripple effects here, where Chung wound up covering Agholor a lot since Butler was out, which led to Richards being on the field in Chung's spot in a few cases. Obviously I understand that if Butler were in there, different reads and different plays are called. And obviously I understand that clearly, Belichick thinks Butler's ability to execute would have been just as bad.

This is a completely fair and legitimate question to ask simply because he had played 90% of the snaps all season, and the defense stunk yet he wasn't even given one snap as a, "throw it to the wall, see if it works" solution.

That said, I agree with the principle. The Eagles had a killer offense, their offensive line was the best in the game, and it showed. They took care of the two guys on our line who were worthy starters (Brown and Flowers) because they didn't really have to worry about the guys who would be well suited as rotational players, but wound up playing 80%+ of the snaps because they didn't have anyone better available (Guy and Harrison). And they took care of our linebackers on the ground because only KVN is a reasonable worthy starter; M. Flowers in an ideal world is only out there for passing downs, and Roberts is Brandon Spikes but with George Constanza's instincts (Spikes was so good against the run because he had uncanny instincts; Roberts should take whatever instinct he has against the run and do the opposite). The Pats need another stud on the D-Line and another stud at LB.

By shiny object I dont mean to say that it is somehow wrong to say that Butler would have helped. My point is that there were a lot more issues where after rewatching how well most of the Eagle third downs were designed I am not comfortable saying Butler would have been the difference for sure. And this has nothing to do with defending BBs stubborn decision not to try it out but more with respect for the game Peterson and Foles called.
