2018 NE Offseason

I would love to see Evans in a New England uniform next year.

He may never be Malik Jefferson in coverage, but in our defense he does so many other things that we desperately need.

With him, Hightower and van noy, we have solid starting linebackers.
I'd love Evans at 32 but wonder if he falls

Hightower-Evans-Van Noy-Roberts-Flowers would look nice to me...can't forget about Langi/Grigsby and the potential serviceable vets cut like Hali or Kendricks

Did you see him against Clemson? On the first drive, he had great coverage and broke up a pass against Renfrow. He can blitz, run fill, and cover at a starting level. He may not be as good in coverage as Roquan Smith, or pass rush like Hightower, but he still does everything well.
Agreed...Evans can really do it all which should attract BB

2nd best draft LB after Smith

We need to resign solder, which should use a significant amount of our free cap space.

I think we can save a little on the draft if we trade our first round pick for a second and third rounder. That would give us 5 of the first 96

Have a feeling Solder retires after the season

Regardless, Solder has had an inconsistent season and Garcia should finally debut next year

FA priorities in NE should be Lewis, Marquis Flowers, and Waddle/Fleming (I prefer Fleming) followed by the easy signs in Slater, Ebner, and RJF

Burkhead is likely to sign elsewhere for may pay and more work

Butler is one of my favorites but coming off a sub-par season, if the price is right I'd love Butler back, otherwise resign Bademosi and roll with Gilmore, Rowe, Bademosi, Jones, and Jones

I’d release; Bennett, Allen, Branch, Harris and McClellin. Saves about 20m

Keep Solder, Lewis and M. Flowers.

Would like to find a vet edge on the cheap. J. Harrison?

Don’t forget we have these guys returning.
3 starters
Cannon
Hightower
Edelman

2 good role players
Mitchell
Valentine

Top 2 picks from last year
Garcia
Rivers

Heck, maybe Cyrus Jones figured some things out.

Given my previous post, here's what I'm thinking. I know. NO QB's. Would
have liked a S too. BB will find some UDFA somewhere for that.

1. I. Oliver - CB - Colorado - Malcolm gone
2. D. Goedert - TE - S Dakota St - Need a backup. Future starter?
2. Trade Back for a 3 and a 4
3. Dontavius Russel - DT - Auburn - Made plays when I saw Auburn
3. Micah Kiser - ILB - Virginia - Better than Roberts??
4. R. Penny - RB - San Diego St - Probably lose Burkhead
4. Jalyn Holmes - DE - Ohio St - This year's D. Wise

I have Marty retiring and Allen restructuring but point taken

I wouldn't mind Harrison back, can already see his presence

Hopefully Garcia and Rivers contribute

I could absolutely see Penny in NE but not replacing Burkhead, Penny is a a powerback

That wouldn't help much, if at all. According to OTC, the salary cap allotment for #31 and #32 average out to $1.74M. They'd have to trade down to Dallas at #50 and #81 to get a lower combined cap hit.

I'm greedy. I'd rather develop another position.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I believe the Pats should bring in a QB (drafted or UDFA) every year from here on out.

UDFA sounds great to me. I'm just not sold on any of the big names in this draft, at least not after the ones going in the top 20.

Agree with you, awful QB class

No one is a full talent and everyone is a project

They pretty much NEED to bring in a new QB this year. It would basically be GM malpractice not to. Its impossible to know how long Brady has left, so Pats need to take advantage of the time left to let a new guy train under the master.

If they aren't going to spend a high pick on a QB. Then they should probably bring in a late round pick AND an UDFA and see which one makes a better impression in camp and then let them learn under the GOAT.

Marty Bennett retiring at age 31?? I think he has plenty left in the tank and nobody else is going to sign him after his antics last season.:) Marty and N.E. Patriots perfect match to finish off his career Dwayne Allen is just too useless as a pass catcher.

Marty announced he was retiring at beginning of '17 with GB

He has quite a few projects he's working on outside of football

Can only see him returning if he restructures

Trading down from #32 for a mid-2nd + mid-3rd probably saves the Pats only about $500k in total 2018 cap costs for rookies.

At this point, there are only two potential trade partners (Chargers and Lions) that have both a 2nd and a 3rd that add up close enough to the value of the #32 to avoid them having to give the Pats another pick (3-for-1 swap) or for the Pats having to give up two-for-two.

It's always possible that someone near the top of the 2nd would want to trade up a few spots which would give the Pats an additional late-4th rounder (e.g, CLE at #35). At that point, the Pats might move the SFO pick (#41 or #43, depending on the coin flip) for a later 2nd and a 3rd (something in the 50s + something in the 80s).

After the last draft, though, BB could trade half their 6 picks for 3rd-year NFL players.
