SI: "Belichick's protege" is Matt Patricia... according to Brandon Spikes

What happened to the NY Giants gig??

Being reported by the NY Post that the final three candidates are Patricia, Shurmer and McDaniels..

Would prefer Detroit as it is less in the limelight and a younger QB..... but the bright lights of NYC (NJ garbage dump) are enticing.
Yeah, I’m guessing that he’d be pretty interested in the NY job. They have some pieces on defense, have a high draft pick, decent WRs, an established (yet mediocre) QB, and a respected owner. They need a bell cow RB like nobody’s business. Maybe Saquon Barkley from Penn State? Can’t remember where they’re picking, but it’s got to be fairly high.

Patricia's defenses have always sucked for the first 4 games of the season. God help him when the Lions and the media get smoked early and the defense is in disarray. That said, I wish him luck and would love to see the Lions vs the 49ers in the NFCC next year.
Patricia's defenses have struggled for the first 4 games of the season because Belichick uses those games as an extended audition period and a shakedown time. Going 2-2 in the first 4 games has always been acceptable to Bill Belichick because the main goal of those 4 games is to figure out who they can count on -- hopefully without torpedoing the season in the process.

In other words, there are other priorities for the DC in the first 4 games, besides playing defense.

I love it that with jimmy and potentially Patricia going to other non-hateful teams, it gives me rooting interest in games other than the Pats. It’s also great that Patricia will get a few years worth of HC experience and when B.B. retires, we get a seasoned head coach

I think Patricia's going to be an excellent head coach (better odds than McDaniels).

Looking at it with a selfish Pats fan's perspective (the only way I look at anything), ideally he would take a job with a not-great situation. He would learn the ropes, and in five years or so come back to the Pats. Seems like the second time's the charm for most of these guys.

Unfortunately for me but good for him, I think the Lions is a good landing spot for him. So we'll see.

The lions are horrible beyond comprehension. They never win and their luck is horrendous in the draft. They picked Andre Ware one time and he had a career ending injury on his first snap. Insane

Tomlin, a cheerleaker...

#2

And If I too rank where he ends up it' N.Y. , Det, Ari

Probably gotta go QB at #2 then, right? Not set in stone, but it’d be tempting. I’d try to trade down and land both Barkley and a QB in the first round.

Ohio State’s DC Greg Schiano is apparently drawing a fair amount of interest in terms of NFL coordinator opportunities according to a Buckeyes article that I read today, but there are no specifics given. Gotta wonder what the odds are that he’d be considered, here? We all assume that it would be Flores, but Belichick may feel differently.

Schiano would be a pretty good get.

I mean, the more of the Rutgers band we can get back together, the better, right?

I’m down.

Nothing against Flores, but I think it’s more of an option than many may believe. Belichick’s always open to giving a coaching friend a hand up if possible, and they obviously share some similar coaching philosophies based on our Rutgers pipeline.

To take this theory one step further, OSU just brought on a new co-coordinator and gave him a 200k raise, so there must have been some chatter in the circles.

Unless they want a QB Id trade down and go OL.

I heard or read MP prefers NY because his wife's from foxborough or the area and she wouldn't have to move. If NY goes in another direction I think he takes Detroit. I was hoping the clown shirt would have turned a lot of teams off and he'd be here longer. Next up seems to work with the coaches too but the next guy won't be a rocket scientist.

Maybe a better job for Schianno would be assistant HC, defense. Have no DC for the moment and let Flores start his on the job training WITHOUT having the actual title. much like Patricia did when he was elevated. IIRC didn't we have a couple of years without an officially designated DC. I'm fuzzy on that transition.

But even if Flores is designated DC, it wouldn't hurt to have a more experienced defensive mind on that side of the ball overlooking the younger coach. That way the Pats keep an up and coming coaching prospect, and Schianno gets back to the NFL with a coach he respects for a few years. Everyone wins.

Schiano couldn't get a good performance out of Revis but Patricia did. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but that does stand out to me.

Maybe Schiano fell for the 'try to coach like BB without BB's clout and record' thing

I would hate to lose Matt.
But the opportunities are ripe for picking.
He could find a nice payday somewhere.

As much as I'd hate to see him with the Gnats, I think that's his most lucrative option, if afforded him.

But at what capacity will he be used. Will he have GM type power? Owners can get pushy.

How are his drafting skills?

BB makes it look so easy. The Kraft /BB arrangement works so well.

I'm sure he'll do well, and wish him well. I guess we'll find out.
Because he's most certainly gone.

Matt Patricia: Through the Eyes of a Patriots Player

Some interesting insights... plus this kicker:

It's one thing to have a top performing offense, when you have the GOAT QB and TE and guys like Edelman and Lewis... it's another to have a top performing defense with a front seven no one's ever heard of.

Plus...

...there's his tremendous fashion sense. I hope the Pats don't lose Matty P.

I love this guy. They have to find a way to keep him here. "The North Remembers"

I see Caserio as Beluchick,’s successor.

Tough to like this post.

Thought midweek that the announcement was imminent for Detroit, Indy and NYG, perhaps they are waiting for Monday to get the Tenn. game behind them... there are a few moving pieces here and to delay an announcement may impede decisions on DC's and OC's, unless that has already been worked out...
