Granted its a little early, but with the pats having a truly bountiful draft pick bonanza (for patriots anyway) I was wondering if you guys had any realistic hopes for any picks. Every mock draft you read is garbage at this stage but whats our most pressing needs: I would say the def front 7 could use a bit of love. Whats your thoughts

Just FYI there are active discussions and threads going on in the draft subboard that will be much more informed than you will get here.

this might sound stupid but where is the draft subboard?
I see road games/practice squad forums as well as the other sports forums but cant find any draft sub forum. Anyhelp will be greatly appreciated

A lot of the draft and offseason hinges on contracts. For example: if we re-sign Solder, then I'm less concerned about drafting an OT. Fleming and Waddle have filled in admirably as quality depth, even if no one wants them to start. Plus we have Garcia coming back (I assume), and he has exceptional movement skills and athleticism.

We seem set at guard, although depth to push Thuney and Mason would be nice. Building the trenches is never a bad idea. Ditto center, although I liked what Karras showed as a backup.

#2 TE could use an upgrade, depending on Bennett's health status next year. If he can regain his 2016 form, then Gronk, Bennett, Allen is probably the best TE corp in the entire league. In the draft, I do like Goedart and Fumagalli to some extent. but no one stands out like Kittle did last year.

WR is up in the air. I expect Cooks to improve. Dorsett has skill, and just needs to receive more looks. Edelman is a question mark until he shows he still has the quickness that makes him special. Amendola is as clutch they come, but his contract is up this year, and I'm sure he'll be brought back. If Mitchell and Hogan are healthy, there's already a logjam at the position. I wouldn't mind adding a young slot receiver (someone like Anthony Miller, DJ Moore, Cam Phillips, or Braxton Berrios might do well in that role), and on the outside, I'm always a sucker for guys with dominant traits like Auden Tate. I also like Javon Wims as a jump ball type with great contested catch skills.

I expect we'll bring back Lewis. He's the focal point of our rushing attack. I wouldn't mind seeing Burkhead back, as well. Is there room for an upgrade to Gillislee and Bolden? Probably, but I'm not sure who I'd take in this draft class. Perhaps Sony Michel.

I'm not too sold on any of the QBs . . .

On defense, I expect Harris and Harrison to retire in the front 7, unless Harrison really has a lot left in the tank and wants to return. Will Rivers come back healthy and seize a role? How about Keionta Davis? Will Hightower, Van Noy, Flowers, and Roberts be sufficient to hold down the remaining LB spots? Where does McClellin fit in to all of this? Can Lee continue his stellar play, now that he's recovered from his nagging ankle injury? Maybe we add some depth at linebacker, but the Patriots spent a significant amount of time in 4-2-5 and even 3-3-5 alignments this season. I'm not sure we are looking to add another LB. I'd love to see Rashaan Evans here, though. On the edge, I love Clelin Ferrell and Duke Ejiofor.

Valentine will come back healthy. Brown looks to have made another jump. Butler has been a great find. I expect Branch to retire, and perhaps Ricky Jean Francois will move on. I would like to see a player drafted there, but only if it's a good fit. My number one target is Vita Vea, but after the combine I'll be surprised if he falls out of the top 20. Maybe Tim Settle? He's basically a shorter version of Vea, so I may come around to him by draft day. I also like Jerry Tillery, and think he's an underrated player with big upside. Harrison Phillips has good technique and plays hard every single down.

McCourty, Chung, and Harmon are essentially co-starters, and they're all very good. We could use an understudy for Chung, however, and I'd like to see Richards upgraded. In the draft, I like Kyzir White and DeShon Elliott. Both have good size and can be deployed all over the field. Ronnie Harrison is more of a SS type, but he could play the star role, and I'd love for him to wear #37 so I can pretend Rodney is back. ;)

Corner is intriguing. Does Butler stay? Will we see an emergence from J. Jones, Rowe, and Bademosi? Will Cyrus Jones ever produce? If Butler leaves, I'd like to see Darius Phillips drafted to replace him. They are similar players with aggressive attitudes who never give up on the play. I like a ton of the corners in this draft as excellent role players in this defense, although I don't know if any of the 2nd or 3rd rounders have #1 upside. We have Gilmore already, though, so we don't need an elite player, just someone who can execute the scheme and tackle well.

By the end of the draft season, I'll probably only have around 50 prospects on my "draftable" board. We'll see how many make it here -- between drafted players and UDFAs, I expect to have around a 10% success rate. ;)

fantastic in depth answer, Sam Hubbard crops up a lot and i like the look of him. Garcia was a real let down being injured and have not heard enough to give an early judgement.

We don’t really run a traditional defence such as a 3-4 or 4-3. Which makes working out players to fit in our scheme hard at times.

There are about 2-5 players that I really like.

Evans - ILB/OLB/EDGE - Alabama
Lorenzo Carter - OLB/EDGE Georgia
Denzal Ward - CB - Ohio
Malik Jefferson - ILB- Texas
Da’Ron Payne - DT- Alabama

If we can land two of these I will be very happy.

I think Mo Hurst might be someone we look at 2a. We've got 3 big dudes; Malcolm Brown, Valentine and Guy. He used a 1 on Dom Easley in 2014 to get an upfield
DT. I think Hurst might be able to fill that role too. I'm hoping for a LB in Round 1.
Would love Evans.

I really like Luke Falk’s pocket presence, rarely looks flustered under pressure and has some Brady-esque pocket movement to him. Makes some lovely accurate passes too into coverage. Knocks are that he’s also Brady-esque in terms of athleticism, plays in the air-raid (although makes full field reads) and he doesn’t really throw howitzers. 2nd-3rd round grade for me, should be an excellent backup that, with time and a fair-wind, could be a good starter.

When talking about playing at the next level these plays are what I consistently see with Falk.
After watching him for years this isnt anything new. Can't handle pressure or feel it. No clock. Arm??

And again I'm taking the system he plays in into account. Even with the spacing his arm fails him at times. He can't stay in the pocket and make consistent NFL throws imo.

For the last few years, perhaps. Remember that as recently as 2011 the Pats had two 1s, two 2s, and two 3s.

The bottom line is this is a qb draft. There could be as many as seven taken in the first round as well as three rb’s before pick 32.

What does that mean for us? 10 of the top 31 picks are positions I doubt bb would spend a first rounder on. So a red chip taken has to fall to us by default where normally they would all be off the board by 32.

Defense, defense, defense. I believe bb gets a deal done with solder and Lewis.

I like a couple of guys a lot:

1.) Evans ilb Alabama - he is a tackling machine, already knows our defense and has decent anticipation. It all comes down to how fast he runs and will he be improve as a pass defender! Projects as a mate first rounder.

2.) the “duke” de wake forest. Big strong smart and appears to have closing speed. Projects as a mid third rounder.

3.) Alexander cb Louisville - projects as a late second round guy.

4.) vea - dt washington. A man among kindergarteners. So freaking strong! Projects mid to late first round, but a lot of people getting on his hype bus could push him up the board to top 20 range!

Looking back at our 2017 draft I shake my head when I see we missed out on Kareem Hunt #86 twice. We drafted Derek Rivers at #83 and Antonio Garcia at #85. Hunt was a top candidate for offensive rookie of the year. Rivers and Garcia didn't play meaningful snaps for the Pats in 2017.

I believe we need to reload defensively with DL and CB (assuming Butler leaves) as top priorities. We never draft well at WR, so why even bother? A new TE would be nice, Gronk isn't always 100% healthy. Another solid OL to protect Brady is never a bad thing either.

Oh and if we see the next Kareem let's draft him this time, alright?

I’d like to get an explosive young back. Love Sony Michel. Maybe, at 43?

Rivers and Garcia plug needs next season while Hunt does not. Scratching my head at comparing Hunt to two guys who haven't played a down yet? Do you think Hunt is watching this years Superbowl?

I don't see why we would of drafted Hunt anyway.. We had 4 RBs who are all capable and very good. Hunt would of been a wasted pick for this year.

You cannot compare Garcia and Rivers for this season, they were both on IR all year, so pretty pointless comparison.

Our DL isn't to bad. we are fairly young in that area, i can see maybe a late round draft pick there but it isn't as bad as what people have been saying. Corner i can see one being taken in the 2nd round for us.

Theres lots of talent in this draft, it is a very top heavy draft. i can see about 7 QBs being taken in the 1st round. So will be interesting how things fold for us.

Personally my Dream Draft is we double dip in LBs a corner and a safety. Anything else is a bonus.

Considering that Gilislee has been a bust. Burkhead has just been ok and we let a proven back in Blount go, I'd say that yes RB was a need. As far as pass catching RBs we are fine with White and Lewis, but are you being honest with yourself in saying that the Pats didn't have a need at RB and that Hunt would have been wasted here?

If Hunt rolls for 1,300 yards out of the gate for the Pats, you guys would be wearing his jersey right now and the talking heads would be talking about how the Pats have a balanced offense going into this Superbowl. But as usual Brady will be carrying our team with his arm and our runningbacks probably don't crack 100 on the ground, but that's ok as long as we win right? Still not a strength for us though.

We had a top ten RB in Lewis and a great backfield. I wouldn't trade Rivers or Garcia for Hunt.

Reids system is perfect for almost any RB as history has shown. Its about system, opportunity, timing etc. Joe Mixon would have been OROY if he were on KC.
