Patriots dominance this decade is otherworldly

What have I done? This thread has turned into a disaster.

There are valid technical arguments for saying "this decade" begins in either 2010 or 2011. We all know the OP is referring to the ten year chunk of time (still in progress) that began in one of those years rather than the previous ten years from today. I think it's more reasonable to begin the decade in 2010 just based on the common way that sports decades are categorized.

If you look at the All-NFL teams, they start in the 0 year rather than the 1 year. So, the 2000s All-NFL team was from 2000-2009.

National Football League 2000s All-Decade Team - Wikipedia

The NBA does the same thing, as they break it down by "team of the 90s", "team of the 2000s", and "team of the 2010s."

NBA All-Decade Teams Part Four: The 80's

MLB has the same convention:

MLB: All Decade Teams

This is just the way that our culture typically organizes a decade, a ten year span beginning with the 0 year, hence we have books, articles, and shows that reference "the 60s" or the "the roaring 20s."

Red Auerbach and Bill Russell might disagree.

Let them disagree. Then remind them there was no salary cap put in place for parody and the players below could not go to another team for more money.

Bill Russell

Tom Heinsohn

John Havlicek

Frank Ramsey

Satch Sanders

Sam Jones

K.C. Jones

Bob Cousy

Bill Sharman

My response was to the statement that the Pats are the "greatest organization in the history of north American sports." The rules were the same for everyone at that time.

The team that they beat in Russell's last season was the Lakers with Elgin Baylor, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain (somehow he managed to move around to a few teams).

The reason that those names on your list are there is because they played with Bill Russell and for Red Auerbach. Just as is the case for players like Julian Edelman playing with Tom Brady and for Bill Belichick now.

I still disagree.

. Yes the rules were the same but the rules favored maintaining a dynasty once the franchise player is in place. With the NBA the owners had complete control of player movement. This isn't about Bill Russell and Tom Brady. They are obviously both great and what the rules were/are both organizations would certainly find a way to keep them. What makes the Patriots the greatest organization in NA sports history is the fact that they maintained dominance in a league that forces parody (schedule, cap, free agency, draft system). With all the obstacles in place (including a BS camera location gate and air gate), the Patriots were still able to win 5 championships (and counting) while losing key players each and every year.

The team that they beat in Russell's last season was the Lakers with Elgin Baylor, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain (somehow he managed to move around to a few teams).
. Ok. The Celtics beat a more talented team (on paper) that year. Pats also beat more talented teams in 2001 and 2014. Not sure what your point is with Wilt moving around. His movement was controlled by Golden State and Philly management/ownership. Both teams had the option to keep him as long as they wanted.

The reason that those names on your list are there is because they played with Bill Russell and for Red Auerbach. Just as is the case for players like Julian Edelman playing with Tom Brady and for Bill Belichick now.
. As I said above. The Patriots have been able to knock on the championship door for 17 straight years after losing key talent in their prime every year. Imagine if Tom Brady and Bill Belichick could have kept the following through their prime: Adam Venatieri, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, Richard Seymoure, Damian Woody, Deion Branch, Dan Koppen, Ben Watson, Logan Mankins, Assante Samuel, Wes Welker, Patrick Chung, Chandler Jones, Jamie Collins stayed with the team through their prime years?

A decade is based on the decimal system... Hello, decade, decimal, it's in the damned name. Decade - Wikipedia

I think you are getting confused with the convention of the start of the calendar itself and how decades themselves are represented. Sure, the calendar starts at year 1, so decade 200, with respect to the start of the Gregorian calendar, starts at 2001, a decade itself, is regarded as 0-9, ie, the decade of the 90s is 1990-1999, not 1991-2000. 1991-2000 would be the 191 decade of the Gregorian calendar, but not the decade of the 90s. This is generally only used for centuries though. The common practice is to start a new century in year 201, 2001, etc, but a decade is defined as starting at 200, 2000, etc.

2000s (decade) - Wikipedia

Just read the damned wiki pages...

I agree with you and Doc Brown

Obviously, some people here don't like me...

"Hi, I'm James Busch Orthwein, and my single sole purpose on this planet relating to New England is to move the NFL franchise to my hometown of St. Louis. From the very second I reluctantly accepted the league's assignment of me to pay off their debts and run the team temporarily, to the very second Bob (snicker) Kraft overpaid me by $50 million to take it off my hands. I even had logos and helmets made up for my Stallions. I liked making up new looks. It's fun! So much fun that I did a makeover for the Patriots. I mean, it didn't matter because I was moving the team anyway, and concern about the fans didn't matter because everybody knows the Patriots SUCK! The league even made up a new logo just like the one their fans booed out of the stadium...I figured, ugly 'em up and it'll make it easier to say goodbye to them. Plus, those fans are stupid. They'll go along with anything! So, from the grave, screw them, and all these continued scandals prove me right."

I didn't mean to imply that you were doing anything else. It's just that OTG's comment reminded me of that other situation
Threads are like a box of chocolates.....

This thread has become otherworldly.
Most Championships Won Outside Of Planet Earth:

Ahhhh, whatever...

But when I think of greatest dynasties, looking at the 20th century:

1. Boston Celtics (sorry, otherworldly-although Bill Russell is a really down to earth guy)

2. New York Yankees (and they still manage to suck)

3. Montreal Canadiens (also unlikable and unrootable)

4. Green Bay Packers (like 'em or not)

This century is no contest. The New England Patriots are on top.

In football history? The closest recent run was by the San Francisco 49ers.

Two or more titles - and we have a shot at one next month, if we can win two more home games - will go a long way to separation, mathematically and overall, from anyone ever in the sport.

No one's ever won three straight Super Bowls, for a very good reason: it's hard.

Last time we had a shot, I remember BSPN morons insisting Pats had "zero chance - no chance" to win their divisional game at Denver in '06...absolutely unprecedented in media history, for a defending nevermind a two-time defending champion to be dismissed like that. I wonder if Belichick got that up on the bulletin board...I was bothered by Rodney Harrison rehabbing in Atlanta instead of being right there on the sidelines...and the blown Bailey call that was in fact a touchback...

The salary cap thing is way overblown - unless Tagliabue/Goodell would like to vacate the Donkeys' two fake wins with Elway...No? Fine.

Everybody has the same rules and restrictions and has the same obstacles in any given season. What separates the Patriots is that they have avoided the distractions and mistakes that wreck dynasties. Winning two or three or more Super Bowls in the next six seasons would be a fitting reward for the sacrifice and hard work which they have put in all these years.
