James Harrison released

Local reports are that the move may have been made with an eye on resigning him. They released him on a Saturday, knowing that no one would be able to use him for their next game, so that seems to be a big part of the speculation.

Of course, one can wonder why they wouldn’t just release a PS player, unless it’s with an eye on finances.

They activated Gilbert so needed to release someone from the 53.

I would rather Granpa James Harrising rushing or blitzing the passer over can't Tackle can't Rap up Jordan Richards.

Right, but I think I still have the same question in regards to the possibility of just releasing a PS (Edit: meant end of roster) player. We’ll have to see how this plays out. I’m leery of believing the Steelers would just cut him right before Xmas.

PS players not on 53. Doesn't create roster spot for Gilbert.

Oh, jeez. Rookie mistake. My bad, buddy.

Apply the same logic to an end of roster player, although they may have seen him as such.

Harrison can set the edge, which has been an Achilles heel all year, and get to the passer. He cannot help defend passes. I would sign him Monday and release Grissom (inactive vs. Steelers) and his 1 tackle.

Geno Grusome's pictures of BB can't be that damaging time to cut the cord.

Rookie? Heh heh. Late night maybe.
I’m trying to do too much at the same time, but none of it seems to be worth putting the phone down.

Also, I’m going to blame a moronic Steeler fan’s tweet for putting the idea in my head to begin with. I read it there and it just didn’t register all the way through. How embarrassing. Oh, well.

FWIW, his salary is $1.2M for the year, and he wouldn't be on the Week 16 roster, so, if the Pats were to claim him on waivers, it would cost them a bit more than $70K, versus the $53K vet minimum.

The NFL pays playoff checks,so thatwould be all it would cost for this season (he had a two-year deal with no 2018 guaranteed $).

Could be worth a shot. If he can be a solid edge contributor, this can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Yea it would be. No question.

He might be better than Eric Lee vs the run but I'm not sure you can cut him or Reilly in favor of JH.

Can we not cut Jordan Richards. Please please cut Jordan Richards.

One of the dirtiest players in the league while he was playing. Not a team player. And not man enough to take his losses, whined like a delusional little girl about "Spygate". He's a straight up punk. And he's about 60 years old. Don't want or need that dinosaur on this roster. Not mentally tough enough to be a Patriot.

All fair points that should be considered.

The other side of the coin is that he could potentially be a bit of depth improvement on some of the misfits who can’t set the edge and may not be as good of a pass rusher.

Agreed, although they made it well known prior to the season that he would no longer be starting. I suppose they should’ve given him more relief reps, but here are the 4 LBs playing in front of him:

Shazier (first rd pick)
Dupree (first rd pick)
Watt (first rd pick)
Williams (picked off Brady last week)

Interesting tidbit- Williams says he has that ball he picked off Brady on display at home.
