Yeah, that whole thing was ****ed up, I'd honestly be kinda surprised if it's not career-ending. You could make a pretty solid case that it's his 'fault' for having poor technique, but it feels weird to focus on that right now. It did remind me of the Reggie Brown hit in '97. Crazy that that was 20 years ago, one of the few plays from that time period that I still remember like it was yesterday.
Consider this stroll down memory lane as a diversion from tonight's game. Like a commercial break, if you will.
I remember a little bit of the Reggie Brown injury. From what I recall reading, if the medical response was slower or if they didn't correctly diagnose his injury, there was a real chance he could have died on the field. Fortunately, he survived and avoided being paralyzed.
The part of the story that sticks with me, though, is what happened with Texas A&M. Brown was in his first or second year in the NFL, so a decent amount of the players and coaches had played with Brown. They wanted to wear a patch or decal as a tribute to Brown in their bowl game, showing support for former teammate dealing with a serious injury. The NCAA said no because those patches were, according to their rules, supposed to be used for people who had passed away. Since Brown was still alive, they couldn't wear a patch for him. Out of touch bureaucracy at it's finest. As a compromise, the Texas A&M players wore a decal for Brown on their shoulder pads.
