Not a rule anyone likes, but it was to the letter of the rule. Let’s face it, if it happened to the Pats, nobody would give a ****.
People would rejoice.

To the Bucs and the Jets. Let's not do a victory lap about it.
Well they were 2 victories, both on the road against a team in the playoff hunt and a division opponent with s winning record, so a victory lap or 2 IS appropriate.

I'm not sure they are the worst defense in the NFL (haven't watched enough other games) but they are far down the list.
Umm you said they were the worst ever. The worst in the league doesn't allow 14 and 17 back to back much less the worst EVER.

The defense is not good right now and it hasn't truly shown signs of substantial improvement. I saw the same problems today that we've seen all season.

Of course it has shown signs of improvement. The run defense was excellent today. Gilmore shut down Evans last week.
They are allowing half the points the last 2 games they allowed the first 4.
Even without 2 starting corners they allowed only 17 points.

If we keep playing poor defense we are going to get our doors blown off at some point by a good offense.
You think that.

After today I'm more worried about our defense than I was a few weeks ago when I was able to say "it's early, they'll get it together".
Right because it's very worrisome when they improve and play better in the field.

I'll happily take an average defense at this point.
I'll be sure to remember that when what you would take means anything.

These jet fans are the worst. I unfortunately have some of them on facebook, and not only are they complaining about the call but they have the audacity to claim that Kraft has them paid off and they never get any calls. I guess they have not been watching this year. We must be the most penalised team this year or close to it. I don't know why I bother with them. Time to clean out my friend list...
One of my closest buds is a Jets fan. LI born and raised .

My phone exploded when they made the call. He had no idea what had happened.

The TV broadcast was terrible.

Let’s not forget, today’s defense against the Jets were playing without their 2nd and 3rd best CBs. So very good effort. Our #2 and #3 corners were a special team player and our #4 corner.

gilmore blows. he looks like a chicken with his head cut off running around out there clueless. he is either lost or taking stupid penalties. and his contract sucks for the team going forward.
Thought he played really good against the Bucs. He’s coming around.

Honestly they got lucky. This defense is completely awful. How can anyone be confident with them? The Falcons are scoring 40 next week.

You mean the one that allowed just 31 points in its last 2 games?

What I think matters most is how their play on defense might project going forward against playoff caliber teams. There's some extremely concerning, unsustainable tendencies that they've gotten away with these last 2 games (& prior), and they haven't seemed to go away like most of us expected. Especially against a lowly Jets offense. It's not a stretch to assume that superior, more competent offenses/teams will turn those yards into points if major improvements aren't made.

For what it's worth, the 2012 Saints defense once gave up 31 points within 2 games.

And we've played poorly for the most part when Gilmore and Rowe have been on the field as well. The obvious exception being Gilmore against Evans which we should expect on a much more consistent basis.

6 straight games giving up over 300 passing yards. Ugh

Well, I won't be too harsh on them. Pats were against a stellar QB group in the first 6 games:

1. Alex Smith - 368 yards, 148.6 rating. 2016 record - 233 yards per game, 91.2 rating
2. Drew Brees - 356 yards, 99.9 rating. 2016 record - 326 yards per game, 101.7 rating
3. Deshaun Watson - 301 yards, 90.6 rating. 2016 record - rookie.
4. Cam Newton - 316 yards, 130.8 rating. 2016 record - 234 yards per game, 75.8 rating.
5. Jameis Watson - 336 yards, 86.7 rating. 2016 record - 255 yards per game, 86.1 rating
6. Josh McCown - 354 yards, 84.9 rating. 2016 record - 220 yards per game, 72.3 rating.

Besides Brees, all these 4 other veterans average about 220-250 yards per game and the averaged closer to 100 more yards versus us. And the 6th guy is a rookie. Something is damn wrong.

The average passer rating against us at the moment is 109.2. Only Browns at 112 is worse. That's ridiculous.

And the yards per pass attempt, which is an even better statistic to judge against, places us dead last by some margin.

This is bad.

Why? We didn't play those teams today and a long time will go by before we do.
There were 2 things that could happen today. Win or lose. Style points don't matter. The d contributed to a win today.
What a fan "projects" has really never been meaningful.

I disagree. We aren't blowing coverages. The run d has been very good the last 2 weeks. WRs aren't catching a ton of passes, the pass rush has shown some signs of life. The defense has stiffened inside its own end limiting points.
I'm not sure what you see as not going away.

Bit that has never been the case.

No they did not. But nice to see that instead of accepting that your statement was inane you decided to go lie to defend it.

Disagree. The call on the field was a TD. There has to be conclusive evidence that the result of the play was not a TD to overturn the call on the field of TD. There was not (IMHO) conclusive evidence to that effect.

Yes, he conclusively fumbled before crossing the plane. But I do not see conclusive evidence that he did not recover the ball in the EZ. So the TD should have stood.

But I'll take it as partial payback for being screwed on the blown fumble-thru-the-EZ call in 2005.

it's like a flow chart.....once the replay clearly showed a fumble, possession needed to be re-established, and it clearly wasn't

We have won Super Bowls after beating bad Jets teams by a point or 2. We won. We are getting more of a pass rush - notice 2 sacks on the last drive. To me, that is the best thing out of the game.

Well yeah but the Jets games were always outliers. We would be kicking most everyone else's asses. I had a feeling we'd struggle in this game because we usually do against the Jets but this year it's like this with everyone we play.

I don't want to hear anything about this D giving up only "17 points"

That touchdown to touchback call was lucky as hell for us

We could have have easily given up 24 points plus all those yards and big plays to the least talented offense in the NFL

Come on. This is really oversimplifying things.

What a fan "projects" has really never been meaningful.
The fan forum exists for fans to speculate or comment on what they see. It's not wild to assume that a playoff caliber team (miles ahead of the Jets' lowly offense) would rack up some more points on a defense that performs at the level they did today. I hope that's not the case and improvements are made (& gets healthier), but I'm not going to convince myself everything is on the up & up for the D.

The run D looked great today. Looked good at times vs Tampa.

If they're not blowing coverages then I'd really like to know what on Earth happened on numerous plays, including some 3rd & long and 4th & long scenarios with WRs very wide open, and a McCowan pass to another wide open WR that looked like he was catching a punt. Other plays may not have been blown coverages, but simply a matter of NYJ's weak players beating some of our own weak players (Richards, Roberts). Whether those 2 should even be getting meaningful snaps could be another conversation.

No they did not. But nice to see that instead of accepting that your statement was inane you decided to go lie to defend it.

They shut out the Bucs, then allowed 31 in the following game. That's 31 points in 2 games.

Well IF they play the same then you're probably right. We could be getting people back and we could improve. We can't define this team just yet

Yea held them to under 20 without our 2 corners (Gilmore/Rowe)
