We seem to have no backup for Andrews. I suppose Mason can move over, with Croston coming in at OG.

The one that can return punts and play ST.

If Dorsett can't be our backup punter returner, he shouldn't be on the team. Amendola is our punt returner. I expect that Lewis will also be given a shot at some point this season.

Saw a tweet yesterday to watch the Patriots and ex Brown John Greco. He's more of a Guard but started at Center when there were injuries. I'd watch for him.

For right now I would think Thuney moves to C, and Croston comes in to play G in case of injury.

Wonder if this is temporary until the Pats are confident that Solder is back to 100%. Then at that point Waddle is let go, to make room for a C/G.

Tomorrow's waiver claims will be interesting.

ok let me post this also here since its more OT (pun intended)

A. If they kept Karras over Waddle they would have
1 backup C (Karras)
2 backup G (Karras, Croston)
2 backup T (Fleming, Croston)

B. Now they have
0 backup C
1 backup G (Croston)
3 backup T (Fleming, Waddle, Croston)

Of course Thuney is a C option . but he's no backup, he has to be removed from his top position he glued in and be placed to a weaker position he was not practicing/playing for 2 years.

With option A you're just replacing pieces. With option B you have to move original pieces around. We know how that went in 2015..

I don't know what end OL picture they have in mind but at the moment i dont like it.

If they wanted another C/G rather than Karras, why not wait until they found their replacement and then let Karras go at that point?

Are they going to proceed with nine OL with the addition of a C/G, retaining Waddle and reducing the roster depth at a different position?

I know, I know, IBBWT, but this roster decision is baffling to me.

I was pretty surprised the cut Karras frankly.

Keep in mind this is the week 1 OLine, maybe not even definitive for this week.

There will be some tweaks as players become available. Maybe they have an eye on someone a little better and are trying to sneak Karras in the PS now instead of one after week one when it will be more difficult to make past waivers.

Sounds to me like they are bringing someone in from the outside, have an agreement in place but just use his spot for a few days for more flexibility while shuffling. I dont think there is any point in trying to make sense of the 53 yet. Once they can make the players who will go onto IR-return inactive I think we will see a chain of additional moves.

I think Croston beat out karras and is viewed as only an IOL.

Apparently, shifting Mason or Thuney is a better option at C than Karras.

I agree with andy. Croston was judged to be better as a backup IOL (well, guard) than Karras.

We may or may not add a backup center. I would prefer that we do.

And yes, we might carry 9 OL's. I think about half the posters prefer that.

With regard to which position to sacrifice to carry 9 OL's, I don't think that this matters much. We don't need 53 players. Some are developmental. If we add a veteran C/OG, he may be the Game Day backup, with Croston inactive unless there is an injury.

BUT SINCE YOU'RE ASKING,
I believe that McClellan may be going on IR with no LB replacement, giving us 14 front seven players, the number that we have expected for months. We're one over at this point.

IMHO, Solder is almost never 100%. I think that we always should have 4 OT's, especially with Fleming being used as a 6th OL. Waddle instead of Garcia seems right, and IMHO does NOT hurt the team.

Croston is listed as a backup center on Pats Pulpit final 53 today.

Nick Mangold would be perfect---as a starter. But Andrews seems so established now as our center that Mangold would present problems... unless Mangold has lost enough to accept a backup role.

The open question is whether Mangold is good and healthy enough to be a backup. Obviously, price is an issue.
