Pats trade Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for Phillip Dorsett

There's no reason Hogan can't play inside, but there's a damn good reason he won't. He has the best chemistry with TB on the outside going deep since Moss. They're going to mess with that for Phillip Dorsett? I'd be shocked.
Hogan lines up inside often.

The question is the length of the route.

If he's running 5 yd slants 90% of the time I'm gonna kick JMDs ass

And we picked Brown over Landon Collins, who has developed into a top 5 safety in the league, and was pretty much a sure lock pick coming out of Bama. just imagine our secondary with him in it.

He was so much of a sure lock pick that there were rumors of the Giants cutting him after his first season because he was completely useless.

So we have 2 Brandin Cooks', Phillip Dorsett & a Gronk?!?!??!!??? SB 52 HERE WE COME!!!! :D

They have a tough schedule and need a DE or two so let's not get too crazy.

That said, they should make the AFCCG at least.

Except the pats take best player available not for need.

Bill has said it a million times

Strictly speaking it's not about BPA or need.

If you've looked at BB, there's a pattern: maximum utility over the life of the contract. He's willing to trade a bit of ceiling to raise the floor. He's also willing to draft a player early in anticipation of a big need (e.g., Solder).

Thanks dude, but the point of the post was that the writer listed Brandin Cooks twice...pure sarcasm.

I wonder if this move has something to do with Mitchell as well. Losing Jules and Mitchell being hobbled.

On paper this looks great.

My only concern is a lingering one regarding WRs coming into this system and being able to pick up the route tree on the fly.

Who was the last one to do it quickly?

This might be more geared to PR now with hopes of depth for WR come December.

Jabar Gaffney. Same kind of history too. Drafted 33rd overall in 2002 by the Texans as a smaller fly-pattern receiver, picked up by the Pats in October 2006. Contributing as a WR by December.

This trade is not a "slam-dunk" like the Cooks trade because (1) Dorsett has not had much success in this league and (2) the Pats don't hold joint practices with the Colts and haven't seen this guy up close in camp at all.

This is a "returner with upside" play. Don't expect more than Brandon Tate and you shouldn't be disappointed. The draft capital expended is about the same too so I'm pretty happy.

Exactly my point. Drafting out of need is how you get stuck with players who don't live up to their draft status. BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, plain and simple. Its what everyone preaches bill does, and look what happened when he forgot that approach.

BB has never drafted BPA. It's pretty much a myth that ANYBODY does. The only time you draft BPA is when you have a dearth of talent across the board...and have already signed a QB.

You honestly think brissett for Hilton is a fair trade?

Yes! We're the Patriots! We're supposed to be fleecing the other teams! Not the other way around! Come on! I'm so mad at BB but I'll forgive him if Dorsett becomes a kickass receiver on top of of being an elite punt returner.

:D fair enough, the routes are more important than where each guy is lined up initially. My guess/hope would be that, if Dorsett earns a meaningful role in the offense, it would be him working the underneath stuff. Based on my limited knowledge, I think he has the greater short area quickness to be successful there while Hogan really is built as a more vertical player.

He was so much of a sure lock pick that there were rumors of the Giants cutting him after his first season because he was completely useless.

Anyone who remotely believes "rumors" of a high pick DB getting cut after one season is an Idiot, plain and simple.

Look at him now, First team All pro, and PFF's 3rd highest graded overall safety.

Fyi, NY tried to use him more of a FS in his rookie year, and he struggled. Like i told a poster above, he is not a FS, but he can play in that role when needed.

Do you really think that WRs do the same thing on every play?
Hogan can play a lot in the slot and also run deep routes outside. On average he may get a deep ball once a game, maybe less. Edelman probably got almost as many deep balls as hogan last year.
You can also get open deep from the slot.

They have a hole at ST returner, and have picked up a guy that, if he uses that guaranteed active roster spot to work his way into the WR mix, has incredible upside in this offense.

This is absolutely a future-proofing move because of Edelman, Amendola, and Mitchell. Otherwise there is plenty of flotsam out there to pick from if all you want is "an returner."

Clots are REALLY trying to sell this trade up.

They shouldn't have to. Brissett has demonstrated more than 3rd-round QB ability at this point, and Dorsett has given 3rd-round WR production. Everything else is system fit and projection.

welcome to the Cabrera-Guerrero labs, boy.. to the wonderful wor(l)d of pliable..
