Pats trade Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for Phillip Dorsett

...on the punt return excitement:
last season the primary punt returners were Quan Bray and Chester Rogers.
Dorsett did not return punts.

Wait. What?

Pats picked Brown in that spot because it was an absolute need, Wilfork was gone. Safety wasn't a need as McCourty and Chung was a Safety combo and Harmon had emerged as a solid #3 and now that trio has won 2 SBs.

Terrible take.

Exactly my point. Drafting out of need is how you get stuck with players who don't live up to their draft status. BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, plain and simple. Its what everyone preaches bill does, and look what happened when he forgot that approach. With the way we made trades (hicks), and signed FA's (branch) is easy to argue that picking brown over collins was a huge mistake.

Did any of you draft junkies have Dorsett ranked highly or was Grigson just being terrible?

From his NFL scouting profile:

BOTTOM LINE
Dorsett is an ascending prospect who has averaged more than 25 yards per catch since 2012. He can challenge teams vertically inside or outside and he has home-run potential after the catch as a slot receiver. With smaller wide receivers like T.Y. Hilton and Antonio Brown proving that small and fast can win in the NFL, Dorsett should be coveted by more than one team and has the potential to turn into a star in the NFL.

Phillip Dorsett caught 33 passes for 528 yards and 2 TD last year. He also returned two punts. (Daniels)

Clever...sorts the punt return and he may be good now he isn't a Colt.
Almost exactly what Chris Hogan did his last year in Buffalo. Dorsett caught 3 fewer balls in one less game, but averaged almost 4 yards more per catch.

Except the pats take best player available not for need.

Bill has said it a million times

Kind of same situation depth-chart-wise too, right? Sort of buried behind a couple other guys? There's obviously a difference between a UDFA and a first-rounder, but still.

True. And based on Luck's development at the QB position, I don't see much hope for Brissett going forward in Indy.
Eh. If Luck plays this year, he could be in a wheel chair by Christmas.

I was going to comment on it as well. Brown is very solid. Collins came out of college a FS and we already had an elite Safety in Dmac. Why draft him?

We had the best D in the league last year.

He DID NOT come out as a FS. He came out in the mold of a Harrison Smith if anything (ss with FS hybrid ability), and he has by all means lived up to that. I wish the colts had drafted Brown, cause we most likely would have taken Collins. He was my binky that year (especially as he started to fall) and for good reason.

Why Hogan in the Edelman role?

The number one reason for Edelman's success in this offense is his mind meld with Brady. They know what each other is thinking. Aside from Amendola, Hogan appears likely to be the one most likely to be Brady's mind buddy.

And he has the athleticism to do it.

I think he can be a player here. I brung him up numerous time. Can play the slot or the outside.

Since I busted your balls earlier, I feel obliged to offer a tip of the cap at you calling the specific trade target.

Forgive me if I also point out that they didn't surrender a skill player in the process.

At times he will. No reason he can't.
There's no reason Hogan can't play inside, but there's a damn good reason he won't. He has the best chemistry with TB on the outside going deep since Moss. They're going to mess with that for Phillip Dorsett? I'd be shocked.

The other part (and admittedly petty) that I like about this trade is that it is a huuuuge trolling of Ryan Grigson.

Grigson went way out of norms with that 2015 1st rounder - - everyone was screaming for the team to get more protection on the OL for Luck. Grigson very publicly stated that he was so convinced this kid would be a star for Indy that he had to forego the Luck OL protection just for the honor of taking Dorsett.

BB driving by Grigson's house now laughing and saying 'How you like your career ending gamble now that I got him for my 3rd stringer QB?'
