Pats trade Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for Phillip Dorsett

The fact of the matter is, Brissett never was going to go anywhere with this team and probably won't be stating caliber anywhere else.
I didn't really expect Brissett to be "the QB of the future" but I thought he could certainly be a capable backup for a couple years if/when Jimmy left in free agency.

This truly came out of left field. But Belichick truly is a master at reclamations and trades. A 3rd round 3rd string QB for a WR with 4.33 speed (40 inch vertical !) and return ability, who was a 1st round pick. And is controllable contract wise for 2 more years. Even if he doesn't work out as a WR, he saves Amendola from having to be a punt returner.

I think Colt's fans have to be pissed. Read one article on SB Nation, about Dorsett being the Colts breakout player this year.

Dorsett and James White played together in high school

So a couple of days ago this board was discussing whether Jacoby would be cut, who would take Edelman's spot, and who on earth would handle return duties. Then the Pats trade JB for a lightning-fast return guy and 5th WR, and it's an unpopular trade? Man, we're hard to please! :p

I liked Brissett, but IMO he wasn't remotely on track to become a starter here. In other news, start clearing cap space for Jimmy's 2018 franchise tag...with Brady, not instead of him.

Same size as cooks. Still young. Didn't we see the same thing that happened with welker. In Miami he wasn't all that great until he got to New England.

The young part especially. He's 24...Cooks is young too.

True. And based on Luck's development at the QB position, I don't see much hope for Brissett going forward in Indy.

I love JB, but i dont think he's cut for this league. Now that he is gone, I can safely say this lol.

Getting Dorsett doesnt thrill me, but i think he has more value to the team than the 3rd String QB.

Also, I am now 75% confident JG will stay after this year

so we have the ususal shocker . and then some
might not be the only one..

more importantly . Pats have their punt returner

What makes you say that? Only stats, but I see little production in college or pros that was average or above. He is really fast.

Welker had 60+ catches his last season in Miami, Dorsett had 33 last year. Welker was well on his way. Not so sure about Dorsett, needle is aiming at bust, not bad if he was a 3rd or 4th round pick, but a bust so far as a 1st round pick.

BUT, not too late to turn it around. Kid had ridiculous measurables and was pretty good in college. Could be interesting to see him and Cooks on the field at the same time.

Wonder when Brissett gets to start.

PR possible KR and slot guy. Tempting speed that had not translated well so far.

Wait, what the f***? Beyond the trade itself, this means the team has no third QB and their second string QB is a free agent next year. If Jimmy is gone then who the hell backs up TB12? Makes me think that they are either planning on extending him somehow.

Jimmy is not going anywhere. The Pats could go with only TB12 and JG on the roster. Jacoby never would have made it to the practice squad so they get something for him. He doesn't get rid of the ball fast enough for the Pats offense. The Colts run more of an old school offense (deeper routes) so he could do alright there.

Guess they like that Tom Brady guy. There are mismanaged QBs available and draft picks.
